Ramirez inspires Saints to West Brom win

Daily Echo: Adam Lallana celebrates scoring the winner. Adam Lallana celebrates scoring the winner.

Saints picked up their first home league win since the start of November as they defeated West Brom 1-0 at St Mary’s.

In a game in which Saints were always on top but struggled to create chances against a well organised West Brom side, watched from the director’s box by their newly appointed manager Pepe Mel, it took the second half introduction of Gaston Ramirez to spark a goal.

Daily Echo:

He flicked a great pass round the corner to Adam Lallana who delivered what proved to be the winner on 66 minutes.

Mauricio Pochettino's side deserved what was only their second league win in ten attempts.

West Brom's defence, led by the impressive Gareth McAuley, frustrated the hosts until Ramirez came on.

The Uruguay international was sent off as the Baggies won 3-0 at St Mary's in April, but had a more positive impact this time as his superb flick resulted in Lallana prodding past Ben Foster.

Daily Echo:

West Brom attacked in numbers as they looked to snatch a draw, with only an exquisite reaction save from Artur Boruc preventing Shane Long netting a last-gasp equaliser.

The point-blank stop showed just why the Poland goalkeeper was brought straight back into Pochettino's side after missing six weeks with a fractured hand.

Saints began the brighter at St Mary's, with Lallana forcing Foster into the first save of the afternoon, albeit an easy one, after eight minutes.

The Saints captain was soon involved again as his chipped cross deflected kindly into the path of fellow England international Rickie Lambert, who, despite being off-balance, came close with left-footed strike across the face of goal.

Daily Echo:

Steven Davis and Jack Cork had poor efforts from distance as Saints continued in the ascendancy, although without turning their dominance into clear-cut chances.

Daily Echo:

Any crosses were being well dealt with by the West Brom defence, most notably a whipped Luke Shaw ball that McAuley intercepted as Jay Rodriguez waited to put home.

Steven Reid had West Brom's first opportunity of the afternoon after 27 minutes, with his powerful long-range free-kick flying over.

The Baggies soon had another set-piece after Dejan Lovren was booked for taking down Long, with the Ireland international receiving treatment as the resulting free-kick was punched away by Boruc.

It was a rare period of respite for the visitors as Saints penned them back for the remainder of the first half.

After Foster comfortably dealt with a long-range Lambert strike, the 31-year-old's cross was flicked behind by McAuley as Rodriguez lurked at the backpost before both saw wayward long-range efforts fly over.

The half-time break was a welcome relief to the 28,610 souls inside St Mary's, although Saints came close to breaking the deadlock six minutes after the restart.

The returning Youssouf Mulumbu was caught out by Rodriguez, who burst through the middle at pace and slotted just wide.

Reid blocked a Davis effort moments later as Saints pushed for an opener, with McAuley blocking a Lambert strike as the hosts continued to press.

Ramirez was brought on in a bid to add a creative spark, with his first impact to earn a free-kick from which he tested Foster.

Daily Echo:

The Uruguay international had a more telling impact in the 66th minute, meeting a pass from Nathaniel Clyne with a delightful first-time flick for Lallana to slot past Foster.

Daily Echo:

The Saints captain celebrated by showing a T-shirt wishing happy birthday to his mum, who will have no doubt winced when Jonas Olsson earned a booking for clattering her son.

The West Brom defender joined team-mate Long in Howard Webb's notebook, with the latter joined in attack by Saido Berahino for the closing stages.

Zoltan Gera and Matej Vydra followed the England Under-21 international on to the field as Downing looked to maintain his unbeaten league run.

Daily Echo:

West Brom would have done just that was it not for Boruc, whose point-blank reaction save stopped Long directing home Liam Ridgewell's low cross at the death.

Would like to see the Olsson foul on Lallana, again.
Could have been red, from what I saw.

Another decision, that may have cost us, just as the free kick against Shaw, on Long, in about the 89th minute, wasn't a foul, but gave a good scoring opportunity to the Baggies.
Well done Saints and a special welcome back for Boruc, for saving that Long shot, from 4 yards.

That's payback for the one he gave to Stoke.

Saints needed that win badly, no games is easy in the Premiership unless the opposition don't turn up, all points have to be worked for and listening to Adam and Dave Saints had to grind it out for the 3 points, it's good for morale and now the Supporters would love the Team to up the ratio from 1&1/2 points per game to 2 per game until the last kick of the season, this would give Saints 62 points and we'd all be happy with that for the 2nd season back in the Premiership and one final bit for the Icing on the Cake win the FA Cup please COYR

We really needed and deserved that win today, well done to the team for making sure of it.
It would have been a complete travesty if West Brum had scored from that ridiculously harshly awarded free-kick at the end there, but great we held on!

Hope we can get at least a point at Pus Goyet's lot next week, then we can get some academy players out for Yeovil and perhaps Osvaldo could get a warm up in that too, and then we can take our revenge against the ARSEnal on the 28th!

8 wins now, just 1 less than last season's final tally and we've still got 17 games to grind out a few more.

Our passing accuracy and final balls were off today but through 2 moments of genius we ground out 3 points. Great to see a clean sheet. Onwards and upwards!

I expect no one to agree with me, but it was more, the shot hitting Boruc, than him saving it. Having said that, we deserved to win. I think also that taking Cork off let them back into the game. maybe Clyne should have been subbed instead. Looked a little rusty. This is just my take on the game. To me they are all stars. A good team against a spoiling one today. Three very good points. WBA has made it tough for a lot of top teams.

Nice to see us winning a bit ugly for a change. Sure, we dominated, but mostly because West Brom were dire. We were definitely not at our best. But it's results that matter and we stuck in there and got the goal. That's the mark of champions. A much needed three points.

We're in a league of our own at the moment; six points off 8th but, depending on results today, also at least four points above 10th. This could go up to as many as seven.

Come off it, that goal at STOKE WAS A FREAK GOAL. The two centre backs let it bounce making no attempt too deal with it thinking, like everybody else, that it would roll into artur's hands. The wind that day cause the goal not our goalie. Arsenal 100% his fault.
Olsson should of seen red for that tackle but too be fair i thought the ref scored 8 out of ten today Good three points ,lets build on that by getting right behind the boys like we did today when they needed us.

You could be pedantic and say that it hit Boruc because he was in the right place in the first place, anticipation is everything in this kind of situation, it happens so quickly that there is more instinct than luck involved.

He still had to move his leg to make the save, so that's instinct to me and what Boruc is all about... IMO
