Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez suffers cruciate ligament injury ruling him out of the World Cup in Brazil

Daily Echo: Jay Rodriguez receives treatment for his injury at Manchester City on Saturday. Jay Rodriguez receives treatment for his injury at Manchester City on Saturday.

Saints striker Jay Rodriguez’s World Cup dream is over after a scan today revealed the full extent of the knee injury he sustained against Manchester City on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who is the club’s top scorer this season, will require surgery on a cruciate ligament injury and faces about six months on the sidelines.

That means Rodriguez, whose red hot form saw him handed an England start earlier this season, will not figure for Saints again this campaign and also forces him out of England boss Roy Hodgson’s plans for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

A statement from Saints said: "Southampton Football Club can confirm that, following his injury on Saturday against Manchester City, Jay Rodriguez has been diagnosed as having suffered a rupture to his anterior cruciate ligament.

"This will keep him out of action for six months and regrettably means he will not be fit for selection by the English national team at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil."

Saints director Les Reed added: "Jay is naturally disappointed, but is determined to get back playing for Saints as soon as possible.

"Everything will be done to return him to full fitness and deliver a speedy recovery.

"Jay has asked us to pass on his gratitude to everybody who has shown him their concern and sympathy during the 48-or-so hours since his injury.

"Everyone at the Club now wishes Jay well and we will support him, along with his family, to ensure that an international career plays a big part in his future."

We visited the National Footy Museum after the match on Saturday. As we entered, we were welcomed by a museum guy who, on noticing we were Saints fans immediately said, 'I assume you were at the match, how bad was that injury?' It turned out he was an Evertonian who, like so many other fans around the country - including decent Cherries fans, of course - really hoped that Jay would make the plane. His form, his goals and, I think, his honest, hard-working attitude (like Adam's) has really caught a lot of people's imagination. It's such a shame he'll be out for most (perhaps ALL) of the rest of this year. I hope he isn't hurried back and this can heal in its own good time. More than that, once back, I hope this will spur him on to working even harder, so that he can eventually become the great he's been rapidly growing into.

Good luck Jay.

How tragic poor lad lets hope it isnt the end of his career however players who suffer such injurys rarely come back as good as they were....speaking to someone who suffered this they told me its agony and at least 6 months before can even train properly...so sorry to be harsh but Saints now desperately need 2 or even 3 strikers in the summer. We have only one and i love rickie but hes getting on and not fast will be getting injury prone with age we have now no pace in our attack at all...got that idiot osvaldo out on loan and apparentley they dont want him either..if cant sell him we are stuck coz he should never play for us again! We need to buy and buy big on proven strikers or next season will be playing without any forwards...Want to thank Jay for all he did for us and hope he can come back but realistically we have to consider him gone forever and if he comes back we got a bonus player. ...sad end to the season.

I had an ACL tear 20 years ago and my recovery as an amateur player was about 8-9 months. It was a trying period as my brain had to teach my operated leg how to move again, similar to that of an infant learning to use its leg muscles. But technology has far progressed since then, and with professional athletes being provided top medical treatment and therapy, recovery times are right about 6 months, although there have been instances where professionals have recovered in as little as 4-5 months. With the medical and fitness staff at St. Mary's, don't be surprised if Jay is ready by mid-August early September. Best of luck for a speedy recovery Jay!!!!

GOOD LUCK JROD.

This has left SOUTHAMPTON with a big hole to fill.

IDEALLY WE GET SOME-ONE OF LUKAKU QUALITY ON LOAN.

It has all got messy with the DANI SITUATION and the money tied up.

Dani is a good addition on the bench and good in Cup Games - but not a prolific Goal scorer - suited to Italian Football - and if he continues to be disruptive in the Dressing Room and has a short fuse - then GET RID.

WE WILL MISS JROD AND HIS GOALS. It shows you that if you have real talent it shines through. TOP SCORER in the Championship - took time to adapt - and now some pretty awesome goals - over and over again.

THE GOALKEEPING SITUATION is also very messy. If the Club is genuinely serious is getting every point avaialable and progressing above manure and spuds - THEN A NEW KEEPER WE MUST HAVE TO CHALLENGE BORUC.

AT CB - We must have more competition and cover. Take Jose and Lovren out injured and we are scuppered. Even one of them out for a few games and we leave ourselves vulnerable.

EVERTON HAVE BUILT THEIR TEAM ON LOANEES AND A FREE - why not some of the same for us.

WE MUST HAVE THE AMBITION WITH OUR CURRENT MANAGER TO PUSH ON.

RESPECT and good wishes to Guly - Hoover etc who must surely be on their way.

ALL OUR TOP PLAYERS ARE NOT FOR SALE.

If you really think that Lukaku, Delafoeu, Barry will be on loan next season then dream on Lukaku is likely to go on sale, Delafoeu will be back with Barca as they are not allowed to buy for a season and dirty Gareth Barry will be on free. Lukaku will go to a big club that's for sure and that might be Dortmund " Lewandoski departure to Bayern " and they have the money to spend and they are a Champions league club !. Why not getting Lescott he will be on free and have the experience yes is salary might be an issue but why not

I'm convinced that he was on for 20 goals and going to Brazil. Its not going to happen but you can sure about this lad's attitude, commitment, and aptitude for hard work will get him back where he belongs - a leading premiership goals scorer and England international (and as far as rehabilitation is concerned he could not be at a better football club).

My Saints player of the season and a top bloke.
