Saints about more than one player

Saints continue to prove they will always be about more than one player according to Mauricio Pochettino.

Saints hit the headlines last month after Dani Osvaldo’s alleged headbutt on teammate Jose Fonte that led to the club record signing being shipped out.

Fonte has reacted with incredible professionalism, leading the team in the centre of defence in Dejan Lovren’s absence and scoring goals against Arsenal and the winner at Hull last night.

Pochettino has often spoken about the togetherness of his group of players being vital for not only the way they play but also getting Premier League results, and this incident has surely only underlined that still further.

“It’s completely forgotten. It’s in the past. We can only look forward right now,” said Pochettino of the Osvaldo indecent.

“I’ve always said that the group mentality is the most important thing, that the team is the most important thing and that there is no player above the team mentality.

“I am always going to defend that point of view – that the team is the most important thing and not a single player.”

He added: “We are always going to defend the common interest and the common good of this group and that is never going to change.

“We are always going to defend that and what’s best for the group and not a single player.”

Saints had to show plenty of desire and determination to win on the road again at the KC Stadium.

As a few early chances came and went in a game in which Saints were always superior, they could have been excused for feeling it just wasn’t going to be their day.

However, they kept on plugging away and eventually got their reward when Fonte bagged what proved to be the winner as goalline technology showed his shot crossed the line before Rickie Lambert slammed it home.

“We always had the hope, we were always hoping we were going to score,” admitted Pochettino.

“I think we showed the capacity to show the patience to look for the goal and in the end we actually produced it.

“We kept on searching for the goal and overall we played how we always play and I think the goal was fully deserved, and the victory as well.”

There is a "me" in team, though, so be careful!

So proud of the team and all the fans who made the trip up to Hull - you were immense! We're only the 4th side to win at Hull this season. I'm gutted that Corky's pile driver smashed against the woodwork at the end because I'd love to see him bag a goal for his efforts. I only hope that MoPo feels tied to this club now for the forseeable future after the incredible progress and hard work that's been put in by everyone. The team spirit on show is blinding at the moment and our young squad is just getting better and better. Having grown up watching Saints for the last 30 years with only flashes of brilliance we're now playing the most exciting and stylish football I've ever seen week in, week out. Please stay and guide us to the next level Mauricio, you know you want to!!

Indeed. Although I like any fan is excited when we get linked with and buy expensive and highly rated players I honestly don't want to see us spend more than £10 million on a player any more.

I think our team is proof that ambition can be more than just getting the cheque book out and frankly it proves the opposite - our least impressive signings have all been the biggest profile ones.

If anything that's been the only 'must improve' element of what we've done since getting back into the Prem.

The great thing is that, as word spreads about the club and players from other clubs start thinking they'd like to be part of it, the cost of getting those talented players will go down.

In the past we've had to attract big names with big offers and wages and, arguably, they've joined us for the wrong reasons, unlike Lovren, Cork, Jay-Rod, Clyne and more.

If they want to join us, the prices will be much reduced.

Assuming MOPO stays then top 4 finish next year is very possible. Fantastic to see our team doing so well. I have been a fan since the 50's and this is the best so far.

Spot on mate, well said. I'm particularly impressed at how the players have raised their game as we've been promoted. I feared most would meet their ceiling long before now but here they are looking for a Euro spot and they are still more than holding their own against so called world class teams. If only Le God were 15 years younger - would've loved to have seen him supported by this team. Likewise if we'd manage to keep hold of the Ox, Walcott, Bale and Dyer to blend in with our current squad. Ah well, an old man can dream, can't he?

Yeah, and fair play to the ones who stuck in there and made it happen - lallana, schneiderlin, fonte and lambert were the nucleus that dragged us up the leagues and now they're more than holding their own in the prem where they belong.

Of the old players that you mention, I reckon that even if we just had Bale and Le Tiss we'd be challenging for the title now!
