Luke Shaw is not even contemplating a spot in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad ahead of meeting up with England for the first time.

Just 16 months on from making his Premier League debut, the 18-year-old left-back has now had his impressive displays for Saints rewarded by a first international call-up.

Shaw was named as part of the 30-man squad to face Denmark on Wednesday and, should he feature at Wembley, only seven players in the post-war era will have made their debut at a younger age.

An impressive display would heighten the full-back's chances of being on the plane to Brazil, although that is not something the teenager is thinking about right now.

"I have no eyes on the World Cup," Shaw said, speaking after Saints’ 3-0 defeat to Liverpool last night.

"I will just see what happens this week with the training. If I get a chance, I get a chance. I think it is just going to be a good experience and we'll see what happens at the end of the season."

"Stevie (Gerrard) just had a little word after just to congratulate me and say 'I will see you tomorrow'. For me, it is great for the England captain to say something like that."

Shaw joins team-mates Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez in the 30-man squad, which will convene at the Grove hotel in Hertfordshire tonight.

This is the first time Saints have ever had four players in the senior squad, with a total of nine called up for England duty across the under-19, under-21 and senior age groups.

"The dressing room is buzzing," Shaw, with Saints since the age of eight, said.

"I think everyone knows what our academy is about. It is about producing young players that come through the academy and we can keep on doing that.

"Obviously we have four with the under-19s, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) with the under-21s and young Simsy (Josh Sims) who has been doing very well away with the under-17s.

"I think it is great for the club and great for the fans to see young players like us coming through."

In all, 17 players departed Southampton on international duty after last night’s disappointing loss to the title-chasing Reds.

It was a result that stopped this week being the best of Shaw's life, but not one that completely overshadows a whirlwind few days "It was a very disappointing end," Shaw said.

"We knew coming into the game it would be very tough and we didn't take our chances in the first half and we got punished for that.

"It has been an amazing week and obviously an emotional one, although I should clear up I wasn't crying.

"I was a little teary on the phone to my mum and it has been a great week.

"If we had won, it would have been the best week of my life probably, so it is a shame about the result. I am sure we will come back next week with a good result."
