Saints' form delights Poch

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is delighted that Saints are hitting form again after coming through the other side of their injury nightmares.

Saints endured a miserable run of injuries and suspensions as their early season form fell apart with just one win in nine league games rooting them into upper midtable.

Since they have got players back they have steadily improved and are now only missing Gaston Ramirez and Dejan Lovren from their squad.

Results have followed, with a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

The latest victory came away to Fulham as Saints scored three times in 11 second half minutes to blow away their opponents and leave them bottom of the Premier League table.

“I think in that period we had quite a few injuries and players banned,” said Pochettino of the club’s previous poor run.

“We are a very young team and don’t have that many players within the team because that’s how we want it.

“In a competition that’s already months old it’s normal that you will have ups and downs.

“We haven’t forgotten the philosophy or the style of football we want to play, even if there have been ups and downs in that time, and that’s been very important for us.”

Saints were indebted to goalkeeper Artur Boruc for making a couple of excellent first half saves to ensure they went into the break level, but there was nothing Fulham could do to stop an onslaught in the second period.

“I think in the first half we were a bit mistaken about our set-up,” admitted Pochettino.

“We knew Fulham were going to be defending deep and would be wanting to close down the spaces for us and that they were going to be trying to go on the counter attack. In the second half we corrected certain positions such as Rickie, Adam and Jay’s positions on the pitch and allowed us to get the goal that opened up the game for us and control the game overall.”

The game also saw a 100th Saints league goal for Rickie Lambert, and Pochettino commented: “I think that Rickie for Southampton is a great player, a vital player, a very important player for Southampton.

“What I know is that when Rickie arrived in League One with Southampton he had never played in the Premier League or the Championship.

“I think that Rickie Lambert is very important for Southampton and Southampton is also very important for Rickie Lambert.”

Sunderland are buzzing we will do well to get them back to St Marys for a replay. We will need Wanyama on song for that game or we could lose.

Well, we didn't so well against them when they weren't buzzing, so maybe this buzzing is a good omen.

I think the last few months show why you really should pay little or no attention to what the pundits and media tell you.

Yep, we had an injury crisis, but everyone talks about our lack of form, our slump and how we are now playing much better again.

While this is true to an extent, what people totally fail to look at is our incredibly tough run of fixtures during that period: Arsenal away, Man City home, Everton away, Spurs home, Chelsea home and away .

They do the same with Arsenal - they are world beaters when they play a few easy games in a row and then hopeless as soon as they play the top teams (as you'll see when they hit their nightmare run of fixtures in Feb and particularly March).

Fact is that we are a very good team and have been all season. Even during that hard period we performed pretty well in the circumstances.

In my opinion, we are probably three or four positions below our rightful place because nobody can tell me that Spurs, Newcastle. Man Utd or probably Everton have been more impressive than us and everyone below us is massively inferior.

Only difference is they've won games they should have lost and we've done the opposite.

If we give Sunderland the same space the Geordies gave them, Saturday, then yes we will struggle to put them away.
But if we play in the same manner, as we did for the first half, when last up there, only this time take our chances, then we will be in the next round.

Also, if Man City maintain their usual high standards, at the Etihad, then Sunderland will be going into this game on the back of a good hiding.

You are right. There aren't many games this season when we have played badly. Can't think of any actually. Mind you we have been really lucky that nearly every team we've come up against and hammered have had one of their worst games of the season. Wonder what the odds of that happening are.

Agreed. The only team who outplayed us this year was Chelsea - twice. And even then only in the last half hour - both times.

The best thing to do is to report them (using the REPORT THIS POST button). The DE are very quick to get rid of them once they have been informed about the problem.

I have reported this imposter and did the same last year, I'm surprised this has happened again, if you remember there were a few last year goodness knows how this one slipped the net, what it does prove is our comments are in the USA with the advert mentioning Dollars, anyway we don't want them, never want to see them and hope the Editor can be more aware of this rubbish and stop them before they get this far
