Davis: Shaw could cope with World Cup

Steven Davis believes his Saints teammate, Luke Shaw, would have no problem handling the pressure of a World Cup call-up.

Shaw is being considered by Roy Hodgson for a place in the squad to face Denmark, at Wembley, next month.

That will be the final England game before the provisional 30-man group is selected for Brazil.

If teenage left-back Shaw does complete a meteoric rise by making it to this summer’s tournament, Davis is confident that he will take it in his stride.

“Without doubt, I think he could cope with it,” said the midfielder.

“He is such a down-to-earth lad and one of the best things about him is that he doesn't realise how good he is.

“You don't want to heap too much pressure on young players, but everyone knows the quality he has got.

“I think he is more than capable of going and doing a job for England. It would be great for him to get that opportunity.

“But he is so level-headed that I wouldn't have any concerns with him dealing with it.”

Davis, the Northern Ireland captain, added: “For his age, it is unbelievable the talent he has got.

“Barring injuries and, obviously, staying level-headed like he is, he will go on and reach the top. There is no doubt about it.”

LUKE SHAW iis in the Right Team with the MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON to continue to improve and be the STAR that he is.

I can see him being called up for tthe WORLD CUP after SAINTS get their WEMBLEY appearance and finish above Manure in the League.

THUMBS DOWN TO MANURE.

WHO ARE WE ??? - WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON - WE'RE OFF TO BRAZIL.

THE SAINTS GO MARCHING ON ON ON.

Right, I realise this will get about 2,000 thumbs-down, but does anyone else think Luke is being just a tiny bit over-hyped? Don't get me wrong: he's got enormous potential and he's great going forward but as an actual defender he still has an awful lot to learn - he's very prone to the odd 'defensive lapse' and it costs us goals.

That's why I get annoyed by all this talk of him joining whoever. It's not just that I don't want to lose him, but I want him to just get his head down and work hard at developing his game so he becomes the best he possibly can be. Fortunately he seems to have a great attitude, which is just as well as there are all manner of unhelpful distractions flying around at the moment. People just need to shut up and let him get on with things.

Spot on Retford. I hereby join you as one of those who are shutting up and not mentioning Luke.

My only problem is how to make this post this without not shutting up or mentioning Luke.

Nonetheless, after some careful consideration, I thought it was best to speak up about Luke in order to say shut up about Luke.

Actually, maybe it's not being as hyped up as I originally thought. If you google "Luke", "Saints" and "Jesus" then the first 10 results are all something to do with a "gospel" rather than promising left backs and praise from assistant managers.

Maybe he's starting to slide under the radar a little bit?

He wont need to defend when we push him up into the winger spot and turn him into the next Gareth Bale! We need to make sure Matty Targett's defending is good.

You could be right there. Mind you a lot of Saints are coming up on my search - although Moses always appears too, so maybe something's going on at Liverpool.

Just to be on the safe side I'm still going to continue to shut up about Luke and not mention him.

The vultures are hovering and willing to pay the big bucks because of his future potential for the next 10 years in these days of home grown player rules. To protect the young players and the clubs investing in their development I think it might be appropriate to introduce a young age salary cap for their formative years, say up to 23. This way we can protect our development and prevent the expensive signing fiascos like 15 Mil for Zaha at Manure who they wouldn’t give a sniff of first team football to and let him go backwards in the reserves for 6 months before the off-loaded him on loan.

Unfortunately, "Mush", that's almost certainly illegal ...

What might work is for the FA & Eufa to bring in a regulation that they only allows teams to enter their competitions if their wage bill is under, say, 70% of their total turnover (without all that malarky of selling naming rights to your stadium to your parent company for a hundred zillion dollars, which is such obvious fraud that even Pompey would notice it). The bigger teams would still have the bigger bucks, but that's always going to happen, and at least it would bring some kind of proportion back into hte game.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Whether we like it or not, the boy has talent, the hype is there because the big boys will out gun each other for fear of possibly losing out on his signature in the future.

He will go to the World Cup, of that I have no doubt, Ashley Cole will not be even close to Brazil. Leighton Baines will be 1st choice left back with Luke 2nd.

Going forward he is very good, defending he is good, I honestly believe we have another Bale on our hands, the difference this is we have cash and the opportunity to do very well in the future.

Couldn't FIFA/UEFA bring in a rule whereby clubs are only allowed x number of non-academy under-21 year olds (i.e. say, a maximum of 5 under-21s that are bought from other clubs, but as many as they like from their own academy?)

So, rather than a wage cap for the young'uns, have a cap on clubs buying in young talent. That would slow the market up a bit and force the big clubs to develop their own talent rather than just poaching others'...
