One of Luke Shaw’s first assignments following his England debut will be to shackle the threat of his friend and former teammate, Jason Puncheon.

The ex-Saints winger, who is now with Crystal Palace, is expected to line-up against his old side at Selhurst Park tomorrow and could come face-to-face with Shaw.

Puncheon was one of the first people to congratulate the 18-year-old left-back following his impressive performance at Wembley on Wednesday, telling him “don’t stop now”.

And Shaw himself has credited Puncheon with playing an important role in his development from a promising academy member into a senior England international.

“He has played a massive part,” he said. “He has helped me a lot when he was here.

“He rang me up after the game to say how proud and happy he was that I made my debut for the England senior team.

“He said ‘don't stop now, just keep going’."

Shaw played the second half of England’s 1-0 win over Denmark, producing an impressive and assured performance in the final fixture before Roy Hodgson names his World Cup squad.

After the game, Hodgson was full of praise for the teenager, as was Wayne Rooney.

“He did really well,” said the Manchester United striker.

“He was comfortable on the ball, he is a good athlete and he is really quick. It’s down to the manager now.”

However, following Wednesday’s game, Hodgson appeared no closer to deciding whether Shaw or Ashley Cole, who turned in a good display in the first-half, would go to Brazil as understudy to first-choice Leighton Baines.

Much may depend on how Shaw performs between now and the end of the season, starting with tomorrow’s game at Palace.

He will almost certainly at some stage have to contend with Puncheon, who can operate down the Eagles’ right, although tends to swap wings regularly during their games.
