Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez are set to be out for between six and eight weeks, Saints assistant boss Jesus Perez has confirmed.

The pair were stretchered off during the latter stages of last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland, and are both now set for an extended spell on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage.

“They’ve confirmed serious injuries, both ankles,” said Perez. “Probably they are ruled out for six to eight weeks.

"We are trying to accelerate their recovery, and the medical staff prepared different strategies to try to recover the players as soon as possible.

“But for some weeks both are out.”

The Croatian Football Association had earlier this week reported that Lovren was due to be out for three to four weeks.

However, the problem has now been revealed to be more serious than that.

Perez himself admitted that Saints had not initially expected the centre half’s injury to be as bad as Ramirez’s.

“We expected a minor injury from Dejan Lovren and more serious for Gaston, but at the end they have similar injuries – damage of ligaments,” he said. “But we hope to recover them as soon as possible.”

Hope they come back fitter than ever, no rush we have adequate cover for Lovren and Ramirez is only bit-part at the moment anyway.

Doubt either will rush back, they'll be more focused on being fit for Brazil, and Lovren has done enough this season to earn a rest anyway.

Yes indeed, we needed another centre half before this but now it's essential. Ramirez we can cope with (which says a lot about him although he was beginning to look promising again) but centre halves..... So....

Dear Ms Leibherr,
We'd like a strapping, athletic 6'4" centre half who can go for 90 minutes and barely break into a sweat.
oh.... you've already been looking....

Alternatively, break out the Poch! He can roll back the years with a long haired wig and even scythe Michael Owen down for fun when BTsport turn up. Actually, forget the wig and career U turn, could you just scythe the little berk in half anyway. For Charity obviously. Ta.

Yoshida's problem is not enough games he is rusty comes in for the odd game. In fairness for a lot of last season after the first ten games, he and Fonte looked tight. and averaged conceding roughly a goal a game. We do though need another centre half and it would be seen as an act of intent by the owner. Astori would be good, why buy one for the interim when we can buy a good one for three and four years. Whether now or summer we are going to need one, makes sense to get one now. IMO.

T he referee is partly to blame for Lovren's injury. If he had done his job Ramirez would have received treatment, Brown would have been off and play would have stopped before the second injury. A disgrace as is the fact the FA have not taken retrospective action, Brown had both feet off the ground when he made the challenge, bet none of our defenders would get away with a tackle like that. Shows the double standards applied by the Football authorities. If precious Hazard trips himself up there is an almost automatic booking for the nearest defender as Callum Chambers knows. Shame really as otherwise the referee had a a decent game. Who says cheating isn't alive and well in the English game and some of it appears to be institutionalised.

It's a great shame that these injuries( especially Dejan) have come when we have a run of games coming up where we could easily pile up a good few victories in a row. I think Yosh will be an adequate substitute as he did OK last year but we sure don't want any more injuries.

Alarmingly, a Green Party spokeswoman has said this morning that the growing number of football injuries are caused by slippery pitch surfaces resulting directly from global warming. Injuries will rise by a frightening 150% by 2040 at the current rate of carbon emission.

I think the club should make all our players sell their really big cars and cycle to Staplewood.

adjusting the table accordingly we would still be top 5.
Not arguing about denied penalty's, biased refs just a lack of killer instinct….sort it out MoPo.
Agree Warren. Rodriguez is a great prospect and is our leading scorer but he is very wasteful in front of goal. Needs to work on his conversion rate. Think the Lambert Lallana partnership is looking good though.

Agree warrens , on ratio, shots on goal and goals scored not impresive. We need Os to get amongst the goals this weekend. Rickie too play as a CF , we should win by 2 or3 goals.

Adequate cover for Lovren, um no we do not, far from it.

It's my fault. At half time I commented that Foy was having a good game.

Then came the second half. To me, it felt like someone had been in to see him. (Not that lovable Gus, surely!) In that second half, there was a short period of play in which three or four Sunderland players were kicking lumps out of one or two Saints players (I can't remember who it was). Finally, after a 'nothing' tackle, Foy gave Sunderland a free kick. The writing was on the wall.

My quote on the match thread at 2:17 pm says it all, i.e. "Funny how a lot of decisions seem to be going against us this half or am I imagining it?"
In fact I wasn't imagining it, it was a matter of fact, and the resulting injury to Gaston was partially down to another decision that didn't go our way.

Whether now or summer we are going to need one, makes sense to get one now. IMO.
Im with you Milton Rd on this one, he's not getting enough game time.

I think Yoshida wasnt that bad in the latter half last season and struck up a good partnership with Fonte. With Wanyama back, maybe these three will crystalise into a formidable partnership.

Confidence is everything, and Fonte got this with Lovren, now he needs to return the favour with Yoshida
