An already soggy Hertfordshire is braced for more heavy rain and wind as the Met Office warns of further stormy weather.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for today and tomorrow as 70mph winds hit the county this afternoon.

The gales are expected to last until tomorrow morning and travellers are being warned of disruption to their journeys as well as trees being uprooted and possible damage to buildings.

A yellow warning for rain has also been issued, which could lead to more flooding in already waterlogged areas.

Hertfordshire County Councillor Terry Douris warned drivers to be careful on the county’s roads and plan their journeys ahead.

He said: “Most importantly, please observe road closures and don’t try to drive through flood water.

“Water levels change rapidly and it isn’t worth writing your car off to save a few minutes. Highways and Fire and Rescue crews will continue working round the clock to clear as much flood water as possible, but more rain will inevitably cause disruption and further flooding.”

The situation will change rapidly so follow Highways on @Herts_Highways and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue on @HertsFRSControl for updates on road closures and safety advice.

Information on road closures is also available, updated several times a day, on www.hertsdirect.org/roadclosures.
