LIBERAL Democrat Martin Kyrle announces his withdrawal from the field after 50 years of writing letters to the Daily Echo (In My View, January 29).

But even in signing off he can’t shake off the self-righteousness and misplaced moral superiority which are core tenets of his collapsing party. And this, remember, when the Liberals are once more engulfed in scandal.

The contributions of others (described as idiots) are loftily dismissed as outrageous ace-grinding in need of correction, where they are not actually required to be spiked because they do not accord with his own views.

That attitude betrays an intolerant mindset and a complete disconnect from the words Liberal and Democratic.

Nevertheless, for all that, I wish Mr Kyrle a long and happy retirement.
