Fulham boss's big challenge

Daily Echo: Rene Meulensteen Rene Meulensteen

Fulham head coach Rene Meulensteen admits keeping the club in the Barclays Premier League will be his biggest ever challenge in football.

Southampton were the latest side to take all three points from Craven Cottage as their trio of England World Cup hopefuls put Fulham to the sword in the second half, with England manager Roy Hodgson in attendance.

Adam Lallana, once again the best player on the pitch, opened the scoring with a great finish before Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez got in on the act.

The defeat leaves Fulham bottom of the table and, despite a busy transfer deadline day, which included the club-record signing of Greek striker Konstantinos Mitroglou, Meulensteen, pictured above, feels keeping the team in the top flight would be his greatest achievement to date.

“It is the biggest challenge I have ever faced in regards to being in football,” he said.

“I think it is the biggest challenge Fulham Football Club has faced for many, many years. We cannot afford to lay down and feel sorry for ourselves and beat ourselves up about it.”

The heavy defeat was made worse for Fulham with fellow strugglers West Ham, Cardiff and Sunderland all picking up victories, but Meulensteen was keen to remain focused solely on his own side’s fortunes.

“It is very hard, but we can’t rely on other teams,” he added.

“It is all about yourself – you can’t look at others you have to look at yourselves and see what we can address.”

We don't write this sort of thing - I was very impressed with the Fulham crowd and their respect for Saints style of play - we do not need to say such rubbish.

With so many teams bunched together at the bottom end, this is going to be a real battle right to the end. I'm just so relieved that we are clear of it and will be able to enjoy it all unfold.

What would be really nice is Manure needing to beat us to get 4th place in the last game of the season - and us beating them and giving them a Keane-style thumbs down.

I agree, the shouting is annoying as it is, but others seem to think it's clever so I tolerate it, but abuse is against the site rules, no need for it, Rene Meulensteen isn't a bad manager, he just hasn't had anything to work with, not sure the other new signings will be any good, but we have got our full points from them so if they harm anyone else that can only be good for us, so good luck to them.

Well to be fair they probably had to get their biggest wage earner off the books. I mean DC was on over £200 a week

Well if the Fulham manger thinks hes got it bad he can always console himself that hes not at poopey.
`boos rang out at the final whistle as Pompey saw themselves dragged back into serious relegation trouble as their dreadful form at Fratton Park continued with a seventh League Two loss on home turf of the campaign.` taken from the fews!
So the bestest best best bestest bestest best tm fans in the world, who never boo their own team, yet again boo their own team.
Still at least they've got some nice shiny things in the trophy cabinet to keep them happy!
We'll just have to just concentrate on getting as high up the prem as we can whilst enjoying a cup run.

Anyone who would turn their own mother would certainly turn on their team. Perhaps they can sell their five trophies for scrap to support the best fan-owned club in the world.
