Jose Fonte posts photo of black eye he suffered following alleged headbutt by teammate Dani Osvaldo

Jose Fonte has posted a photo on his Instagram page showing the black eye he suffered after being allegedly headbutted by teammate Dani Osvaldo.

The defender sustained the injury following an incident at the training ground earlier this week, with Italian international Osvaldo having been suspended by the club for a fortnight.

Fonte added a message with the picture, which said: "Appreciate everyone's concern and support but it takes a lot more then a bruised eye to stop me! Ready for tomorrow COYS"

Yeah nothing is it, getting head butted by a work mate, really helps team spirit. You should run motivational courses….

On a more serious note the fact that Jose Fonte has chosen to publicly show his "injuries" (with the Club's blessing one must assume) suggests to me that the Club wish to keep this episode in the public arena - if so for what reason? All reasonable offers considered possibly?

Unreal and there was me thinking he had really been hurt by Jack Sparrow, the way the press have been going over the top about a spat on the training ground - umm I wonder what sparked such a vicious reaction from Captain Jack !!! I still can't believe how this has been blown out of all proportion by all concerned - it is almost a black eye!!! I see DE describe it as a "black eye" yet Jose describes it as a "bruised eye" oh how the press like to sensationalise! COYS

I thought a black eye was a bruised eye. is the term black eye on the politically correct hit list, like blackboard was?
not that it maters, Dani shouldn't have done what he did and Jose obviously isn't happy about it. what happens next is down to Dani, Jose, the other players, staff, MP and the club. they may not be able to get past it, in which case Dani will probably go. or they may be able to sort it out, in which case Dani will stay do his punishment say sorry (hopefully publicly) and that will be the end of it.
I jst wish people would stop slating Dani as if they know him, you cant say that he needs psychotherapy unless you have analysed him professionally.
there are also people comparing him to suarez, saying suarez has preformed on the pitch so his past is ok. you cant compare their on pitch performances because of the vast difference in valuations Dani might have been a big expensive signing for us but at £14mill he is no where near suarez, who could go £90mill+. also suarez is a racist who has bitten another player during a game ffs. let the club sort it out and if he stays then support him, turning him into the next guly, fox, hoover or gaston isn't going to help anyone, why is it that we have so many players who certain fans think its ok to slate? why is it that certain fans think its ok to viciously attack players who don't play up to their standards? I think it says more about those fans than the players!

Steady, Seed, I see your point but all Chriops is commenting on is the injury, how the DE has reported it and the action (taxi for Dani etc.) that many on here believe the club must take, which they have based largely on what they have read in these reports.

I don't think anyone is saying this isn't a serious matter (the club's action has been clear). It's just a case of balance. By running countless over-sensationalised threads on it, mostly based on hearsay, the DE has given its readers the impression that the injury is much worse than this picture would suggest.

As for team spirit, that's another matter - and an important one. The good news is that we have characters at the club (Kelv, Adam, Rickie, MP .....) who will know whether or not Dani's inclusion/exclusion will have any long-term impact on it and, thus, how to take things forward for the good of the Club.

Dani Osvaldo deserves the sack, he was at work and lost his composure and respect to a working colleague in front of the Manager, his Staff and the first Team squad and new additions of young promising Players who he should be a role model to but they would not be impressed and there isn't any excuse, he has broken away from the bond that has existed throughout the Team for many seasons especially since Mauricio Potchettino arrived it's been fantastic, whether he wants to leave and this is his cunning way of forcing the Club to let him leave we will never know.

When pro Players train they have to hold back in tackles on there Team mates for obvious reason but if it isn't timed correctly it would never be with intent and many times a Player gets hurt in training and has to miss the next game.

What must be remembered is the black eye might look like a Bee sting and Fonte shouldn't be expected to make a big fuss and he isn't but it could of been very serious with damage to his eye for life, it's not funny and Osvaldo deserves to be punished and be humble and show his remorse and apologise to all those connected to the Club, whether he will be forgiven and retained no doubt we will soon know

Well he might have a chance of becoming a good team member if he actually played for the team. I really can't see why people are trying to defend him. We don't know the full story but the club and players do. He's now out for another 2 weeks following directly on from his ban for getting involved in something else he should have been nowhere near. Extreme unprofessionalism at best. Time to cut our losses and get someone in who gives 100% and who knows how to behave.

