Saints have refused to rule out ditching Dani Osvaldo before the transfer window closes on Friday night.

The Italian striker is currently serving a two week club suspension after allegedly headbutting teammate Jose Fonte.

The Daily Echo understands that the current attitude towards Osvaldo from his colleagues will make it very tough for him to make an instant return to the first team after serving his ban.

As a result Saints may look to offload Osvaldo, probably back to Italy, before the end of the week.

Saints are not likely to want to take a big cut on the initial fee of nearly £13m they paid for Osvaldo last August when they tied up a deal with Roma to make the striker their record signing.

At this late notice it would also need a very quick turn of events for a club to tie up a permanent deal.

As such, Saints may seek to loan him out for the remainder of the campaign.

That gives both parties plenty of breathing space, and with Osvaldo set to lead the line for Italy in this summer’s World Cup could even increase his value if he does well.

With Mauricio Pochettino handing over press duties to assistant Jesus Perez for cup matches, it was up to the assistant manager to field the questions on Osvaldo after the Yeovil FA Cup win.

There wasn’t much Perez could say about the situation but he didn’t close the door on a possible move for Osvaldo.

“Let me comment only on the statement that the club made after the situation. I can’t talk anything more about this situation,” he said.

“We will see in the next days what happens.

“The statement was clear and nothing more is coming from me.”

He added: “The transfer market is still open until the next week so it’s not my responsibility to talk abou. We will see in the next days what will happen.”

If Saints do opt to offload Osvaldo then they might seek to recruit another striker.

The Daily Echo understands that before his departure Nicola Cortese had been very close to agreeing a deal to sell Rickie Lambert to West Ham.

However, that now looks well and truly off the table with Lambert the club’s main striking option in the absence of Osvaldo.

Though the likes of Jay Rodriguez and Guly do Prado can play there, they are viewed by Pochettino as more effective in deeper roles.

That leaves only 18-year-old Sam Gallagher as a rival for Lambert.

As such, if Osvaldo will not be reintegrated into the dressing room, Saints are likely to have to abandon their plans not to sign anybody this month and bring in another front man.

When asked whether he would bet on any transfer activity at St Mary’s before the end of the week, Perez smiled: “I don’t like to bet.”

Get him some anger management counselling more like! Playing him against Arsenal would be just plain crazy and he's suspended anyway.

Yes.

I am glad the Echo is there to give us a forum and some Saints stuff to read, but their continuing use of misleading headlines is intensely annoying, very frustrating, and p-poor journalism. This headline could just as easily have been "Saints refuse to rule out possibility of Elvis being alive and living on the moon"; it would have been just as factual, and about as relevant.

Pointing out where the Echo makes mistakes is not about attacking them as about offering them the opportunity to improve in areas where they are desperately underperforming.

Some people may be DE haters, but I'm not. However, its whole handling of this story has been awful. Far too many lines such as 'it is understood that .....' 'apparently .....' and so forth.

Is it too much to ask that it runs stories that inform rather than mislead?

What rules, player power or common sense. Saints would be mad to get rid of a player of Dani's class. Give him anger management ,make him grovel for forgiveness to the other players but don't get rid of him. If we have ambitions to be a top side we need top players and all that comes with them. Suarez a good example. If Liverpool had got rid of him where would they be now!

We can see he's a good player but he has history and has already had 2 incidents in his short time here that have affected the team. He's hardly Suarez so I wouldn't be gutted if saints did offload him and look elsewhere. The boy has talent but has yet to show anything other than the odd magic moment. It's getting late in the window to let him leave now tho, so I hope they will bank on him coming good in the games we have left this season.

Dani Suarez. If Dani had as much impact for Saints that Suarez does for Liverpool we'd be gagging for him to stay. I'd say there's hardly anything between our performance when he's in the team or not.

I'm never one for conspiracy theories, but I've cooked up a good one.

The players new that NC was close to selling SRL to wet spam. SRL didn't want to go and the players weren't happy about it. SRL is very popular with the other players whilst Dani hasn't even tried to integrate. The players deliberately set out to wind Dani up, knowing he had a short fuse and would react badly. The club then has to deal with Dani, which has halted any deal with SRL.

Lets keep it going on other sites and see how long it takes for the DE or nationals to get hold of it.
I have based this on nothing but my own imagination, but If we don't laugh about it, it will start to get very annoying.

Comparing Dani to Saurez is ridiculous, SFC need to weigh up the facts, what has he done for us so far? How much of a liability has he been so far? How is he effecting the team and players around him?
I would say that the balance is extremely negative and Dani should be on his way. As the used to say in shcool "theres no 'I' in team".
Dani can't be a world class player because he's got issues, he needs help to sort those out first, somewhere along the line someone will need to make him wake up and realise, MP said that he would do that, but unfortunately it looks as though this was a mistake. I still think RL is a better forward anyway, although I thought RL was better than Carroll aswell but Roy didn't seem to agree, so I maybe wrong...:)

The lights are on,but nobodies in.....the car`s driving but nobody is behind the wheel ask any Roma fans..Saints would bite anybodies hand off for 8-10 million return

I read that Wet Spam are interested in signing Dani...would rather he went there then Rickie but a move back to Italy on loan could be better suited and could increase hi value if we were to cash in after the world cup. Think we would need another striker. On another note I see Luke Shaw again being linked with a move away. I hope he stays and I hope he wants to stay, we want players who want to play here for us and we no longer need to be a selling club. Lets get through the transfer window and maybe a signing of a centre back would be good. How about a loan deal fro Micah Richards or Thomas Vermallen??

