Poch praises "amazing" Saints

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary's today. Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary's today.

Mauricio Pochettino hailed his “amazing” Saints after they hammered Newcastle 4-0 at St Mary’s.

The England World Cup hopefuls led the way as Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana shared the goals between them.

Pochettino was understandably delighted by what he saw and praised his side.

“I am very happy,” he smiled.

“The performance was amazing.

“I am very happy for the players and very happy for the supporters.

“We had an amazing performance and not just the final result but the way that we played was outstanding.”

With England assistant manager Ray Lewington watching from the stands the game only further enhanced the World Cup claims of his stars.

“It’s clear that for the three English players that we have here at Southampton it is very good to maintain those high standards they have shown over the season,” said Pochettino.

“It’s only going to increase their chances of going to Brazil so it’s very good for them.

“It’s very good for us as well. We keep on improving as a team and we are delighting our fans with these amazing home performances.”

He added: “I had two clear feelings in the first half – I was very happy overall because we were playing fantastically well but I was very angry because we were being so wasteful.

“I think actually the goal came with the 11th chance that we created.

“In the end we got a 4-0 and made a hero out of the opposition keeper and that really shows what happened.”

How good was that. Very difficult to pick a MoM out of that display. I'd have to rule out Artur, Jose and Dejan as they didn't have a lot to do. Both full backs did very well and the midfield of Steve Davis, Corky and JWP were exceptional.Sir Richard showed what a great and unselfish player he is and Jay got two and though he had plenty of chances two is never bad. So that leaves Adam. He just seems to go from strength to strength at the moment and it seems as if defenders are frightened to tackle him in case he makes them look stupid. So he gets my vote, very closely followed by all three mids already mentioned. Bl00dy awesome all round performance. Now let's stick one up ManC.

What we have at St Mary.s right now is almost unique a squad totally in tune with each other, the manager, the fans and the club is a happy place. For the manager and the players this must be cloud 9. For those who want to read the crap rumours in the ghastly Mail and Mirror about who is going where and when ,go ahead... But I for one do not believe a word. This team this manager and this club are going places but I very much doubt it will be anywhere but St Mary's . The future is very bright and it's red and white. Today we could have beaten anyone.

Great game today. Well done all saints players. Mid field showed to be a bit more solid than last week. Cork again very good, JWP plenty of leg work and good crosses. and unsung hero Davis all doing a solid performance. Keep this up and we might not see Victor for some time to come. Especially as the three today hardly gave the ball away. Which cannot be said for Victor. Three goal scorers i thought played very well together. Bit frustrating in the first half what with all the misses, but came good in the second.
All in all a very enjoyable game to watch---thank you.

There wasn't a single second of that game where I felt we'd lose. It helped that Newcastle were abominable but we MADE them abominable. It felt like all the players were trying to atone for recent errors.

It was so clear that we were going to score that everyone around me ended up laughing at our inability to get the ball in the net for the first 45 minutes. Felt like the Championship again when everyone just KNEW we'd win games. If we could play like that all season we'd make the champions league without a glitch.

I couldn't think of a single player who has a bad game.

Disagree slightly about Fonte, though - he put in a couple of pressure tackles in our penalty area where he just casually took the ball off the attacker and ran off with it like a thief taking candy from a baby - wonderful.

J rod was everywhere and could have had 6. Cork and JWP were so comfortable In midfield. A great day at the office. I just hope we see the 4 in the England World Cup squad. This time next year we could be talking 5 or 6 in the England squad.

Jose had a very good game, did his usual, one a match casual back pass error, which Newcastle were not good enough to take advantage of. You have to admire Callum he could barely stand at the end of the game, he had taken some hefty blows and kept going. When all XI are on song, there are very few teams that could beat us. IMO

Took the words out of my mouth, totally fair assesment.
J Rod is getting better every week, 2 months ago no chance of getting to the world cup but now he must be in with a great chance, but knowing what England managers are like Hodgson will probably chicken out and pick players from so called big clubs even if they are not getting a game each week.

