2:40pm

Saints are knocked out of the FA Cup at the fifth round stage, with Sunderland progressing to the quarter-finals. A disappointing result and display from Mauricio Pochettino's side today. Thanks for joining us. We will have a full report and reaction for you on the website shortly.

2:38pm

SUNDERLAND 1 SAINTS 0

2:38pm

Sebastian Larsson booked for a tug on Luke Shaw's shirt (90 mins).

2:38pm

Jay Rodriguez cautioned for a late tackle on Lee Cattermole (90 mins).

2:36pm

CHANCE (89 mins): Sunderland work the ball into Fabio Borini, who is in space inside the area. He drills a shot towards the far corner, but Kelvin Davis makes a brilliant one-handed diving stop to keep out the effort.

2:33pm

CHANCE (86 mins): Sunderland break away and have a three-on-one against Saints. Connor Wickham has the ball, but refuses to pass, before running wide and dragging his shot past the far post.

2:30pm

Saints: Adam Lallana off, Sam McQueen on for his debut (83 mins).

Sunderland: Craig Gardner off, Jack Colback on (83 mins).

2:29pm

CHANCE (82 mins): A terrible miss from Rickie Lambert. Steven Davis again slips a ball into the overlapping Nathaniel Clyne. He drives a ball across the face of goal, which picks out Lambert three yards out, but he somehow scoops the ball over the crossbar.

2:28pm

Nathaniel Clyne has created almost every Saints chance today...

Daily Echo:

2:27pm

CHANCE (80 mins): A rare opportunity for Saints, and it was a good one. Steven Davis slides a little pass through for the overlapping Nathaniel Clyne. His low ball to the near post is met a few yards out by Adam Lallana, but he stabs his shot into the ground and wide.

2:25pm

Sunderland: Andrea Dossena off, Marcos Alonso on (78 mins).

2:21pm

CHANCE (74 mins): A huge let-off for Saints. Sebastian Larsson sends in a pretty routine angled cross from the right. The visitors' defence totally switches off to it, with Connor Wickham sneaking in to meet it just outside the six-yard area. It looks a simple task for the substitute to divert the ball past Kelvin Davis, but he gets barely any contact on it, and the Saints keeper gathers comfortably.

2:15pm

Sunderland: Ignacio Scocco off, Connor Wickham on (68 mins).

2:14pm

And celebrates his strike...

Daily Echo:

2:13pm

This was the moment that currently divides the sides as Craig Gardner hits the only goal of the game so far...

Daily Echo:

2:09pm

Saints: Guly do Prado and James Ward-Prowse off, Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin on (62 mins).

2:05pm

CHANCE (58 mins): Steven Davis hits a slicing shot from just outside the box that flies wide of the near post.

1:56pm

SUNDERLAND 1 SAINTS 0 (Craig Gardner 49)

This has been a dreadful game, but finally a moment of real quality has arrived. Unfortunately for Saints, it has been produced by Sunderland. Gardner rifles in a shot from just outside the area that flies across Kelvin Davis, hits the underside of the bar and goes in.

1:54pm

CHANCE (48 mins): Adam Lallana tries his luck from 25 yards, but the ball went well over the bar.

1:49pm

The second half is underway.

1:33pm

SUNDERLAND 0 SAINTS 0

1:32pm

Steven Davis booked for a tackle from behind on Fabio Borini (42 mins).

1:28pm

CHANCE (38 mins): Nathaniel Clyne storms away down the right and slides in a low ball across the face of goal. It eludes Adam Lallana, but then heads towards Rickie Lambert at the back post. However, a superb sliding clearance from Santiago Vergini saves a goal.

1:16pm

Sunderland keeper Oscar Ustari beats Jos Hooiveld to the ball...

Daily Echo:

1:15pm

Maya Yoshida booked for a trip on Fabio Borini (25 mins).

1:15pm

Fabio Borini battles Luke Shaw for an aerial ball...

Daily Echo:

1:03pm

PENALTY APPEAL (13 mins): Fabio Borini goes to ground under a challenge from Luke Shaw. The Sunderland forward, as well as his manager, think it is a clear penalty, but Mike Dean awards nothing.

1:01pm

CHANCE (11 mins): A big chance goes begging for Saints. Adam Lallana drifts in a cross towards the far post. Rickie Lambert pulls away from his marker and nods the ball down into the path of an unmarked James Ward-Prowse. The midfielder had made an excellent run to latch onto it just inside the area, but his first-time side-footed shot doesn't have enough power on it to beat the diving Oscar Ustari.

12:47pm

Mike Dean gets the match underway.

12:42pm

The teams are out here at the Stadium of Light. Kick-off now just a few moments away. Stay with us for updates from throughout the game.

