Ben Ainslie could draw level with Emirates New Zealand tonight in the hunt for the America’s Cup.
The Lymington-based sailor, who races with Oracle Team USA, has pulled back the prestigious trophy score to 8-6 following an astonishing four consecutive victories in San Francisco Bay.
The 162-year-old event, which has never been won by a British sailor, saw the Kiwis blitz to an 8-1 lead – just one win away from clinching overall victory.
But with their back against the wall Ainslie’s team fought back to bring the scores to 8-8 ahead of tonight’s showdown.
The points tally, however, remains at 8-6 with the USA team receiving a two point penalty for illegal modifications in last year’s warm up event.
Nonetheless, Ainslie will be in line to make history if he can prevent the New Zealanders from winning tonight to set up a tense final race.
