Poch ignites legend's Saints passion

Saints legend David Armstrong credits Mauricio Pochettino for “reigniting my passion” – for the first time in four decades!
The 1980s Dell star insists Pochettino’s current day side can emulate the success of the famous Saints team that finished second in the top flight almost 30 years ago.
Armstrong, right, was the club’s player of the season in the 1983-84 campaign under Lawrie McMenemy in which Saints achieved their highest ever finish.
He claims watching Saints play has “reignited his passion” for a style of football he has barely seen for 40 years when he was part of a successful Middlesbrough side.
Armstrong certainly doesn’t feel Saints’ current lofty league position is any fluke, and thinks there is better still to come.
“Watching them has reignited my passion,” he said.
“It’s the first time in 40 years I’ve seen a side play like we did at Middlesbrough - they close down, they hunt in packs, they pressurise the opposition.
“I’m very pleased to be able to say that for the first time in 40 years I recognised the qualities and the style I grew up with.”
He added: “The way they are playing is absolutely fantastic.
“All of the top teams are playing in European competitions as well and I think that’s a great advantage for Saints.
“They are going to give the top teams a real run for their money.
“The way they play is like a breath of fresh air for me.
“They can emulate if not better the 83-84 season.”
