  • Mauricio Pochettino's side remain in ninth place in the Premier League

4:53pm

Saints 1 West Brom 0. Successive West Brom corners in injury time after Boruc palms away the first, but Howard Webb blows his whistle as goalkeeper Ben Foster attempts an acrobatic kick in the penalty area.

4:49pm

Guly Do Prado makes a rare appearance in place of Rodriguez

4:47pm

Wonderful point-blank save from Artur Boruc on his return, denying Shane Long following Ridgwell's precise pass from the left. That save was as good as a goal at the other end.

4:45pm

WBA sub: Striker Matej Vydra has come on for midfielder Amalfitano

4:42pm

Ward-Prowse on for Lallana

4:39pm

Ramirez attempts to find the far corner from the right-hand edge of the area, but misses the target by a big margin

4:37pm

WBA sub: Gera on for McAuley

4:35pm

WBA sub: Anelka off, Berahino on

4:30pm

Olsson booked for high studs-up challenge on Lallana

4:26pm

Daily Echo:

1-0! Lallana's broken the deadlock, sweeping in Gaston's first-time, left-footed pass from the right. 'Happy Birthday Mum' was shown to  be writ large over the t-shirt underneath his shirt as he celebrated.

4:22pm

Gaston won a free-kick on the edge of the area following Anelka's challenge, but curled it tamely into the arms of Foster

4:19pm

It's not happening for Saints so far today but let's see if Gaston Ramirez can spark this game into life. He's on for Cork, so Davis drops into a holding role alongside Schneiderlin.

4:15pm

Shane Long booked for late tackle on Schneiderlin

4:11pm

Today's attendance is 28,610. Only the visits from Sunderland and Swansea have attracted fewer to St Mary's in the Premier League this season

4:10pm

Davis shot blocked. Saints have definitely gone up a gear since the break but we're still without a much-needed goal

4:08pm

Daily Echo:

Rodriguez did brilliantly to dispossess Mulumbu and then cut inside the covering defender. But after creating the opportunity he missed the target with just the keeper to beat

4:06pm

Great defending from Lovren to slide in and disposess Shane Long without giving away a corner

4:03pm

Saints 0 WBA 0. Rodriguez shinned a shot over the bar in injury-time. It's safe to say the second half will be an improvement

3:50pm

Wonder what new West Brom boss Pepe Mel is thinking as he watches from the director's box at St Mary's...

Daily Echo:

3:47pm

Jack Cork battles for the ball. Sums up the half really - a battle with very little action to speak of in the final third...

Daily Echo:

3:45pm

Daily Echo:

Two Clyne crosses fail to clear the first man but the second deflects to Steve Davis, whose clever outside-of-the-foot ball finds Lambert. The No 7 responds with a left-footed volley that flies high and wide. Goal of the season contender if it had gone in.

3:43pm

Lambert's cross is headed behind for a corner by Olsson. From the flag kick West Brom counter-attack, but it comes to nothing

3:37pm

Lambert's direct free-kick from the corner of the penalty area cannons into the 3-man wall. Sums up the game so far

3:35pm

Lambert thumps a 20-yarder at Ben Foster, who collects comfortably

3:30pm

Dejan Lovren booked for foul on Shane Long, one of the goalscorers when West Brom won the corresponding game last season 3-0, shortly after Steven Reid's free-kick flies over the bar

3:25pm

Luke Shaw's left-flank cross is delivered with pace into the six-yard box but Gareth McAuley deflects it skywards at the near post and Ben Foster holds on as it plummets with Lambert lurking

3:21pm

Jack Cork also fires wide from the edge of the area

3:14pm

Davis drills wide of goal after a mistake from Jonas Olsson

3:12pm

More Cruyff-like close control from Lallana was followed by a clever left-footed pass from inside the area  for Rickie Lambert, who fired across goal and beyond the far post

3:09pm

Lallana's Cruyff turn created space, taking him away from two West Brom defenders. His shot was comfortably saved by Ben Foster.

2:57pm

Hands shaken, silly little jackets off...almost game time

2:48pm

All the players are off the field now with just over ten minutes until kick off

2:43pm

Adam Lallana is the first Saints player to head back down the tunnell as the warm-ups start to come to an end

2:29pm

West Brom have made seven alterations after their FA Cup exit to Crystal Palace, including the return of Youssouf Mulumbu after injury.

2:26pm

West Brom will have a new manager watching from the stands in the shape of Pepe Mel, who was appointed on Thursday night.

Keith Downing and Dean Kiely, who have led the Baggies with some credit for the five games since Steve Clarke's departure, are to assist Mel, whose coaching CV also lists the likes of Alaves and Getafe.

The pair will be on the touchline this weekend, with Mel in the stands.

Mel takes over a side out of the FA and League cups and 14th in the Premier League, some four points off the drop zone.

2:20pm

Artur Boruc straight back into the Saints side to face West Brom after a six week absence.

The Polish stopper had been ruled out with a fractured hand but has been brought immediately back into the team at the expense of Kelvin Davis.

That is one of five changes from the side that defeated Burnley in the FA Cup.

Regular centre halves Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren are back in, as were Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez with Maya Yoshida, Jos Hooiveld, James Ward-Prowse and Gaston Ramirez the men to miss out.

Guly do Prado is amongst the subs after two and a half months out following a knee operation.

2:06pm

WBA: Foster, Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Ridgewell, Amalfitano, Morrison, Mulumbu, Brunt, Anelka, Long.