Hernandez would be good but he's probably on double what we would pay. Due to the club's stance on the transfer window it would seem extremely unlikely that any players will move in either direction. That's with the exception of the fringe players who we need to get all or some of their wages off the wage bill.

He punched Lamela in the face at Roma for not passing to him..... He's just served a three match ban for getting involved with the Newcastle bench now he's serving a further two match ban for assaulting a team mate. Dress it up how you want but his track record speaks for itself. He's a loose canon and it's costing us.

Yeah that is true but if we were to sell osvaldo in this window if he is not good for the dressing room then that kind of player would be a good replacement, I just hope poch stays for next year, still need a cb, and an attacking threat before we can challenge top 6,

I agree. There are growing rumours that we are looking to get rid. Trouble is he's on very good money so will be interesting to see if anybody wants to pay a biggish transfer fee, big wages and most importantly take a risk on his character. We would also need some kind of a replacement.

Suppose we could sell him as he is good with his head but not when there is a ball in the air.

The other thread on here is that the team are furious with his action. So we can surmise from that that he will have to do a lot to get back in favour.

I still find it difficult to understand why some are saying he will come good and all that. I reckon he has really queried his own pitch and he will be a very lucky chap to win the team round. Newcastle started it and now this. I assume you don't get paid when suspended, though this probably does not worry these guys very much.

So justify all you like but you must recognise this is a very sad episode and I cannot remember anything like it happening ever before.

For me on a happier note, Barnard has gone back to help his old club and my home town Southend until the end of the season. I am sure he will welcome this as The Blues are coming strong and have a great promotion chance under Phil Brown.

Up the Saints - forever!!

Yeah nothing is it, getting head butted by a work mate, really helps team spirit. You should run motivational courses….
He punched Lamela in the face at Roma for not passing to him..... He's just served a three match ban for getting involved with the Newcastle bench now he's serving a further two match ban for assaulting a team mate. Dress it up how you want but his track record speaks for itself. He's a loose canon and it's costing us.
Well said seed. Have we really got to wait with baited breath wondering when or if he is going to explode again and really hurt another player ??. Jose was lucky this time, a head but can cause a lot of damage , broken bones and eye sockets causing lost services on the playing field. Powder keg waiting for the next spark. If you was the owner would you take the risk?? . I would'nt , he would be getting his P45 and bags packed. Maybe a one man board does'nt work as well as we all thought and Katharina has made sure in future the board will consist of more than one wise head.

I'm not dressing anything up, I'm simply trying to stick with the FACTS as we know them. On the contrary, it's the DE that is dressing things up through its misuse of English. I'm not someone who regularly bashes the DE, but its articles on this issue are scandalously short on fact and high on speculation.

I've consistently ventured the opinion that I'm happy to put my faith in whatever action the club takes. To be consistent with that, I've not allowed myself to be swayed by sensational headlines and phrases such as 'as far as we understand, blah, blah, blah' and 'according to reports, blah, blah, blah'.

As I understand Chriops's original post, there was no suggestion that Dani hadn't wronged or that he shouldn't be punished in whatever way the club deems appropriate. All that was being said was that the DE reports and some of the subsequent comments have given a rather different impression (of Jose's injuries) than this picture suggests.

That's the issue here, beneath the reality of an action deemed serious enough for the club to suspend Dani for two weeks, we know very little, especially about how the club will resolve this. Using sensational language to draw people towards a hatred of a player who, as far as we know, might yet have a long career at Saints, is pretty shameful journalism.

If Dani gets sold, so be it, if the club resolves things internally believing it's in the club's best long-term interests for him to stay, that's fine by me. Others will clearly find it harder to support him (and with it the team) if/when he does again wear a Saints' shirt.

