Hobbs targets TV star
Southampton light-heavyweight Chris Hobbs is targeting boxing’s latest TV star.
Arfan Iqbal powered into the top ten of the British ratings in front of the Channel Five cameras last year – and Hobbs plans to end his unbeaten record in 2014.
Former Army man Hobbs, pictured, aims to make it four wins out of four in Portsmouth on Saturday, February 8 – and says he wants to meet Iqbal later in the year.
“I didn't rate him at all,” said the 26 year-old, “and as soon as he meets someone who hits him back he will lose.
“I would take him apart with long-range boxing. I would definitely take a fight with him.” Hobbs also has Southern Area champion Leon Senior and unbeaten Andreas Evangelou on his hit list this year.
“By the end of the year I want to be fighting for titles,” said Hobbs. “That’s my target and I will take the fights I need to take to get there.
“I haven’t fought any journeymen yet and don’t want to fight any in the future either.”
Hobbs ended a 10-month break from the ring with a points win over Angelo Crowe in Fareham last September.
Hobbs didn't lose a round on the referee’s scorecard – and Crowe proved his capabilities by ending the unbeaten record of Alex Gibbens in his next fight with a shock one-round win.
Hobbs wasn’t happy with his performance, however.
“I won badly,” he said. “I didn’t box as well as I could. I was rusty and I’m going to be much more aggressive in my next fight.”
A former world champion has been helping Hobbs prepare for his fight at the Pyramid Centre.
Tony Oakey powered to Commonwealth and WBU world honours in his exciting ring career and he’s got back in the ring to spar Hobbs.
“Tony is really pushing me,” said Hobbs. “He has loads of experience, is still very fit and shows me what I should be doing.
“I’m looking forward to taking another step on my journey to the title on February 8.”
Tickets for the show are available from 07517 121544.