Really he's the best striker that we have ! You wrong Jay Rodriguez is the best striker that we have. He's the only striker with pace that can past Koscielny and Mertesacker. Lambert and Osvaldo will be only good in dead ball situation vs Arsenal. Just because he score one of the best goal of the season so far doesn't mean he's a very good striker only time will tell. I believe Saint got rob by AS Roma paying 15 million for that guy ! We coulda have Loic Remy who he's loan in Newcastle for 11 or 12 million from QPR and he create chances and keep scoring 11 goals so far not bad Osvaldo 3 goals !

Lets keep it going on other sites and see how long it takes for the DE or nationals to get hold of it.
I have based this on nothing but my own imagination, but If we don't laugh about it, it will start to get very annoying.

if I can step away from the `Osvaldo incident` for a moment.

watching sky sports news this morning they had I sports reporter in commenting on the papers. he highlighted a story about manure and chelskis attempts to buy luke. he actually said that they were in `a race to buy shaw` and it will be very interesting nearer the end of the week with the window shutting. to suggest there was `a race` for luke is suggesting that there is a finishing line, i.e. him being sold. the press have been told by KL and MP that we are not selling any players this window. to go back on this would be a huge back down by both, would make them look weak and would be a massive slap in the face to us, the fans.
if the club were to sell Dani (getting back on story for just a moment) I think that would be understood by all parties as a one off due to exceptional circumstances, and would be accepted as the best outcome for everyone concerned.
if clubs are letting it be known, via the press, that they want luke and what sort of deals they might offer, i.e. wages and guarantees of first team starts. is this not a form, although indirect, of `tapping a player up`?

I think the Echo actually fired your imagination with their comment that big Sam might be SRL's only rival now. I will add to your theory by reminding the Echo that a similar thing happened at the beginning of last season with the sudden loaning out of Billy .

No football management team would keep a player just because he's popular with the team or the fans. Likewise they wouldn't dump a player if he's unpopular. If said player was outstanding in his form, relability etc he would stay regardless. Sadly Osvaldo is none of these and he is deeply not the flavour of the month. Before this incident I defended him and said we would probably see the best of him next season. This incident changes all that. He is not an outstanding player and Saints are now an above midtable quality team and we should be looking to stay loyal with our players who are likely to move into the top 6 not treadwater at midtable. If this player was already in that category I might be in his corner for him but he is not a hot headed 18 year old, he's a loose cannon 28 year old - No anger management course is going to change him - he doesn't need to change badly enough. I used to run anger management courses and I suspect this man doesn't need to change so he won't. Get rid of him on loan or otherwise and bring in a younger, more stable individual who will relish the chance Saints are giving him and not disappoint. We may already have one in Sam - time will tell. We've missed out on Ince which I feel is a great shame as we needed a speedy winger but there are strikers out there who can do the job and are still young enough to improve and play the Saints way (Ings springs to mind,) There - got that off my chest (part of an anger management strategy) No need to kick the cat now!

As much as being a punishment for Dani, this 2 week ban is also opportunity for the team to cool down their anger at the situation. Some folks seem to suffer from the same impulsive rush to react as Dani.
Let's not forget how people were wanting Boruc out after the bottle incident and now he has pulled through we could hardly imagine the squad without him.
I say give Dani the same opportunity and he will rise to the occasion and the club as a whole will benefit.

True and I'm not calling for him to be gone, but the two incidents are not of equal weight. The fan receiving the bottle did not get a bloody nose and doesn't have to work with him.

I like the idea of Mich Richards, he looked very good before City left him to rot on the bench. His prefered possition is CB.... I think its a gd idea but i can imagen he is on a very high salery at Man City maybe too high. Not Sure about Vermaelen not seen him play much. We deffinatley need somone tho, i think a loan would be the best move until we can buy properly in the summer. Has Lovren got a brother?
I'd prefer to see them nurse the youngsters through as they have and give Maya another crack at a run in the team as I've not totally given up on him.

Both Richards and Vermaelen are far too injury prone IMO and we don't generally do loans unless they are progressive moves with a view to a permanent signing.

We have an Italian international player on our books, we have 4 days left of the transfer window, we have a game on Tuesday night so MoPo is busy sorting that out, We don't have NC any more to deal with transfers (although I'm sure there is someone at the Club who can) We don't have anyone of Dani's calibre in our fantastic academy. So for me we need him.

Yes he's upset the apple cart and the players, as professional footballers the players will play who the manager selects, because they have too, I believe this sort of thing happens at a football Club at every level, you don't need to best mates to play along someone, Dani should apologise to Jose, and everyone else at the Club, including the fans (if need be) and return to the fold asap, yes with his wings clipped and after a large helping of humble pie.

