Lee Wort scored four times and Ashley Jarvis notched a hat-trick as Sholing went on a Sydenhams League goal bonanza, thrashing Downton 12-1 at the Silverlake Arena.

It was a record Wessex Premier Division win by Sholing, who were 7-1 up at half-time and even fluffed a first half penalty.

Downton, who struggled to field a side and had only one substitute on the bench, fell behind to a fourth minute free kick by Marc Diaper, which goalkeeper Charlie Aldridge could only parry into the corner.

Sholing doubled their lead through WORT when he was put through in the tenth minute, but Downton hit back with a well-taken response from Declan McGregor.

A rare headed goal by Tyronne Bowers restored Sholing’s two-goal advantage before Alex Sawyer made it 4-1.

Mid-way through a one-sided first half Wort scored Sholing’s fifth.

By half-time Sholing were out of sight – Jarvis scoring a sixth and WORT the seventh goal.

Aldridge was performing heroics in the Downton goal and capped a fine individual performance when he dived low to his left to keep out a penalty kick by Jarvis just before half-time.

But Jarvis atoned for his spot-kick miss by scoring twice to complete his hat-trick by the 67th minute, with Sholing now 9-1 up.

Downton battled on gamely, with Wort hitting the near upright before Nick Watts surged through on the right to send Sholing’s goal tally into double figures 12 minutes from the end.

WORT lobbed a clever fourth goal before Byron Mason came off the substitutes’ bench to complete Sholing’s record-breaking 12-1 victory.
