Poch: Saints are "extraordinary"
8:00am Monday 28th October 2013 in Sport
Mauricio Pochettino hailed his “extraordinary” Saints as they defeated Fulham 2-0 to complete the club’s best ever start to a top flight season.
After nine games Saints have amassed an incredible 18 points, conceding only three goals in the process.
That is one better than the tally of 17 points from nine games they picked up in 1983/84, the season they went on to finish second in the club’s best ever top flight campaign.
A delighted Pochettino said: “I want to congratulate my players because they put in an extraordinary performance.
“It’s not just about the players that are playing regularly but the ones that are not playing regularly that are on the bench.
“It shows we believe as a collective, we are playing as a collective and we are reaping the rewards of that.”
He added: “I have been saying for a couple of weeks now the sky’s the limit and we don’t set ourselves any limits.
“The most important thing is that we keep on learning, that we keep on improving, that we keep on playing as a team.
“The position in the table right now is not important, we need to keep performing as we have been doing.”
Another clean sheet also boosted Saints’ remarkable defensive record still further and Pochettino smiled: “I am very satisfied. I am very proud at another clean sheet.
“It makes me very happy to be part of this club and these people who make up Southampton Football Club.
“I am very happy, very proud.
“It’s not just the defence, it’s all about the collective work towards keeping possession.
“If we think about it the first defender when we don’t have the ball is Rickie Lambert so we are all defending at the same time.
“We are all wanting to keep possession and when we don’t have possession we work like crazy to get the ball back so it’s all about the collective work.”
Saints were thoroughly dominant against Fulham with the club’s brilliant performance making it an utterly one sided game.
Saints actually completed almost twice as many passes as their visitors during the 90 minutes but Pochettino laughed: “I think statistics are evil. They don’t really show anything. When you win they are very important, when you lose they are not as important.
“The most important thing aside from the three points was how we played.
“Statistics are relative and more than anything I am pleased with how we won.”
