Beaten Saints stay top of their league

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

DON’T be downhearted by Saints’ losing start to 2014.

From being in third place in the Premier League in late November, the club have now banked just five points out of a possible 27 after yesterday’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

As a result, they remain ninth in the table but are now ten points adrift of the top six.

No doubt, ambitious chairman Nicola Cortese would have been dreaming of a higher place given the club’s great start to the season.

But reality needs to bite.

Saints were given a good run of early season fixtures which they capitalised on well when they had a settled side.

Unfortunately for them, a spate of injuries co-incided with a tough fixture list featuring games against Chelsea (twice), Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle, Tottenham and Everton.

Fans might have been annoyed Saints lost at home to Tottenham, but the Londonders went to Old Trafford yesterday and won there too.

The current top seven were the top seven finishers last season, so in that respect nothing has changed.

Newcastle, who finished below Saints last season, are eighth but still possessing many of the players that finished fifth in 2011/12.

It is not wrong, therefore, to say Saints are at present ‘top’ of their own league.

They are above all the clubs of a similar standing to themselves, and above a bigger one in Aston Villa.

All the clubs above Saints in the table have bigger histories, bigger stadiums and, for the most part, far bigger financial muscles to flex and bigger squads.

Regarding yesterday, where is the shame in losing at home to Chelsea?

The Blues were able to use squad rotation due to their large number of world class players.

Look at who they were able to bring into a side which had just beaten Liverpool – £50m Fernando Torres, £24m Juan Mata, £19m Ramires and £18m Andre Schurrle.

That shows the strength in depth Jose Mourinho has.

The manager was able to take £57m of Brazilian attacking midfield talent out of his starting line-up and onto the bench.

That meant £32m Willian and £25m Oscar were fresh legs when they were introduced to change the game in the second half.

Mauricio Pochettino did not have such luxuries available – nine of the players who started against Everton three days earlier starting again yesterday Saints currently have the most expensively-assembled squad in their history, and results have shown it is a good squad when fully fit.

But more money needs to be splashed if the club are serious about really wanting to break into the top six.

It goes without saying, really.

As does the fact that the upcoming league fixtures look a lot kinder to Saints.

Of their next seven games, only two are against clubs in the top ten – Arsenal (home) and Hull (away).

Pochettino has now overseen the worst run of his near year-long spell at St Mary’s.

A tough run of fixtures and some injuries have given him some excuses, though to be fair he has rarely moaned about them.

The next lot of games offer no such excuses, and most of the manager’s walking wounded should be available.

If Saints are worse off in the table after those seven games, then that should be the time for in-depth inquests about what direction the club moves with regards to the summer transfer window.

I am a happy camper so far this season cant be to upset about loosing to Chelsea, i am only really dissapointed about the home defeats to Villa and Spurs both games i thought we were not ourselvs. My only concern however is that when we go a goal down like against Everton and then Chelsea we take one of the better preforming players (Cork) who i felt was doing a good job in supporting the back four. I know its replacing a defesive player for an attackive player but when we did take him off we didnt look like scoring but conceeded more goals. And i dont rate Gaston as much as some people do... he is surposed to bring flair and class but i fail to see either consitantly enough.

Anyway armchair mananger moment over :) we have a little rest before the next premier league game which is good news and a tough cup game agaist Burnely. It will be interesting to see who gets selected for both sides it would be good to have a nice cup run.

See you at the West Brom game

It's not that it's easily forgotten. It's that we have come to expect more from our team now. It's great that we are still 9th but the way we are going, we will be sliding nearer the bottom half. We have had some tough games/injuries but we still need to man up and realise that we won't get through the season with the squad we have, and just the academy.

We still need to bring in a couple as no doubt 1 or 2 will leave in January. Losing to 'big' teams is ok but I feel we have the capacity to do better against them. We should not be losing to lesser teams like Villa, certainly not at home. We are leaking far too many at home now so we need to get back to as we were early on in season. I would still look for a defender, GK and a poacher.

Things happen, remember Arsenal lost at home to Villa. What do you mean we won't get through the season with this squad? Are we going to forfeit our place in the league and go on vacation? I wish you were with us on some cold away nights in league 1 and maybe you would have some appreciation.

Love that last sentence. Yep, my hat goes off to all those who followed the team all over the country during those difficult years at the wrong end of the Championship and then in League 1.

I'm glad those days are over, but on the few occasions that I was able to travel far and wide to places I thought we'd never play except, maybe, in one of the cups, I had a good time. Even in defeat, I met some lovely home fans, made friends with people who post on here and learnt to appreciate that football clubs come in many shapes and sizes. For every obscenely rich Chelsea, there's a Hartlepool and for every over-achieving Hull City (and well done to them) there's a club struggling (as we once were) - such as Coventry - whose fans deserve better. It certainly makes me appreciate our current position.

Quite often the echo gets criticism for its articles, but I feel credit has to also be given when they write something constructive. There has been a lot of criticism recently for the Saints team, but this is a great reality check by the echo. Congratulations.

I feel that it's a sign of the great job Saints have done that our fans have had their expectations raised so much from last season. Lets face it we only signed three players in the summer.

Yes we are all feeling a little disappointed following the recent results, but taking into account the injury problems to our squad that has seen all our recent signings miss some (Lovren) or all (wanyama and Boruc) of the recent games, there is much to be positive about going forward.

Well said. Two difficult days I remember - Tranmere away on my birthday, cheers, and the rearranged Birmingham game in the snow when no one wanted to get injured so there were no tackles, very 0-0, and the trains were all delayed due to vandalism. Much better now I feel.