12:36pm

Saints haven't beaten Sunderland in any of the clubs' last seven meetings. Their most recent victory came in January 2003, when James Beattie scored in a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

12:21pm

A draw here today and we will be heading back to St Mary's for a replay. That, however, is the last thing that Sunderland boss Gus Poyet wants. Speaking honestly, Poyet revealed that he would prefer to lose this afternoon's match than draw it.

Is it worse than losing? Yes. I don’t know if it makes sense, but yes. You tell me when we would play and then I’ll tell you why it’s worse.

Gus Poyet

12:11pm

Daily Echo: Steven Davis

Steven Davis starts for Saints today. The midfielder has enjoyed plenty of cup success, but all of that has come in Scotland. In England, he has never advanced past this stage of the FA Cup. Davis, however, is dreaming of "something special" in this year's competition.

11:57am

Daily Echo: Gus Poyet

Here is what Sunderland manager Gus Poyet had to say about today's match, writing in his programme notes...

I am sure (Southampton) will also see today's match as a very big one. Southampton are in a strong position in the Premier League and they will see this competition as one they can win, so I am expecting to face a very strong side. They are playing with confidence, so we will have to be at our best to get the better of them.

Gus Poyet

11:54am

For Saints there are starts for Kelvin Davis, Nathaniel Clyne, Jos Hooiveld, Victor Wanyama, James Ward-Prowse and Guly do Prado.

They replace Artur Boruc, Calum Chambers, Jose Fonte, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork and Jay Rodriguez.

There is a first place on the bench for 19-year-old Sam McQueen.

11:53am

Both teams have made a raft of changes, perhaps indicating their attitude towards the FA Cup v Premier League at the moment.

It's six changes for Saints but nine for Sunderland.

11:51am

TEAMS

SAINTS: K Davis, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Wanyama, S Davis, W-Prowse, Lallana, Do Prado, Lambert.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Fonte, Chambers, Schneiderlin, Cork, McQueen, Rodriguez.

SUNDERLAND: Ustari, Celustka, Dossena, O'Shea, Vergini, Cattermole, Larsson, Giaccherini, Gardner, Scocco, Borini

Subs: Mannone, Ki, Wickham, Colback, Alonso, Roberge, Mavrias.

Ref: Mike Dean

Likewise, the starting 11 could be better, but at least Sunderland's is pretty rubbish too. Nine changes for them. We should still be good enough to win. I just hope Big Vic is on form and can keep the ball away from Jos as much as possible.

Yes, but they've changed nine players, so think how they will be feeling ... and we have interesting options on the bench to change the parts of the team that aren't working if necessary.

And look at .it this way - only three of those players aren't first team regulars (K Davis, Ward-Prowse & Guly), and of those Ward-Prowse is virtually a regular, while KD was expected (and goalies need to keep their hand in more than any other position), so really it's only Guly and Hooveild that are surprises.

Still feel very confident of a win - and very hapy that I can watch it live over here :-)

No Johnson, no Mannone in goal, whilst we have made changes, I think ours make sense as Fonte's cut looked bad, and Cork/Wanyama swap looks sensible.
.
Dissapointed for you lad Gallagher that he is not playing but I guess he is not ready and I respect that.
.
Expect Lallana to come off at half time and Guly in second half for Jay-Rod to hit them with pace and Scheiderlan to have a half as well.
.
Sensible moves for me, let us frustrate them as if it is still a draw at 70 mins , he has already said a defeat would be better than a draw and we can help him out with that.

Hello everyone. Mother-in-law collected from the airport and finally I'm signing in from Stras.

Watched about 10 mins and, from what I can see:
1. It shows that this 11 don't regularly play together. Have to agree that if we lose this, the selection should come under huge scrutiny.
2. Poyet's teams sure know how to fall to ground easily, don't they?

Can anyone tell me whether the penalty appeal was a fair shout? BBC seems to say it was.

I don't like to have a go at the Ref but it just seems like its very easy to buy a free kick with this guy (Mike Dean). As soon as someone just falls to the ground its a free kick, and if they are pretending to be hurt then its a yellow card.... Cant understand it.

Sunderland to be up for this, lets hope for a more dominant 2nd half, wana see some J-Rod magic.

The same can be said of Kelvin. Sunderland does hold happy memories for the guy so why put him in unnecessarily?

I haven't seen the whole match, so I can't make sweeping statements about individual performances but I really don't get the feeling the players want this.

Of the little I saw of Guly, he chased the goalie down and, just before he went off, rose to cut out a ball with a header; both led to chances which other players srewed up. Maybe he was rubbish but that wasn't what I saw. I have seen Davis, Lallana and Rickie play bad balls, flop headers, pass to no one and, now, clear the goal from 3 yards - first Lallana and now Lambert.

It's easy to blame those who don't get regular games (or, in the case of Victor and Nat, not featured much lately) but wholesale changes won't produce a fluid team. At least the non-regulars can claim to be rusty.

