Following the article regarding not being able to pay bills at the council offices, I have discovered that the council is about to put another nail in the coffin of Weymouth and Portland Residents (Echo, April 12).

I use the brown sack collection service for my garden waste, these cost £1.20 each. However for the past few weeks none have been available at the Londis store in Weymouth and I was advised to buy them from the council offices. I walked across town to the said offices, only to be told that they no longer sell the sacks and that from October the collection service will be withdrawn.

In its place, we are expected to ‘rent’ a special wheelie bin which will be collected once a fortnight, the rent for this bin is £40 for the spring and summer, and £20 for the winter period. I was advised to share the cost and the bin with a neighbour. All very well, but the first question that springs to mind, is where to locate the bin so that both you and your neighbour can have easy access.

I am aware that a ‘new system’ is being put in place for waste collection and recycling, but to withdraw the brown sack collection for garden waste is ludicrous – yet another bin on a fortnightly collection which will attract flies and maggots.

I only hope that when the person who dreamt up this crazy idea, gets to his or her late 70s, can afford to run a car, can then lift the sacks into the boot, and when they get to the tip, they can climb the metal steps with their arthritic knees in order to put the waste into the skip. In the meantime, apart from having a compost bin, which I really don’t want, has anyone any other good ideas?
