Mauricio Pochettino described Saints’ win at Swansea as “massive” as they closed in on yet more records.

Rickie Lambert’s injury time winner put Saints within a point of their highest top flight points total in 29 years and equalled their record of seven away victories in a season.

Daily Echo:

A delighted Pochettino said: “It’s a difficult game to play because you see that both clubs have already achieved their goals for the season.

“Mathematically we couldn’t go higher than the eighth position but I thought overall we played with a lot of intensity, we played well, we played in the manner we know how to play.

“Perhaps it wasn’t a spectacular game but we did achieve the three points which help us to achieve the maximum number of points we have achieved in any Premier League season and also the maximum number of wins away from home.

“These three points are massive.”

Daily Echo:

Speaking of the strange goal that won the game he added: “In the history of football there has been even more bizarre goals but I guess it can happen.

“I thought overall we did very well, we are very happy with the victory we achieved and also with the team’s performance. I thought we did very well.”

At least this week the last player to touch it in was one of ours!!
Just stick together next season, has Dejan Lovren got a younger brother we could sign up? + maybe a couple more in support.
We have proved this season that you don't need to be the richest to get in the top ten but it's all down to team work, talented young players and the right manager. Enjoy the summer break - can't wait for next season!

It was a tussle between the two teams at the top of the Premier League possession table. Needless to say, we bossed today by 62% to 38%.

Seriously, if we get just a fraction more clinical in our finishing next season then we'll be top four. That's certainly worth splashing a bit of cash for in the summer because the rewards will be immense.

Don't forget the stupid number of penalties they have had and the unbelievable number of certainties we haven't been given. Quite simply without Suarez they wouldn't be playing Champions league next season. He was the difference at St Marys and the rest of them were no better than us.

As I understand it he's a Pompey fan pretending to be a Liverpool fan attempting to make us feel in some way bad that the second biggest brand in English football has got more points that us. What a man: part Iago, part Einstein, all tw@t.

For the record, we're also not doing as well as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern. But do you know what? We're doing an absolute fucksite better than Pompey.

Nice to sneak an ugly win for a change. We've not had too many of those. I'm only glad the goal didn't affect Swansea in any way. I wouldn't have wanted to condem them to relegation with a goal like that. As it is, I can just enjoy the absurdity of it and the fantasy football points for Lambert.

I agree Bob, diverpool fans make their home games harder for away teams with the atmosphere they create when the teams come out, a lot of that includes the use of scarfs during 'you'll never walk alone'. We should try to recreate that a bit.
What are the new scarfs like? From the pics I saw they look stripey, is that a clue to next seasons shirt?

I congratulate you sir, best post of the season.

So the summer needs to bring the squad being kept together, moving the fringe players on so that they can get playing again (because each and every one of them deserves it for their contribution to getting us back to where we belong and they will always have my respect).
Osvaldo and Ramirez.....

Right. these two need to be sat down and directly asked if they want to be Saints players or not. Ramirez still has not realised his full potential and I find that disappointing. Osvaldo needs redemption and the only way he is going to achieve that is by knuckling down and banging in the goals just like Suarez has this season. It's the only way to get the team and the fans back onside. If that's not going to happen then he needs to be off as soon as he can otherwise his career is over. Redemption through goals is his only option if he is to remain at Saints.

the board have been quite clear - they don't need to sell players. Clearly there are going to be plenty of offers flying around for our top players. I expect to see the board fighting like tigers to keep the squad together or, if a player wants out, they get proper value for the talent we have spent time and effort developing. (No more negotiating from a position of weakness)

I also expect astute signings in the summer. Especially a goal poacher.

Never gave that a thought, in my book that would do me a treat.. Like to say thank you S.F.C. for a great day out at the cost of £ 6:75.. I think the away supporters were treated very well indeed, a scarf cheap tickets and travel and a meal deal. For that i give you ten out of ten. And of course my support for next season.etc etc etc.

Sad as I was to see Nicola Cortese leave he was a banker and successful business man, not a football person. Katharina is also a successful business person . We don't need the business side running football affairs. We seem to be doing OK with MoPo managing with Les Reed overseeing things as well. Even under NC the stated aim was that we were going to live within our means. That's normal business sense unless we use Poopey financial prudence. So in answer to your question, no we are not Fulham in disguise. WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

A fantastic season and our fifth year on year improved performance. People say it can't go on, well why not? This team was cheaply assembled and managed by an unknown manager. If Tottenham want MoPo he was sat at home after Espanyol let him go, did they call him? No we did. If Chelsea want Luke Shaw why did their academy reject him? We gave him the chance he needed. A couple of new signings and we go top six. There are times to invest in a successful project and now is that time.

I agree.

We need two or three top class signings and we can do what Liverpool did this season! EASY!

We just need to find our own Suarez!!