Frankly, I'm fed up with this story now. I'm more interested in tomorrow's match and, in relation to all this, Jose's health. It's great news that he's declared himself fit for tomorrow. He's a model pro and an example we could all learn something from.

the big difference though osprey is that this happened during a game and therefore came under the local FA`s authority. Saints can only suspend Dani for two weeks and give him a two week fine, that's all the PFA will allow.
even if he had done it in a prem game to an opponent dani would have only have been given a 5 game ban, or around that. suarez got 10 games for biting during a game, despite having previously bitten another player and already serving an 8 game ban for racism. paul davis got a 9 game ban for walking up to glenn cockerill punching him from behind and breaking his jaw. Cantona was given a 9 month ban for attacking a fan. the FA have no balls and should have banned cantona for life, he should also have served the prison sentence he was originally given, and suarez for a year.

mirror reporting that manure have bid £22.5mill for luke. will be interesting to see what happens. my bet is that he isn't going anywhere. why would luke want to go to manure anyway? he would be in a back four with jones and smalling! I`d take dejan and fonte over them any day. several manure players have already said that this is their last season there, inc. vidic who is set to leave on a free.
reading some comments from manure fans they think that because they want him he will go and he will learn so much more there. manure`s name isn`t what it used to be and players want champions league over big name clubs nowadays anyway. if manure don't get any European football they will find it harder to sign more top quality players or keep what the have got. their midfield and defence are already poor and take rooney and Hernandez away from the front line and its putting a lot of pressure on an always injured van persie. mata isn't enough to save them! manure are going to go the way that Liverpool did in the 90`s, and we will take their place. so why would luke go?

We have only heard one side of this story but many on here are ready to hang Dani. While I agree Dani should not have lashed out I feel that Jose must have said or done something to make his team mate react this way. I do remember reading somewhere that it was a dangerous sliding tackle from Jose. They should both have been punished all this in fighting is doing the club no good at all. Since Nicola left the team seem to be in melt down. One thing is for sure the press would not be writing all this garbage if he was still here. I don't think we the fans would ever have got to hear about this at all.

Was this an unprovoked attack and if it was then get rid, or was it a case of a defender knowing how to get at an opposing forward during a match with the verbals, and a very hard tackle, maybe too hard for a training match?
Was Fonte blameless, until all the facts are known, of which we don't have, then we have to trust the club to deal with it.

I see my comment has got some stick. As per normal, anyone with an original opinion is branded a skate.

I'm a Saints season ticket holder. My Dad was a Saints ST holder, and was my Grandad. My first Saints game was in 1976.
Today I'll be sitting in Block 9 row B with my disabled wife.

My point regarding the Fonte picture, is that various reports in the Media and on social forums make the incident sound like a bloodbath! There was even talk of Dani taking a sword into training for God sake!

Following the incident, there was also talk that the Saints team refuse to have anything to do with Dani anymore... Sheesh! What is worse is that fans believe it as gospel, not the rumour it is!

I played Semi Pro football. Clashes between players happen all the time. You have a punch-up, then go for a beer together afterwards. These things happen, they always have, and they always will. Dani may have gone a little over the top, but it won't be without any provocation.

These days all I am hearing is negative talk, since the Don left.
It seems that all Saints fans are doing is being negative about the team and players, with story after story that they are biting at...

If this had been anyone else at the club, it would have barely made the press. Since it's Dani, it becomes a story, with references to past incidents and his bad-boy image.

COYS
why are you surprised at the press sensationalising something?
How can you sensationalise a footballer head butting a team mate? I’m sure Jose would like to apologise to some disappointed fans for not being more seriously injured! We need to get rid of Osvaldo and quick.

That's my point he didn't HAVE to say anything! I think you are a bit naïve if you don't believe stuff like this happens around different football clubs all the time. And in answer to your question he's a centre back - he could have quite easily said he did it in training and nobody would have batted an eyelid. I think there is clearly an agenda from the club to get rid of Dani

They don't need an agenda, if they chose to sell him then he goes, its quite simple!

I'm glad Jose didn't lie because with the amount of witnesses - the whole squad, coaching staff and any other onlookers - it was bound to have come out and that would have led to Jose losing the trust of the fans.

I think if Dani seeks professional help we should support him. He clearly has some issues, but we signed him knowing about his 'hot head' so surely we should try to be the club that helps him not ridicule him for being the player we knew he was.

Call him a pirate as much as you like, he is an amazing player given the right support could set our stadium on fire (in football terms).

Give him the correct punishment but also the chance to do good if he shows willing.
