Dani Osvaldo suspended for three games and fined £40,000

Daily Echo: OSVALDO OSVALDO

Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo has been fined £40,000 and suspended for three games for his part in a touchline fracas at Newcastle on Saturday, December 14, the Football Association has announced.

Saints drew 1-1 in Barclays Premier League action that day but club record signing Osvaldo, wactching from the sidelines after already being substituted, reacted angrily to a nasty tackle in stoppage time.

The 27-year-old's ban takes immediate effect after the charge of violent conduct was proved by an FA independent regulatory commission hearing.

Osvaldo is therefore ruled out of tomorrow's third round FA Cup clash with Burnley at St Mary's Stadium.

Unsavoury scenes were sparked by Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin's yellow card for a late tackle on Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara.

Staff and players from both benches became embroiled in a touchline ruckus, with referee Mike Jones sending Newcastle coach Andy Woodman and Saints back-room staff member Toni Jimenez to the stands.

Newcastle coach Woodman has been fined £1,250 and warned as to his future conduct after he admitted a charge of improper conduct.

Osvaldo, fit again after illness, will miss Saturday's FA Cup clash and Barclays Premier League matches against West Brom and Sunderland.

He will be free to play in Southampton's home Premier League fixture against Arsenal on January 28.

Careful, it was the Club that delayed the decision by appealing, if it is to be believed that he had a genuine injury, that has worked against us as he could have served the suspension while the injury healed. The information is a bit sparse, does anyone know what he was accused of doing, and why did he react so violently, you don't do that without provocation however short tempered you are.

40k and three games is an absolute joke, for something that was no more than handbags.
I think we should complain like mad. Might not get this overturned, but it might put pressure on refs to give us some decisions in the big games coming up.
Don't really want to think that way, but the treatment we've had on a few occasions now seems so unfair, I'll take a bit of sympathy if it helps us get three points..

I'm not sure that Saints delayed it. Osvaldo was given until 28 December to comment on the alleged offence, not to appeal a ban. The FA have taken till now to come to a decision, by which time he's fit to play again after missing several matches through injury.

All a nonsense.

This all seems a bit OTT to me, when compared with the pittance of a fine handed down to the Newcastle coach.

It does appear that the powers that be have it in for us at the moment. Clattenburg is a loose cannon who gets away with too much, and that includes incompetence.

If you have anything relevant to explain what he actually did, I would be glad to hear it, can't make a judgement without knowing what happened. The charge is a very serious one and you have to asume that the FA have enough proof, but they haven't told anyone what it was. The guy that started the fracas, got a minimal fine and a warning to his future behaviour, something is not quite right here.

£40,000 (and a 3-match ban) against £1,250. That's 32 times different.

Dani should have hit the t0$$er 32 times - 16 in each b0ll0ck.

But seriously, let's wait for the next similar situation - it'll come - then compare the punishment. If it's vastly different for a player from a big club, it will further prove what most of us already think about football administration bias. THEN NC should throw the book at the bu66ers.

The FA should be more open - fans are entitled to know the facts and evidence upon which these important judgements are made.

Was it a hard blow to the testicles or just a glancing shot? Both nuts or just one hit? Which one? For how long were they/was it sore. Any bruising? Was photographic evidence of scrotum sac submitted? Was the injury made worse because, unbeknown to Dani the Newcastle coach has a very small and therefore non-protective willy? How big is the coach's willy?

Was the truth of the matter that the Newcastle coach lashed out at Dani in a fit of pENis envy? How big is Dani's willy?

If you have anything relevant to explain what he actually did, I would be glad to hear it, can't make a judgement without knowing what happened. The charge is a very serious one and you have to asume that the FA have enough proof, but they haven't told anyone what it was. The guy that started the fracas, got a minimal fine and a warning to his future behaviour, something is not quite right here.
I totaly agree with you Os, to be fair i have n' t the faintest idea what he did; but it seems he cant keep out of trouble. I remember an incident with him folowing a foul on AL, by the touchline at SM's....he was in there pushin and hoving, he'd only been at the club 5 mins, had nothing to do with him. Rickie Lamert is twice the player Osvaldo is; so if WH want him we should ask £30m or him........you dont see SRLgetting 3 match bans and £40grand fines...that was all i was saying.
Maybe if the Spammers do want a striker, we could offer them the temperamental dud one and we keep the professional, level headed match winning team player who is still undervalued by so many: methinks if he was called Lamberto he would get more favour from our Poch and our recent influx of knowall Premier/Euro fans- you know, up a level, dream team selectors who don't even know or care about our recent journey.

sorry for the spelling my keyboard seems to be playing up...keeps missing letters!!
It's not your keyboard at fault, it is a feature of this site, the missing letter syndrome, it appears that when you type, there are all sorts of cookies and adverts popping away and while they are doing that letters vanish as you type them, just need to be careful and proof read before hitting the submit button.

I think it was thought that at a level headed club like ours and the fact he has become a family man, he might have been a reformed character and we could rehabilitate him into being a normal subserviant, run of the mid Premier table footballer, it would appear he is more of a loose cannon than we expected, yet another flawed genius?

Nothing apart from scoring a wonder goal that gained us a point against the Prem League favourites that is.

I think you will find that Punch has gone for the season. He's scored one goal for Palace and that was a pen. He's too one dimensional for us, always looks to cut inside on his left peg and rarely gets to the byline to get in crosses for Ricky. Agree with you about Artur though.

With our lack of goals at the moment,is it not worth giving Puncheon one more chance, with the manager whispering in his ear saying this is what we expect from you.

Are you a relation of his? He isn't good enough at the moment, there is no room for his one trick pony moves in the present set up.

what art of `hes gone for the season` do you not understand?

I wish people would get over this `punch is the answer` idea. he played well for us in some games but he isn't a world class player and wont fit in to our current style.

You are quite entitled to see it that way. I prefer to see it that it shows what he is capable of. We've had plenty of players getting grief because they will never be good enough. Artur was one, JRod another, Stephen Davis, Gaston etc etc. All have or will come good given the chance and the backing of the fans.
