AND then there was one….

After a depressing Saturday in the FA Vase for Sydenhams Wessex clubs, Dave Diaper’s Sholing will be the league’s sole representatives in today’s last-16 draw.

While the Boatmen’s scheduled fourth-round tie at home to Hullbridge Sports was postponed on Friday due to a waterlogged pitch, the games involving Blackfield & Langley and Alresford Town got the go-ahead.

But it was bad news all round with both clubs crashing to away defeats against Toolstation Western Premier opposition.

Wessex champions Blackfield went down 3-0 to table-topping Larkhall Athletic, while Alresford’s bubble was burst 2-0 at mid-table Hallen.

Even an inspired show by Blackfield goalkeeper Rory Anderson failed to keep Larkhall at bay. The Bath-based outfit – who haven’t dropped a league point at home all season – led by an unstoppable Tyler Sibbick strike at the break. Sibbick struck again in the second half before sub Nat Auckland put the icing on the home cake.

Luckless Alresford hit the woodwork no fewer than four times in their tie at Hallen.

But, having somehow held back the tide, the hosts stole a 70th-minute lead when Ben Bament’s cross-shot found the back of the net.

The Magpies had chances to level but Bament struck again on the break with five minutes remaining as Hallen completed a hat-trick of Vase wins over Wessex sides this season having previously disposed of Whitchurch United and Cowes Sports. Sholing’s delayed tie against Essex Senior League side Hullbridge is rescheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.45pm) at the Silverlake Arena.