So he gets my vote, very closely followed by all three mids already mentioned. Bl00dy awesome all round performance. Now let's stick one up ManC.[/p]
I couldn't think of a single player who has a bad game. Disagree slightly about Fonte, though - he put in a couple of pressure tackles in our penalty area where he just casually took the ball off the attacker and ran off with it like a thief taking candy from a baby - wonderful.[/p]
Jose had a very good game, did his usual, one a match casual back pass error, which Newcastle were not good enough to take advantage of. You have to admire Callum he could barely stand at the end of the game, he had taken some hefty blows and kept going. When all XI are on song, there are very few teams that could beat us. I agree with everything BUT not the "ghastly" Mail bit. The Daily Mail has given very good support to The Saints this season and has been very praiseworthy of MP's efforts. They have also said very good things about our English stars and given the club's Academy very good comment.

The only time, as far as Saints are concerned, was when the Mail got it 100% wrong when last season they forecast us for relegation. So fair do, please!

Of course, you are otherwise right - the Mirror is ghastly!

A fantastic win today! Everybody had a great game. I thought Chambers was exceptional, surely it won't be long before he gets a senior England call up. It was nice to see JWP have a great match too. Jrod is on fire at the moment and SRL looks to have got his form back. As for Adam, well what can you say. A fantastic goal and performance. I think we're all witnessing him maturing into a truly world class player. He was unplayable today. The truly great players seem to have an aura about them and appear to have loads of time on the ball, defenders are scared to tackle them and back off. Maybe I'm getting carried away a bit but, I don't think there is a better English player in the EPL at the moment. Well done to the whole team and MP! Now let's do city next week!

Yep, without a sterling performance from Elliot, it could have been a properly embarrassing pummelling. Funny to say it about a goalkeeper after a 4 goal defeat but he's done himself no harm at all.

I said on the live thread that it should have been a straight red ospers. I also said that I thought that the ref bottled it, as he did with the one on chambers just after. perhaps he was afraid to cause controversy again?
if he didn't see it and it isn't in his report then the FA should take action and issue Cisse with a 3 game ban! they cant allow tackles like that to go unpunished.

I thought our defensive 4, backed up brilliantly by JWP and cork (and spider when he came on), were all outstanding today. dejan and fonte didn't have a lot to do but what they did they were superb at, shaw and chambers worked up and down the line all day and the best I have seen them both do it, they both also got stuck in at the back when needed, pure class!
the front three were on song again and SRL looked back to his best. J-rod is scoring for fun at the moment and might be the 20 goal a season we all want. we should still strengthen the strike force in the summer but the way the three of them played today it will be hard for someone else to break into the team.
S. Davis was sublime again today and is a real workhorse for the team.
i`m finding it very difficult to pick a MOM, the only player i wouldn't pick is AB and only because he had nothing to do. in the end i think i will go for SRL, he needs goals to be on the plane for brazil and despite that he was totally unselfish for the first goal. it would have been easy for him to blast a shot at goal himself but he showed real class and commitment to the club by passing to J-rod. Well done SRL you showed that the tem is more important to you than individual glory, anyone think donkey carroll would have passed the ball?
great game, great performance and great to be a saints fan, its even better for me because my brother in-law is a Newcastle fan, he`s only been to Newcastle once for one game and claims his second team is poopey! oh happy days!

Been in Metz all day (wife's romantic birthday treat ...... Metz!!!!!! I mean, Metz!!!!! Heck, I'm a softy).

Anyway, now at the hotel after dinner. Just managed to catch a sort of last few minutes of MotD. The Internet in these parts is pants. Was it just the fact that the Internet wasn't working well or did MotD gloss over the match like it didn't happen? They seemed embarressed to show soimething so good that wasn't from the usual table-topping suspects.

Was there any analysis at all, or did they just say it ended 4-0 and the Toon played badly? That's all I caught, at least.

