A trio of Haworth gardening competitions which used to run annually is being revived.

The Garden of the Year, Best Business Premises and Children’s Tallest Sunflower contests are being re-launched by the business Steve Thorpe & Son Gardening.

The firm is sponsoring the competitions, and has already bought three trophies to present to the winners.

Steve Thorpe, who runs the business with his son Joseph, said: “The contests haven’t run for the last couple of years, but we thought we should start them up again, as it’s a good way to help get the village brightened up and looking nice. We want as many people, businesses and children to enter to make the competitions fun and successful, and at the same time make the place we live in colourful and more pleasing to the eye.

“We know people are very shy to enter, so we’re calling on people to enter any garden or business that they think looks nice.”

Judging will take place in early September so entries will be accepted up to the end of August.

The Thorpes will be giving a sunflower plant to every child in Haworth, and want them to have fun growing them before letting the Thorpes know the height when they have finished. Steve and Joseph will then come out to measure and verify the results.

Steve added: “As an incentive we will donate a pack of plants to Manorlands for every entry we get in any of the three categories.”