Don't understand what all the panic is about? Ok our form hasn't been too great of late but we have played teams expecting a top 4 finish.....a spuds side with the new manager syndrome.....won a tricky fixture away to Cardiff very comfortably. Yet some posters on other threads are calling for the managers head....namely some idiot from Nottingham. We may not get the results against the big four this season but maybe they aren't taking us as lightly as last season, but we have the quality even without any new signings to beat all the teams below us in the league. Hopefully that might see us rise one or two positions come the end of the season.

Well said. Two difficult days I remember - Tranmere away on my birthday, cheers, and the rearranged Birmingham game in the snow when no one wanted to get injured so there were no tackles, very 0-0, and the trains were all delayed due to vandalism. Much better now I feel.
Ha! Tranmere! Yes, that was one of the shockers. I remember watching the Brum game on a live stream. Fox got two yellows, one for a good tackle and the other for a nothing push, and Guly almost won it at the end. Felt for the fans who struggled on trains, in coaches and in cars even to get out of Brum. As far as I know, all made it safely home in time for breakfast.

I highly appreciate where we have come from, don't get me wrong. If I lived in England I would go too. Unfortunately like many others I don't, but I do go whenever I am over. I listen to every game online and suffer so am there in spirit!! It's great to be able to stream games now.
I hope we get back to our form but I think that we still need a couple of faces as the thinness of squad and inexperience has shown with the injuries we have had.
I know how far we have come (more than a lot) but we also expect more from the team now and to take it to the next stage, which is normal.
But rising and falling can happen so quickly in the PL so everyone needs to be on their toes. But everyone knows that, don't they?

Hi Insane

Happy New year to you, the Old boy and 'er in doors.

No word of a lie, I dreamt about buses last night. I was on a bus that was absolutely packed with rubbish. All the seats were covered and the aisle, too. I had to push a load of waste paper off a seat just to sit down.

I guess it was the Eastney to Fratton express.

I reckon our next journey should be more like the German high-speed train (ICE). That would be a bit less Reg Varney and a bit more Bayern.

Chelsea were very good and I think Jose sort of said that was as good as they had been all season.

Yet again, according to one report, Saints had 52% possession against Chelsea. Has anyone kept a note of how many matches Saints have dominated possession. I bet it is quite often. The BIG BUT is that we have not scored the goals such possession would be expected to produce.

Ricky has not carried last season forward although perhaps he has not had the starts or the service, Osvaldo - what do you say other than "where is he", Ramirez (others have said it all). Jay has been the success but the side needs to put their chances away much better. It's simple - you don't win if you don't score and let's hope the net can be found a lot more this year.

Agree with others that this was a good article by the Echo. On the nail.

Remember, Southend 2 Portsmouth 1. A super start for me in 2014,

Happy New Year to all you guys. Up the Saints - forever!!

There are Leagues within the Premier League and we have improved and some would argue moved up a League since last Season.

We do not have the spectre of relegation like Wet Spam who were above us in the League last year - so it's NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM.

CANNOT WAIT FOR WANYAMA AND BORUC TO BE BACK and Osvaldo to feature to drive us to the WINS.

Could not expect Gaston to get a goal yesterday like his spectacular effort at Everton. They are just one a Season - bit like Osvaldo's bit of magic and if you can remember back to Tadanari Lee. Who did we expect to score yesterday in the first half. That said we did well to contain them and did have half chances to go ahead.

HEADS UP FOR MORE WINS - AND TAKING THE FIGHT TO THE OPPOSITION AWAY FROM HOME.

OUR SUPERB AWAY SQUAD WERE A CREDIT TO THE CLUB AT CARDIFF.

NEED TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS SOON.

I suppose most of us were overawed by the fantastic start when in 3rd in the League and I personally did get carried away understandably but I am very pleased my Team are 9th and may creep up the League gradually.
I would like to be a Fly on the wall of NCs office with Mpo to know if they are more than satisfied with the Teams position or did they expect to be higher?
Yesterday proved to be the toughest to date in my opinion, they were out played by the quality that Chelsea have with the luxury of some world class Players, I wish I could predict Saints final position but it does seem where they are is where they will finish 5 positions up from last season so that is progress.
There's no doubt Mpo has brought an exciting style of Football to Southampton that even the neutrals have enjoyed, I'm not an expert on Football and won't criticize Mpo for his selection I have 100% trust in him, injuries have not helped, my mate is a season Ticket holder is quite knowledgeable Sir Alex that is and he said the Team miss Wanyama, he wasn't disappointed with Cork but said Wanyama has the better skills and strength.

I'm not a Soothsayer but I think total points at the end of the season will be 58, can anyone better that? COYR

True , but against some great sides they have had 5 of the back 7 out injured with a 3rd choice goal keeper !!

Against Villa 80% possession , and Villa 3 chances 3 goals .......... Things will work out !

9th - 27 points ! ......... the top 7 is much stronger this season, remember where we have come from and where we are now !

Easily forgotten !

We have watched some great football this season and we will again , 9th place finish would be a top 2nd season in the Prem and apart from the last 25 mins against Chelski we have no been outclassed this season ...................

Roll on Burnley!
True , but against some great sides they have had 5 of the back 7 out injured with a 3rd choice goal keeper !!

Against Villa 80% possession , and Villa 3 chances 3 goals .......... Things will work out !
Back 7? I thought we played a "high pressing game" ;)
