Winchester win local hockey bragging rights
Champions Trojans trimmed Wanderers 3-1 at Battersea Park, while Winchester beat Hamble 2-1 in the Regional 1 derby at Satchell Lane.
Goals from teenager Piers Everleigh, Rory King and former Southampton University drag-flick specialist Mike Swinden earned Trojans the win points in South London.
Hamble v Winchester has historically not been short of spice and the lead-in to the game promised a competitive match.
Hamble took four points from last season’s derbies and the Winchester team that visited Hamble Community College contained three of Hamble’s players from this time last year.
The visitors were completely dominant for the first ten minutes of the game with the diving Stuart Swift just failing to connect with Stuart Tognarelli’s rifled far post cross in the first three minutes.
Two minutes later Winchester won the first penalty corner and after a few moments of pinball, Tognarelli squeezed a reverse-stick shot over the keeper to take a deserved lead.
Winchester could not sustain their dominance and Hamble started to create danger in and around the D.
Having won a short corner for their endeavours, Hamble used a slick routine to open up the defence for a clear shot that was slammed home by John Macleod to level the score.
Ten minutes later, Tognarelli found Swift in a deep right channel position and he swept in a cross for the rapid Craig Jeffreys to deflect-in from close distance.
The game then settled into a pattern which lasted the remainder of the match.
Hamble had few opportunities, snuffed out by the Winchester defence of Chris Jackson, Ed Player and Adam Tollefson (the latter playing against twin brother, Ian), while Winchester created numerous chances leading into the D but the final pass was disappointing or intercepted by the reliable Paul Barber.
Andy Winnett, who retired from first team action last season, scored in Winchester IIs’ 3-1 Snows Group Hampshire League defeat by Wimborne Wayfarers.
Tom Newitt and a drag flick from Todd Clarke led to WW’s opening two goals, Bashley (Rydal) cricketer Simon Ridley converting the third at the back post from a short corner.
