Shaw: There's more to come from super Saints

Luke Shaw holds off Mike Williamson yesterday.

Luke Shaw is loving life at Southampton and believes the best is yet to come.

A tumultuous start to 2014 has not been able to derail what has been a fine second season back in the Barclays Premier League.

Saints have impressed fans and pundits alike with their swashbuckling style and focus on home-grown talent, epitomised by Saturday's 4-0 mauling of Newcastle.

Seven English players started for Mauricio Pochettino's side, for whom Jay Rodriguez netted either side of efforts from Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.

Those goals will only boost the trio's World Cup ambitions and fellow England international Shaw believes this is a special time at St Mary's.

''They are superb every week,'' the left-back said of the goalscorers. ''To have all four of the goals to be from Englishmen is superb.

''It is great to play for a team like this and especially with the way the gaffer likes his full-backs to play high and wide.

''I think that is one of my qualities as an attacking full-back and I think Calum Chambers today was superb.

''He said to keep playing how we've been playing. We're only going to get better.

''We've got a lot of young players in the team that will get older, get more experienced and improve as players.''

Few could have foreseen the manner in which Saints dominated against the team that started the day above them in eighth, with only Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot's inspired display and some wayward finishing preventing an even grander scoreline.

''It is a massive boost,'' Shaw said. ''We want to keep on playing how we're playing and finish as high as possible.

''By winning games like this, which was a big game for us and the fans watching, is a massive boost.

''I wouldn't say they were poor, but I think we had a game plan. We knew how Newcastle played.

''They like to be physical and get the ball in the air, but I think our two centre-backs they played well today and they kept Papiss Cisse quiet.

''It is great for me and the other three at the back to get a clean sheet.

''We spoke before the game about getting a clean sheet because we've leaked a few goals recently. To get a clean sheet at home as well was very good for us.''

As impressive as Southampton were, Newcastle's performance at St Mary's was insipid and the 2,187 travelling fans made their feelings known at the final whistle.

The performance of goalkeeper Elliot, making his first league appearance of the season in placed of the injured Tim Krul, was arguably the only positive, but the manner of defeat overshadowed that.

''It was very disappointing to lose in that manner,'' Elliot said.

''I think you have to give Southampton credit because they turned up and played very well.

''We did not get after them and the goal at half-time was unhelpful.

''Of course you want to play well and to make saves as a keeper, but at the end of the day, the result is most disappointing.''

Nice positive interview from Luke.
Just hoping that he stays to "improve and become more experienced" with the other young players, in the team.

Luke is loving life at Southampton and I suggest we all do the same, always best to live life in the present moment. It was a great result, Geordies never travel well to the South Coast, they are not used to the Sunshine and fresh air.
Rob Elliot had a good game in goal for them, it should have been a bigger margin but for him. Robbie Elliot used to play for the Geordies from 2001 to 2006, the Sunday quiz is to name more examples of same namesakes playing for the same club.

When you watch the lads together, when you see them congratulate each other following goals and wins you can see there is a massive and genuine camaraderie. I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that some will leave, they are loving being part of this dynamic team and playing under this dynamic manager.

Diverpool didn't sell suarez despite arsenil triggering his buyout clause, £40mil+£1 in the summer, and the fact that he said he wanted out to play champs football. KL, RK and the board are going to have to be strong and turn down the silly money that's going to be offered in the summer. KL isn't short of a few quid so she doesn't need the money, so its going to come down to how far they think the club can go and what they want to achieve.
its great to hear that luke is enjoying playing for saints, with his `mates` and playing under MP. another hint to the board that the players all want MP to stay. lets hope they can sort out MP`s contract as soon as possible so that we can enjoy watching Southampton in the world cup!

I have already said on one of these threads that I think Luke is going to be under intense scrutiny next season, wherever he is playing.
My opinion is that he would be better off at Saints with everyone around him who know exactly what he needs to keep his stability.
At least one more season with us, and if we should win something, then long term for hhim and the other young Saints.

Something will have to give in the summer with all the constant justifiable media hype around many of our players and manager. We either sell some of our prize assets or we increase the wage bill to keep their heads from being turned by their agents. Over to you SFC executive, it has to be a difficult balancing act as nobody wants to do a Portsmuff again.

