Daily Echo: Clipper sailors to arrive in Sydney Clipper sailors to arrive in Sydney

HAMPSHIRE sailors taking part in the world's longest yacht race are starting to arrive in Sydney, Australia, over three months after setting off from the UK on their 40,000 odyssey.

In leg five of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, team Henri Lloyd won first place.

They were followed closely by second place OneDLL, whose crew includes 63-year-old Dave Richards from Southampton and skippered by Cowes-based Ollie Cotterell.

Qingdao, skippered by Gareth Glover from Gosport, has clinched third place.

Switzerland, whose crew includes former college principal Lindsey Noble from Winchester and Charlie Pickering, 58, from Southampton, are expected in later on this evening, UK time.

The rest of the fleet's progress has been hindered as they battle the “eastern Australian current” and the tactical decision of whether to go inshore or offshore in the last furlong.
