Poch revels in 'excellent' year

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is revelling in an ‘excellent 2014’ for his side as they made it back-to-back away wins to climb to eighth in the table.

Jose Fonte’s goal saw Saints collect another three points on the road, this time a 1-0 victory at Hull.

It followed up nicely on their 3-0 romp at Fulham on their last outing away from St Mary’s and also made it eight matches unbeaten in all competitions, including six in the Premier League.

The only game they have lost in 2014 came on New Year’s Day as they were beaten by Chelsea, who are now top the table, at Stamford Bridge.

A delighted Pochettino said: “We are having a 2014 that is excellent.

“We are having great performances, the team is playing very well and overall we are very happy with the performances of the team as of late.

“I want again to congratulate the players because we have a short squad, not that many players in the squad.

“We also have a lot of young players who are still learning and in light of that we are playing very well and we are very happy about that.”

The result saw Saints leapfrog Newcastle into eighth place in the Premier League table.

The Magpies play this evening, as do Manchester United who are now in Saints’ sights.

David Moyes’ side are in seventh just two points ahead of Pochettino’s men, who now have an FA Cup fifth round tie at Sunderland to contend with before they return to league action with another away game, this time at West Ham.

“I think the victory is fully deserved on a very tough pitch against very tough opposition,” said Pochettino of the win over Hull.

“We were fully superior to Hull, a team that has invested quite a bit during the transfer window, and I think overall with the performance of the team we fully deserved to get the three points.”

Yes solid season and good 2014, but imagine where we would be if all those draws we had became wins like tonight, Stoke (x2) Arsenal, City, Newcastle, Sunderland (×2), all games we dominated in large spells but didn't finish off, arguably only man utd away was the only draw we were lucky to get. Build on that and we really would be flying high..

Now for Sunderland Saints "and with a decent sqaud this time" we can go all the way in the F A Cup, as it looks as if our place in the prem league is now secure, we're in the best position than we have been in for years so it would be nice to take this trophy serious. COYR

Its been a fantastic season now, whatever happens, and we are probably only the lack of a predatory, lethal, cli
nical striker, and the missing out on signing Coutinho, away from it having been a mega season.

Hmm not so sure, I think Garston in the Liverpool team would look just as good, I just not sure our style of play suits a purely luxury midfielder, they have to be good going the other way. (And I don't mean in a Ken Monkou kinda way)

Well,we will never know, but its only a luxury if it doesn't work, and so far the combination is working for Liverpool.

Slugger, I have been a Saints fan for 65+ years, and over that topsy turvy time one thing I have learnt is that we are never safe until it is mathematically impossible to be relegated. Call me a miserable old pessimist if you like, but ……!!

Realistically, of course, we are safe now and flying high. In all honesty i have to say this is one of the most enjoyable seasons I have ever experienced as a Southampton supporter. Long may it continue.

This was the sort of game we would have lost in the past, so great credit to the team and coaching staff, things are looking up for the rest of this season and the next. Its been a long painful journey but we are now almost back to where we were, 7th, when Hoddle left us for Spurs.

Despite some of the off-field dramas this season it really has been a great one so far. Not only the results but also the way we have played and dominated posession. A bit more clinical finishing and a few less mistakes at the back and we really would have been challenging top 6 however look at where we have come from, it has been an awesome journey. I think MoPo and our youngsters are key to all that has been good this season and I guess the challenge in the summer is keeping them all here. If we can retain the strong core of the team then they will only grow and develop as players and as a team and with that success for many years is sure to follow. Lets keep going and finish above Man Utd!!

Excellent year so far.

One cloud on the horizon though-we need to get Fonte and Cork on long term contracts ASAP. Not sure why this hasn't been done yet as these two are key members of our squad and they are both down to one year in June.

Our hit rate on big name transfers in is not great and we have made some very costly mistakes so why not back what are two very good proven PL players who know and love the club and offer the solidity we need to move forward. We should continue to progress around a solid base of Saints players as bringing in highly paid outsiders, untried in this league or at our club is precarious at best.

I still see little wrong with of our previous policy of buying good young players who have excelled at Championship level ( e.g Clyne and JayRod)-perhaps Thomas Ince and Ings?? ...and absolutely no-one with a pony tail or Alice band....!!
