Le Tiss: Saints are in a dream position
10:28am Friday 18th October 2013 in Sport
Mauricio Pochettino’s men head to Old Trafford tomorrow hoping to win a league match there for the first time in 25 years.
If they do, there is a chance that they could climb to the top of the division, although they would need a lot of help from elsewhere.
“It’s incredible to think that, if that happened, we could go top of the Premier League,” said Le Tissier, writing in his blog on the Goalden Goals website.
“It’s absolutely a dream world for me as a Saints supporter, as I never thought I would see us in this position.”
Saints’ success this season has been built on a solid defensive base.
Le Tissier believes the improvement in that area has a lot to do with the club’s work in the summer transfer window.
“Southampton’s defence is very much their strength these days having conceded only two goals in seven games,” he said.
“We have the best defensive record in the Premier League and equal best with QPR in the entire Football League.
“Victor does a great job sitting there in midfield breaking things up, while Dejan has been outstanding at centre-back.
“I think we only paid Lyon seven or eight million pounds for him and, right at this moment, that seems to me the bargain of the season.
“It was a great bit of business by manager Mauricio Pochettino who went out in the summer and only strengthened the team in places he needed to.
“He didn’t go out scattering two and three million pounds on 12 or 13 players like Paolo Di Canio did at Sunderland.
“He pin-pointed the players he needed and I’ve been impressed with the signings he’s made.
“Saints are playing some decent stuff – they try to win the ball back as soon as they lose it.
“They work hard from the front and it’s paid dividends, especially in away games.
“And now they go to Old Trafford to face United who are not, in my view, as strong or dominant as a team as they once were under Sir Alex.
“They have already been beaten at home by West Brom-a result which was pretty much unheard of in past seasons.
“It’s the best chance in years of getting a result up there.”