AND, if there were 2 regulars who probably needed resting, then it was (aging) Rickie and (injury prone) Luke, yet they've both had long days.

I live in hope - 10 minutes!

JWP wasn't great but.... Oh my lord! Guly.... we joke about him but that was embarrassing! He was the worst player in a Saints shirt in years.

Hey, come on folks! Although I am very disappointed at the loss today, we have to realise this is the third match on the road, and another next week.

We've had a great season so far, and some of the extreme comments - e.g. 'disgraceful, shameful' etc are not really warranted. How is it that Pochettino can be a hero for most of the season, and suddenly become the villain of the peace?

Of course we are all disappointed - Sunderland have rather taken the p**s out of us this season - our bogey team I guess. And yes, I feel for the fans who made the trip all the way up to Sunderland only to come away empty handed. But that's the nature of football, isn't it?

However, the Saints are still my team, and I will continue to support MC and the players to the full. We've not had many disappointments this season, have we?

Keep the faith.

Well thats that then. Awful game by us, don't think team selection was the main problem. The players who came in should be good enough to fit in but the whole team were bad. SRL looked out of sorts from kick off and I don't know how he missed that sitter. Kelv's distribution was dire! The players looked asleep in the first half and didn't seem to wake up until 10mins from the end. Should have been good enough with the players picked but they didn't seem interested, shame.

Once again MO PO got it wrong in an away cup game at Sunderland.
If he can not put out a team to beat what was in effect Sunderland reserves then he is NOT the great manager/tactician that the press and the saints sycophants make him out to be.
Will he now realise that Guly is not a championship quality player let alone a premiership player.
All the sabre rattling in the build up to the match about 1976 revisited. What a load of bull.On todays showing not one of the players called upon are fit to lace the team of 76's boots.Maybe MO PO didn't want to win the FA CUP because he doesn't want to play in the Europa league next season.Maybe some of that shocking negative loser attitude has rubbed off on the players.
Let us hope that Poch and whoever gets picked for the West Ham match go out and reddem themselves with a resounding victory.
One point in closing if MO POX wanted an FA CUP exit why not put out a team of under 21 players.Who knows the likes of Omar Rowe,Harry Reed,Matt Targett,Turnbull, might have put on a proper footballing performance and got us at least a draw.

I am gutted , I did believe we could go on a decent cup run, but it's not to be.

I wouldn't blame any of them , they collectively had an off day , whatever the reason , I don't believe they were told to play badly.

MOPO is a top coach and if his view is that the best preparation for an assault into the top 6 next season is to avoid Europa league and start planning now , then I will swing for that.

Onwards and upwards to hammer the hammers !

How many fans braved the weather, paid large sums in train, coach and even hotel bills, on top of the match ticket, and sang their hearts out.

Can you name ONE player who really did well today? As I said above, I wasn't able to follow the whole match but I didn't see anything that shone. I could mention any of the players but, just as an example, take Shaw, I saw him make a couple of good runs, I also saw him fail to make a couple of tackles and pass to an opponent. I saw Kelvin Davis make a good save, I also saw him nearly fluff a ball into the net.

Do you think any one of them - player or management - should pocket the money they'll get paid their 'effort'?

But that isn't what makes people angry, is it? It's that the best-available team was sent out twice in 4 days - Hull was considered a priority - and, thus, the entire management and playing staff chose to make this match less important than a mid-week league match, knowing that our only chance of silverware would be today's match.

Even had we won, the team selections this week told us what the management think of the FA Cup. To think that, if this match had been scheduled for next weekend (as I had hoped), I would have booked to go even at a probable cost - 3 tickets, trains and hotel - of around £200.

The manager got his wish we will not be in the Europa League, certainly not by way of the FA Cup. Saints performance was not Premier League standard, and the people who let them down were the forwards who seem incapable of scoring goals in open play. I think that Rickie Lambert has run his course, and I do not consider him now a decent Premier League striker. Yes, his past performances have been good but it is the future now that we must consider and I do not think he is a part of it. What has happened to Sam Gallagher, he should have played tonight instead of Lambert, and the only times when the Saints threatened was when they took the ball to the goal line and pulled it back. Both Lambert and Llanna missed golden opportunities from these positions, but it was played too few times, they should play that tactic more often. I was disappointed with the manager who seemed to me to spend too much time sitting down and not enough time up on his feet encouraging the team. Lets hope things improve before Saturday or Fat Sam will be getting another 3 points.

Well there you go, Poch and the Club get the result they wanted. Exit from the FA Cup so it cuts off a route to qualify for the Europa Cup next year. A great pity for many fans including me, but understandable, sadly, from a business point of view. And from the point of view of the Manager wanting to retain his job next season and being able to concentrate on the league and not get involved in unnecessary European games where squads can be depleted through injury and suspensions. Look at Swansea and what happened to Laudrup. And Newcastle a couple of seasons ago.