Subs: Myhill (gk), Lugano, Berahino, Sinclair, Vydra, Gera, Yacob.

2:05pm

Subs: K. Davis (GK), Yoshida, Ramírez, Ward-Prowse, Guly, Hooiveld, Gallagher.

2:04pm

Saints: Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Cork, Schneiderlin, S. Davis, Lallana (c), Rodriguez, Lambert.

2:01pm

Artur Boruc starts for Saints after a six-week absence

1:50pm

Saints manager  Mauricio Pochettino in today's programme: "We are keen to get back on track with results and performances, especially at home, so it was good to get our first result of the New Year here with last wekeend's victory over Burnley in the FA Cup...as a square I feel we are stronger both in a mental and physical sense for our experiences over the busy December and Christmas schedule...we have learned the lessons from playing many of the top teams in a short space of time."

I feel the team will now go on a run, possibly overtaking Newcastle, and possibly - if one of either Tottenham or Everton go through a bit of an injury crisis, or the Sherwood Honeymoon ends - one of them too, leaving us somewhere around 7th at the end of the season. Can't see any of the other teams above us losing enough points for us to catch them, or any of the teams below us being good enough to overtake us. I'd call that a great season, and an excellent base for building next season with a couple of quality recruits in the summer. If we get anyone who represents quality and value in the window I wouldn't mind, but I won't be upset if we do no business at all and give the academy players a chance to get some game time.

Of course, for that scenario to work we have to start back on a good run by beating West Brom today; it seems we keep getting hit by the 'new manager' syndrome, though, so it might not be as straightforward as I would have liked. But, since I believe in the Saints, I think we'll win 2-0.

However, since that's the score Lawrenson predicted it will probably be something very different, but that's my tuppence worth.

Sorry, Tony, just felt like an early sing-song.

I do tend to agree with you but as I was there last year for the 0-3, I'm going for revenge - 3-0 Saints. Gaston to score (revenge for his sending off).

Reminds me of a WBA game at The Dell many years ago. WBA spent 90 minutes with 10 players not just behind the ball but in their own box. The most tepid, boring match I can remember from that era. What made it worse is that I had left my season ticket at home and the 4rse in the ticket office wouldn't give me an entry pass, so I had to buy another ticket.

Norgie, I'd settle for a late, late Guly winner right now.

On a negative note, we made hard work of beating a poor WBA, on a positive note, we won playing badly. And, by 'badly' I should add that there was a lot of decent football, just that there was also a sense that too many players were not at their best.

Thank you Boruc; had nothing much to do, then gained back 2 of the points he feels (unfairly) that he owes us.

its always harder to play against a team who `don't want to play` though stras. they even left their best striker on the bench until near the end.
putting 10 men behind the ball in the way they did today reminded me of the way that hoof play. we needed a touch of class to unlock them today and we got it from gaston and lalla.
happy with the win, its what we needed and we have Boruc to thank as well.
Boruc again showed why he is ne of the best keepers in the prem. it helps that the defence was strong again. we are getting our players back to fitness and will start to climb the table again.

Chambers has done well and improves the more he plays but he is still young and it's right that he isn't picked every week.

Meanwhile, along with many on here, I believe Clyne is probably the best English right back around at the moment.

That said, this was possibly the worst he has ever played in a Saints' shirt. He'll know that and will be fine next week.

Yep! I was very disappointed with West Brom. I hope some of their fans see what we think of them today. Nothing against them as a club but three (maybe four) things stood out.

1. 10 men behind the ball - DULL, DULL, DULL!!!
2. Time wasting from the first minute - DULL, DULL, DULL!!!
3. Even at 1-0, with a couple of exceptions near the end, they showed as much ambition as a go-kart in a grand prix.

You have to wonder how they almost won at The Bridge.

Add to that the annoying, diving, cheating Shane 'I WILL win a dubious free kick before the end' Long and the fact that, under several of their previous managers, they were a team that always tried to play football the right way and I feel rather sad for their fans. They'll stay up, but only because teams like Fulham, Palace and Spam are worse.

That was a heck of a gamble to take Corky off, he was playing out of his skin, but wow did it work well, full marks Poch. Great Officiating all around, not sure that Dejan deserved a card, and have seen red given for the tackle that took Lallana out, but our record against ten men is notorious so I am glad Howard Webb kept it level. Not a spectacle, but a clean sheet and actual backing from the crowd when they could easily have got frustrated by the negative tactics from Albion, I think we deserved all three points well done all concerned.

You don't phone, you don't write::::
Ha! He's one BAD brother, Warrens.

You two going to be at the Liverpool match? If I can get tickets, that'll be my next match and a chance to have a beer (or, in your case, Warrens, a chance to have about 30 beers).
See you there Strass. Thats my next game.
Great! Next beer's on Seed, isn't it? Then it's Slugger's round ..... then Bill's ......

Station pre-match or JT afterwards? Or both?
I missed you last time you were over. I'll buy you a pint in the JT after we beat the scousers.
Excellent! See you there.

Of course, we could make it double or quits by pitching little Velleity against one of the little Strassies on the pool table.

No pressure, kids!

Weren't they just awful? I'm amazed they have any points at all with Shane(the diver) Long and Nicolas(over the hill )Anelka as their strike force. Only one team trying to play and we got our just reward with a rare moment of quality. Last season Mulumbu was their main man. Today Spider was never far away from him and snuffed him out pretty well. Jack did a great job too. Nice to see a ref not trying to be the centre of attention and there didn't seem to be any contentious moments. Great save from Artur too.
