Hooiveld wanted to quit Saints

First published in Sport

JOS Hooiveld has revealed he considered leaving Saints during the last transfer window.

The 30-year-old Dutch defender has only managed eight appearances in all competitions for Saints so far this season.

Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren have been the regular central defensive pair in the Premier League.

And when Lovren was recently sidelined through injury, Maya Yoshida was preferred by Mauricio Pochettino to partner Fonte.

“I considered leaving during the January transfer window but the manager told me it wasn't possible,” Hooiveld said.

“I will sit down at the table with him to discuss it once more during the summer.

“I'm in the squad for every game, but it will be very hard for me to get back into the starting 11 and I am hugely disappointed. “There are two other players ahead of me in the pecking order.”

Hooiveld, who is under contract at St Mary’s until the end of the 2014/15 campaign, has only made three Premier League appearances this season, compared to 25 last term.

He has not played in the league since the 3-2 home loss to Tottenham just before Christmas, when he conceded an own goal.

I think a move in the summer will be good for us both Jos. Thank you for everything you've done for us, I won't forget those goals you scored against West Ham that ensured our promotion to the Premier League.

The above comment says it all for me. Jos is a great character who has played a major part in our revival. He deserves respect....not the derision that some fickle fans choose to aim at him.

I can name a whole bucketful of guys that have pulled on the Saints shirt-some brilliant and others not so. But they have all done a job for us and often been in the right place at the right time. I do not see that it is necessary to slag off anyone who has worn the shirt-those that do could do no better.

One heck of a decent guy, always the first to applaud his supporters, and what did he get at Sunderland? A barrage of abuse, I sometimes wonder whether our fan base is as good as it used to be, we seem to have inherited a lot of bad sports, who quite frankly would be no loss if they walked away. Even the Plastics don't slag off their players whatever happens in the game. If it is instant success you want you are chasing the wrong dream, we have come a long way in short time and should be grateful, but also patient, I am looking forward to a Summer transfer window where we must bring in a little bit of extra class, and to move on up the next level. We simply haven't got enough in the locker to do much more this Season, if we can hang on to 9th we can regard it as consolidation, any better and we will have overperformed beyond expectations. The important thing is to continue to give full support of the whole team, good or (in your opinion) bad.

The truth is that he hasn't, he was good enough to help get us where we are now and it seems he wasn't allowed to leave (if in fact he did want to go, which I doubt) because we still needed him as insurance against any other unforseen injuries. Lovren looked a bit rusty yesterday, but are you really surprised at that? First game back after a severe injury, what did you expect?

its obvious that he couldn't leave in the jan window, dejan was injured which left us with just 3 CB`s. he is now also behind Yoshi in the pecking order.

we have come a long way very fast and unfortunately some players have been left behind, that's not their fault, they got us to where we are now and its worth remembering that!

Yeah. Some fans seem to have the memory of a goldfish. Josh has been a great servant to this club and has been with us through the last brilliant four seasons. If he goes at the end of the season as seems likely I'd wish him all the best and hope he finds a good championship club.

I agree with the more respectful comments on here. If you are a Southampton supporter then you should want players to want to play for the club. Players will come and go but as long as the Manager feels they are good enough to pull on the shirt then they should be given the respect they deserve! We want all Ex-Saints to speak highly of playing for the club and the fans.

I think he's been unfairly criticized and there are two reasons why I think it would be a bad idea to let Hooiveld go now.

Firstly Fonte's had a good season this time around, which has kind of made everyone target Hooiveld and Yoshida for last years defensive troubles and actually they kept the most clean sheets of any defensive pairing last season and ended the season as the first choice pairing over Fonte, proving Hooiveld can defend in the Premier League.

Secondly his style is as an old fashioned centre back, he's not the quickest but it's tough to get past him, should we get European qualification I think he'd be pretty useful against teams from leagues where their style of football is more direct.

There are some lovely positive comments on here and we all know that Players have certain levels that they achieve and can do a good job when required but the standard is very high in the Premiership, games are played at a very fast pace and Players are either competent to cope or they are not quite up to the high level and this is Jos, he has done his very best and wouldn't intentionally let the Team down, Jos style is similar to Emlyn Hughes and he didn't do so bad.

Most Supports probably agree he would still do a good job in a lower League perhaps the Championship and would be regularly playing which understandably he wants so we all wish him good luck for the future and as long as he's looked after the 1ps the £s will look after themselves, now for the best joke I heard in years.

In BBC Football Gossip today.
At the end of the season David Moyes will offer Southampton FC £30million for Adam and Luke, now don't you all think that's a brilliant joke?
