Vase hero pitches in with Neil
NEW Winchester City boss Neil Hards will have a fellow FA Vase winner by his side when he takes his first game back in charge at the Denplan City Ground tonight.
Lloyd Webber, a member of the team that Hards memorably led to Vase glory in 2004, will be back on the scene for the Sydenhams League Cup tie against Sholing (7.45pm) having drift ed away from the club in recent weeks.
After breaking his wrist in the open ing game of the season against Moneyfields, Webber became disillusioned after struggling to hold down a place and was having talks about a possible return to his old club Folland Sports.
But Hards confirmed: “I’ve spoken to Lloyd and he’ll be there to give me a hand behind the scenes tonight – and he’s fit and available to play. “Lloyd’s a decent lad, he knows the players and he’ll be an ear-piece for me.
“As soon as I spoke to him and said I wanted him there, he said he’d come straight up.”
Apart from Liam Green, another member of that victorious Vase squad, Hards will be meeting Winchester’s players for the first time tonight after agreeing to succeed Graham Kemp at the helm.
The 51-year-old has twice watched City in recent weeks, against Sholing in the league and away to Verwood on Saturday, and has no plans to make sweeping changes to a side sitting a competitive fifth in the table.
“There can’t be a lot fundamentally wrong if they’re only two points off top spot and it wouldn’t be fair of me to chop and change things around,” he said.
“I’ve always been open and receptive to players and I’ll be chatting to them individually to see if they’re happy with what’s going on.
“I don’t ask them to like me, but I want them to like their working envi ronment and be united in what we do.
“I fully understand that some of them have got a bit of loyalty to the previous manager and I wouldn’t want anyone staying against their will or whatever.
“At this level football’s about enjoyment as well as winning things and they’ve got to be sure they want to give it a go.”
