Mauricio Pochettino putting no limits on what Southampton can achieve this season
Mauricio Pochettino is refusing to set any limits for his Saints side.
As the wider footballing world begins to wake up to the achievements of Saints this season questions are inevitably being asked of the manager as to whether this is a flash in the pan or something his side can sustain.
The Champions League target is regularly being bandied about and Pochettino responded: “Why not?
“Obviously we have to wait a few more months to know the result of that but I always say the grades should be put at the end of the season, not now.
“We’re a team who don’t set any limits to ourselves of what we can do and we want to keep on winning every single game that we play.”
He added: “So far we are really happy with the season we’re having and it’s fully down to the players and they deserve all the plaudits and all the credit.
“They fully accept everything we make them do and we are really happy about that.
“They put in 100 per cent effort in every training session so for us as a technical staff and a manager it’s a luxury to have these players.”
Pochettino also dismissed reports that Saints could be looking to sign another defender in the January transfer window.
That is hardly surprising given the defensive record of his team this season having conceded just three goals in the league so far.
“I think beyond the contributions of Jose Fonte and Lovren it’s more to do with the collective work and the collective effort of the team,” he reflected.
“Especially when the team doesn’t have the ball they make an amazing effort to get the ball back to recover possession.”