Seedhouse you are spot on, it's been my sentiment in the Echo from the early games when Saints were 3rd in the League, it's the Spanish/Latin way, if people are going to be together every day they become a family to love and support each other.
MoPo has done his psychology on one of the ways to make Players happy is to respect each other all be mates and good friends and praise each other and it's worked, it's already in his family upbringing and he's instilled it in the Players and they love him and love Playing for him and Southampton, I agree if he stays and I think he will all the Players will, if any Player moved to one of the top Clubs they are no more guaranteed to win Cups and play in Europe than Southampton, the Players are excited to Play and excited about next season it's the progress they were expecting since MoPo came to Southampton and the surprise and sadness of the dismissal of Nigel has withered but never forgotten.

It's 40 years since I first watch Saints when they played Bolton in the January, I wanted to see Peter Thompson who had just been transferred from Liverpool to Bolton, I didn't know that Players spoke to each other and spat and in 1976 they won the FA Cup on my birthday May 1st but this is the most exciting time I've ever known even without Cups, I'm already looking forward to next season but not wishing my time away, onwards and upwards is the only way Saints are going

Absolutely agree. The club needs to sell itself to the group by retaining Pochettino and showing that it has genuine ambition to strengthen and step up to the next level. In my view all we need is a goalkeeper (to replace Kelvin and compete with Boruc), another centre half (to replace Hoover), someone with pace (to replace Punch) and a striker (to replace Osvaldo). Throw in another couple of top academicians and I think we could go all the way. Lallana will want to stay, but we must hang on to Luke, Morgan, J-Rod, Gaston and Lovren. Get 'em signed up.

A magnificent performance yesterday again underlining the greatness of Poch. Jay has come on big time under Poch and is looking worthy of a place on the plane to Brazil with every game he plays. The only worry is that with every great performance more and more clubs will be looking to get Poch and the lads. Unfortunately I can see Poch going if a big club comes in for him. He's slef-assured and he must be extremely confident of delivering at a big club. Somebody with that much talent and confidence will want to test himself to see just what he's capable of. I don't think the club will want to sell any of our best players, but if a big club comes in for one of them I think they'll leave.

A fantastic display by the lads yesterday. One of our very best displays of the season and lets be honest there has been quite a few of those.
Even 8-0 to the SAINTS would have flattered Newcastle.
There goalkeeper Elliot was a more than adequate replacement to the well rated Tim Krull.
If only Gazzinga had shown such expertise for us between the sticks back in the autumn when Boruc was injured we would be at least a half dozen points better off.
Maybe MO PO should take a leaf out of the late great TED BATES book and sign Rob Elliot up for the Saints for next season.Back in the 1960s in the old first division the super Saints put 9 goals against Wolves who goalkeeper was one Dave McClaren.Mind you Dave Mac made some super saves that day.It could have been 15plus goals for the Saints.Next season when we needed some goalkeeping cover Ted signed Dave from the Wolves. Those were great days for the club at fortress Dell. The next couple of seasons could be even better for the Saints.Europe here we come.MO PO'S red army are on the march so watch out MAN CITY WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU AND ECLIPSE YOUR BLUE MOON.

Nah..... I prefer to watch Premier league football. Not that muck that you lot are force fed. To add insult to injury you probably won't even have that to look forward to next season, no wonder you're angry. It won't be long till you lot merge with Fareham Town . Now now... Don't go getting all upset on us. You see that Fash FC football club of yours is nothing more than our ball of yarn, here for our amusement. Occasionally we see fit to acknowledge your club's stench ridden presence with a little gentle mocking and deriding, all in good fun.

I believe POOCHY saw the potential at our club and the effort needed to move this club forward and that is the test you talk about. With respect to the clubs like MAN CITY, ARSENAL , CHELSEA and the others who have mega rich owners spending millions their managers have a much easier test than POOCHY has at our club. That is why i believe he will stay, be given the tools needed to change our club from a bottom/ mid table team into a leading club all in good time. With our policy of producing players and only having too purchase fewer expensive additions we will really be the envy of the big clubs. It will not happen next season but the journey really has started.

I hope you're right. He's shown what he can do at what is a relatively young age for a manager, he'll have attracted the attention of big clubs and not just in England. I could see a PSG or Monaco being interested in him. Given the tools I agree with you that he's capable of putting us in the top bracket. I don't want to see us lose any players but to me Poch staying is paramount. And fair play to him for not playing silly buggers when NC left, he could have used that as a bargaining chip but he handled the situation in a classy way. Top bloke!

I also notice that the players weren't physically or mentally challenged this week, and the `glitter twins` or whatever it calls them, both did well . well lalla being one of them, did more than well and had another great game and not only set up a goal, something we were told hes not that good at, but scored a great goal. the other `glitter twin` came on late and did well whilst on and set J-rod up for the 4th goal.
I wonder why mentally challenged hasn't told us any of it pearls of wisdom this week?