Poch said this week the only European competition that mattered was the Champions League and today we were set up not to win the game so we couldn't possibly get to the FA Cup final and win it. Also very interesting he wouldn't speak to the BT interviewers before the game, because it was the FA Cup. Says it all. It will be interesting to see the possession stats which usually average 58% to 42% in our favour. Our back four was much deeper today and we didn't press the ball like we normally do. A change of tactics by the manager I would say and of course it goes without saying the team selection was suspect.

I also think Poyet didn't really want to win it either judging by his team selection. UEFA and the Premiere league has messed up the FA Cup for fans. Pity. But we can't have it all. We are back in the top league where we belong.

The fans who travelled have paid the price for the Europa League being a crap competition which is uneconomic to participate in. Money rules! If they would only make it a straight knockout competition with a free draw it would make a lot of fans through out Europe a lot happier.

It will be interesting to see what we do in the league if it looks like could qualify for the Europa League via our league position. Put out a weakened team I think and stop pressing the ball will be the order of the day.

AGREE - What has happened to Wanyama. Saw him first game vs WBA and he looked like a FIRST CLASS SIGNING and dominated the midfield.

WE ALWAYS KNEW A PREM TEAM AND ESPECIALLY AWAY WOULD BE TOUGH and the solution had to be our best players.. Today has been treated like the Spanish Cup with no real interest or passion to progress. Nigel was the master at throwing Cup Competitions but there was no excuse for not putting out our TOP PLAYERS from Poch and Jesus.

It would be wonderful to win the FA Cup. Even accepting all the arguments against the Europa League - if we qualified we could play our youth team. Clubs used to do this in the Intertoto Cup which suffered the same criticisms. At least they would want to win the games!

You know me, RS, like Andoru, it takes a lot to get a moan out of me, but what was that all about?

I feel the same a you about the match. My comment was directed at those who only appear on here when we lose.

RISING SUN I don't think anyone , happy clapper , costant moaner or ordinary fan , will be happy with that performance from a team reguarded as the best we could field today . We really are in the position ,or there abouts where we will finish in the league. Our season this year gave us the chance to blood some of our youngsters in the remaining games, for it is only prize money that is left too play for. WHAT WAS LEFT WAS THE CHANCE TO BRING THE FA CUP BACK TO SOUTHAMPTON. The management team feck up big time today with the team selection and this is what is hard to swallow. We are all entitled to voice our feelings but that does not mean we are full of doom and gloom. JUST VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE CHANCE WE HAVE CHUCKED DOWN THE DRAIN TODAY.
I suppose i am classed as a happy clapper but at WEST HAM i wll be backing the team and manager 100% weather we win or not . It will not make that much difference. But not too have the chace to bask in the glory of winning or being in the final of the FA CUP does. Anybody at the 2003 final will know what i mean . We lost that day but i will never forget seeing a sea of YELLOW SHIRTS in one half of the stadium 20 miutesafter the final whistle . whilst up the other end we were faced by EMPTY SEATS from the winning teams fans. That is what was lost by our manager today not just a game of football.

Oh well, wife's made me a cuppa. That'll cheer me up .............. Oh, maybe not, she's just said, 'Never mind, it's only a game!' AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

BIG ... BIG MISTAKE !!

THERE IS NO SEASON LEFT FOR THE SUPPORTERS - OTHER THAN PROGRESS IN THE LEAGUE.

Rumours are that the Chairman wanted more progress in the League.

WE DEMAND THE WIN against Wet Spam and to FIGHT to go above Manure and Everton in the League.

It is a wonder that our Supporters turn up for the Cup after been treated like this year on year.

Fully agree about Wanyama. At the start of the season he looked such a strong player, a real asset to the defence which had been weak last season. Now he seems to have lost interest. I get the feeling he is angling for a move away in the summer, with another fat signing-on fee. He has previous form for that - Wantawaya was his nickname at Celtic.

I feel the same a you about the match. My comment was directed at those who only appear on here when we lose.
Hi RS, yes, I know what you mean. I have to say, I'd find it difficult right now to take seriously any moans from those who moan ALL the time. I feel the likes of you and me do have more right to moan today.

Oh well, wife's made me a cuppa. That'll cheer me up .............. Oh, maybe not, she's just said, 'Never mind, it's only a game!' AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile, I hope all is going well in Japan. We must try to meet up again; maybe next season.
I was hoping to get back for the cup final, but I don't think I'll bother now. Next season it is then.

Beer Monster says...

I've told the missus that I'm refusing to go to Sunderland again. The place is a total dump, the football was disappointing, their fans never turned up and there was engineering works on the metro... managed a few beers in Newcastle to try and make up for it.