Dani wants to lead the line for Italy in Brazil so needs to play. We need him to play for the rest of the season at least, if it doesn't workout for him the players by the summer then dive him out, you never know if he goes to Brazil and becomes the leading scorer in the tournament his value would increase an extra couple of million, so for me to sell him now makes no sense at all especially at a loss, simply because he's a bad boy, we knew what he was when we signed him.

Let's hope common sense prevails and all of this nasty affair can be forgotten so the can moved forward Together As One

Sam has barely played for the first team, and you're trying to put our hopes on him against Arsenal - lol, no pressure then!

Give the lad time. His development needs to be handled carefully, otherwise he could end up going backwards, or ruining him permanently. While we have kids of a similar age in our team, each kid develops differently. So far Sam has done very well, but he's a long way from being able to rely on him, and we shouldn't put too much pressure on him.

As for the Echo's non story based on supposition and conjecture. Can it be called news? A long way from fact, but perhaps we are being too harsh. After all, comics are supposed to be entertaining.

Whatever happens with Dani will be for the best of the club. In his time I'd suggest that Surez has done far worse. Have any of our fans gone so far as to burn their Osvaldo shirts yet?

@jls217 . . . . . . . I obviously respect that you ran anger management courses, but nobody, including your good self, knows if Dani Osvaldo WANTS to seek such professional help. The fact is, it is not too late for him to be helped IF HE WANTS IT. Nobody else can make a smoker pack up smoking because it has to be the smoker's own wish. Similarly, it must be Dani's own decision to seek help. Anger management counselling helps those who WANT to be helped. It has crossed my mind that Dani might by now be sick of his own temper and will want to do something about it! It is never too late for someone who genuinely wants to improve! Perhaps his two week suspension will have him thinking deeply enough to realise he has to change himself for the better in order to save his career in football, not just his career with Saints. He is right now at by far the most important crossroads in his life, with not only his Saints career, but also his career as an Italy international and his last opportunity to play in the World Cup finals all very much at stake.
REHABILITATION is Dani Osvaldo's last chance!

MoPo in his press conference today sounded a lot more confident about new signings happening than he did a couple of weeks ago. I can only assume this incident has brought things to a head in that department.

Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if Katharina wants to herald our new era with a bit of a bang.

if the club were to sell Dani (getting back on story for just a moment) I think that would be understood by all parties as a one off due to exceptional circumstances, and would be accepted as the best outcome for everyone concerned.
if clubs are letting it be known, via the press, that they want luke and what sort of deals they might offer, i.e. wages and guarantees of first team starts. is this not a form, although indirect, of `tapping a player up`?
Thats how it works, the rumour gets into the media, they have a frenzy and clutch at some straws. They're main aim is too unsettle the players

Correct they have publicly announced that no players are for sale, as we all know its very difficult to keep players that want to move on, thats the point of the inflated offers and media frenzy, plant a seed in the young players head and let it grow. Luke is a very talented young man and he was always bound to attract the attention of the big clubs, he knows that SFC don't want to sell him and would most definately turn down any offers but as with most contracts if they trigger a certain clause, if there is one, they would be able to talk to Luke directly and try and persuade him.
Ultimately its down too Luke, the club has made its stance very clear.

As i said a rookie Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick in on his debut against Arsenal in a famous Saints win. There was pressure on him but he rose to the occasion. If Lambert is injured and Sam plays then why shouldn't he get a goal or three.IN 35 minutes against Yeovil he took his goal well and could have had another couple if the fates were smiling graciously on him.
We all know that he is a long way from the finished article but if called upon to start I will be rooaring on him to do a Shearer.Ok possible rather than probable but at the end of the day the enthusiasm of youth may strike lucky for the Saints. If POCH doesn't think he is ready then he wont play him.If he does start cheer him to the rooftops. However good, bad or indifferent he plays he will give 100 per cent plus for the shirt unlike the despicable bully/coward Osvaldo.I for one want no more argy bargy from that overpaid spoilt brat..

I don't understand all the complaining about the DE's Osvaldo story. He's our record signing and he could very well be on his way out after a matter of months, that's big news! Would you rather read Gordon Watson's take on something. And I don't think some fans have grasped the fact that he could quite possibly the last of the big money signings. I've got the feeling that unless we finish top seven, KL won't green light any more £15 mill signings. Who knows if her and NC clashed on transfer kitty in the summer. Osvaldo being hesitant to join us in the summer was probably a sign that his attitude stinks, shame as he some talent.

@jls217 . . . . . .
No great argument from me but I would suggest he has had ample opportunity to address this recurring behavioural problem and has chose to plough on regardless. Addressing the issue is the only chance he has. I would rather he did not have it at Saints as the risk is just too great. I would still prefer to give another youngster, deserving of a chance, the opportunity to wear the shirt of my club. This man is finished in my eyes - you and others are, naturally entitled to your opinions and the right to air them. Does he want that shirt badly enough? scant evidence of it so far.