Still, let's put this into context ourselves, It's a World Cup year and SEVEN English players started - that's more than the Toon have in their first-team squad. I really don't care what nationality a player is but when a team can boast SEVEN Englishmen starting and that team then hammering a top-half prem team like that, EVERYONE in England should be paying attention.

Well done all. Now to celebrate the wife's birthday properly - night all!

whats going on in the world? your not in Strasbourg and norgie went awol and we stuff the toon? that's it your both going back to where you were today next week!

they did gloss over the game a bit stras but i think its because it was a mid table `meaningless` game. to be fair to them though they did mention how great we were and the three forwards who are hoping to get on the plane to brazil, bigging up lalla in particular. they said that a few months ago the question was `would he make the squad?` but now the question is `whos going to make way for him in the starting line up?` they then mention luke and his chance of getting in the squad.
I, like you, aren't to worried about a players nationality but i really am proud of our club and the amount of young English players they play weekin week out in the prem, if only other clubs could follow our lead!
have fun with the other half ;0)

Now to celebrate the wife's birthday properly - night all![/p]
whats going on in the world? your not in Strasbourg and norgie went awol and we stuff the toon? that's it your both going back to where you were today next week! they did gloss over the game a bit stras but i think its because it was a mid table `meaningless` game. to be fair to them though they did mention how great we were and the three forwards who are hoping to get on the plane to brazil, bigging up lalla in particular. they said that a few months ago the question was `would he make the squad?` but now the question is `whos going to make way for him in the starting line up?` they then mention luke and his chance of getting in the squad. I, like you, aren't to worried about a players nationality but i really am proud of our club and the amount of young English players they play weekin week out in the prem, if only other clubs could follow our lead! have fun with the other half ;0) el caballo santos101

Btw, I know Peterborough are Posh, but they have a player called Nathaniel Knight-Percival ffs! That out poshes Forbes Phillipson-Masters.

Don't you mean " All night!". ;0)
LOL! That's brilliant.

Must admit, I'm a bit tired today.

whats going on in the world? your not in Strasbourg and norgie went awol and we stuff the toon? that's it your both going back to where you were today next week!

they did gloss over the game a bit stras but i think its because it was a mid table `meaningless` game. to be fair to them though they did mention how great we were and the three forwards who are hoping to get on the plane to brazil, bigging up lalla in particular. they said that a few months ago the question was `would he make the squad?` but now the question is `whos going to make way for him in the starting line up?` they then mention luke and his chance of getting in the squad.
I, like you, aren't to worried about a players nationality but i really am proud of our club and the amount of young English players they play weekin week out in the prem, if only other clubs could follow our lead!
have fun with the other half ;0)
Came home this afternoon. Thanks for the feedback. You're probably right about Norgie and I turning this weekend's plans into a ritual but I've already stuffed up next weekend - I'll be in Manchester. Sorry everyone, my bad :(

You're welcome - anything to help our ex-pats. Keep a link to the site - they generally have most of our matches on there, generally good quality as well.

On to more important matters - are you making it to St Mary's for any games before the end of the season?

Alas not, Velleity. City next weekend will almost certainly be the last of the season (busy April and May) but we'll definitley try to link up early next season, yes?

I wonder if, with NC gone, we'll still do a mini Swiss pre-season (mini Swiss? Sounds like something Cadbury sells!). If so, I might try to get down there again. So if you fancy nipping down to the lakes and the Alps where the air is fresh and the laundry is placed immaculately and in perfect order on the washing lines .........

I, like you, aren't to worried about a players nationality but i really am proud of our club and the amount of young English players they play weekin week out in the prem, if only other clubs could follow our lead! have fun with the other half ;0)[/p]
Came home this afternoon. Thanks for the feedback. You're probably right about Norgie and I turning this weekend's plans into a ritual but I've already stuffed up next weekend - I'll be in Manchester.
