  • "Yes I think this could cause us a severe problem. As MoPo has told us all of our players are so good looking that it's difficult to tell them apart. Anyway putting that aside it's probably better that we are getting a ref who can't see what plainly happens in front of him rather than Clutterbrain who doesn't want to see what's happening in front of him, especially where Saints are concerned."

Andre Marriner to referee Southampton vs Newcastle a week after sending off the wrong player

Daily Echo: Andre Marriner to referee Saints Andre Marriner to referee Saints

Andre Marriner will referee Saturday’s match between Saints and Newcastle, just a week after making a high-profile blunder by sending off the wrong player.

The official incorrectly dismissed Kieran Gibbs, instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, during Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had handled in the area, as he dived to keep out an Eden Hazard shot, but Marriner identified the wrong player and instead showed a red card to Gibbs.

Despite the mistake, Marriner has not been dropped for this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures, and will take charge of the clash between Saints and Newcastle, at St Mary’s.