Please Please Please Katharina tell Ralph & the new board you have appointed especially Les Reed to stop delaying and put a new contract to MoPo now why are they waiting. Also make a categorical statement that 'no star players are being sold as we are going to push on for a Champions League spot next season'.
This would help settle the damaging media speculation down and show potential transfer targets the forward intention.
Action is needed now and the new board must show that they are not there just to stabilize us in mid table.
We have a very good young side that respond to the manager and that their ambitions can be realized next season with some good signings.
PLEASE DO NOT BREAK UP THIS SQUAD AFTER ALL THE WORK AND INVESTMENT THAT HAS BEEN DONE.
A top proven striker (eg Bony or Lukaku) and a pacy winger (Zaha), plus a centreback (Steven Caulker) and a Goalkeeper (Marshall or Reddy) would cost about £40m less the sale of fringe players.
Do not leave it too late and sign the new players early BEFORE the World Cup as it will be manic afterwards. Do not sale any star players they are under contract so tell them to give us another season then see where we are, just offer a big bonus for getting into the Champions League.
Lets have some action NOW.
The opportunity to push on is now, so future expenditure the following season would not as much with more younger players coming through and Champions League revenue to come.

I think MP can almost name his own price and get a contract. I think he is waiting to see how much he will be allowed to spend. He has already been told that no player he wants to keep will be sold. Though you may find a few are looking for upgrades in wage to their contracts to stay.
I think it is still possible to keep this squad and manager together if the board are prepared to spend and transfer targets have already been identified.
I could be wrong of course but I see next season as the likely crunch season for Saints if they do not reach European football, then I think we could lose several players. and maybe the manager will go.
I do think there will be a limit to what they spend.
The carrying across of transfer monies to a following season is normal practice. As Saints have done and probably did last season as well. Its not anything new in the Premier.
Osvaldo's price has tumbled and he is being cast adrift by Juventus and any other interest is liable to have died away after his inept performances at Juventus. So it maybe he has to be brought back into the fold, obviously MP saw something in the player, maybe a second chance will be given. One thing for sure we can't just write off 15 million.

Going a bit soft myself because I've been wondering if we should start calling the skates "Glutes" and the club "Glutesmouth"?

Cant disagree with your sentiments (apart from Zaha who is truly awful, not only could he not break into a poor manure team but after being loaned out he couldn't get into a Cardiff team who were fighting relegation. He also hasn't got the work ethic to fit in with our style!).
theres no point the board shoving a contract in MP's face as he has always said he wont talk about contracts until after the season, only a week left and they can talk contracts until the cows come home.
The board, through les reeds statement (amongst others) have already said that no player that MP wants to keep will go, and thats good enough for me, they cant say no star player will be sold because MP might want to sell a player or 2, Osvaldo is also a star player and he is as good as gone.
As for setting targets for next season, sky have a piece on their site stating that MP cant set targets because he doesn't know which of his players are going. What MP actually said is that he doesn't know what players are going to be here at the start of the season, which could equally mean that hes not sure what players we will be buying. A lot of things can happen between now and the start of the season so saying what we want to achieve is OK but they must not set targets. IE say we want to continue to improve the squad and our league position but don't say we want to finish in a champs league place.

I've got used to not having stripes and sort of associate it with the new era. I'm not fussed either way but if we do go back to stripes please don't couple it with a return to the rest of the old era.

There appears to be a resignation by every football commentator be it MOTD, SSN or the radio that it is inevitable that we will lose our young stars and manager. Given how well they've done that would have happened to a certain extent under any leadership, but I can't help feeling that Saints would have taken a far more robust and aggressive stance under Cortese. Some people post give Ralph a chance he's only been in the job a short while, well it's a few months now and Cortese hit the ground running on day one. I hope that Ralph turns out to be the best chairman we've ever had but, for me, the early signs aren't great.

Don't forget the stupid number of penalties they have had and the unbelievable number of certainties we haven't been given. Quite simply without Suarez they wouldn't be playing Champions league next season. He was the difference at St Marys and the rest of them were no better than us.

have poopey won trophies then? wow why have you never mentioned that before?
can we beat the points record of a team that got their total by cheating? do we care about that? two answers then
1, yes we can beat your record and we can do it by not over spending, like you did to the point where you became the only prem team to go bust!
2, no we don't, no really we don't care. had you managed your points total without spending so much that you are still paying for it now, or not because 3 admins later you managed to reduce over £100mill worth of debt to virtually nothing with the robbing of charities and local businesses thrown in, then we might care but we don't. you are irrelevant to us, we really don't care what you have done with other peoples money.

as the plane said `you are always looking up at us!` as you are doing now on here, bring up all the history you like the one thing your poor excuse of a team has never done is compete for as long as we have done in the top flight, and that's what counts. you always bring up the one season in the prem that you did ok as if its something to be proud of, if you had paid for it then it might have been. you are in your rightful place in English football and next season you will struggle again and will probably end up near or in the bottom 2. that's a direct result of your overspend and over achievement in the prem and the cup.
we are looking for new rivals because you are not worthy of being classed as our rivals, we wont play against you for years, if ever, and all that time you can look up the leagues at us in envy.

Same old cheating jibe get your facts right we won the cup 2008 without cheating under Sacha Gaydamak we went in our first administration in 2010 in the premier with difarent owners Sacha Gaydamak as sold club In August 2009

Pompey become first top-flight club in administration

Players have been paid late on four occasions this season, while the club is also involved in a separate dispute with former owner Sacha Gaydamak over whether they have missed a deadline in paying a £9m chunk of the £28m they owe him.

Without 2008 FA cup win we won the div 3 and the championship to your JPT since your cup win by a Pompey boy in 1976 !

A couple of new signings and we go top six. There are times to invest in a successful project and now is that time.

Seed second post in a row thst is spot on..We either draw a lin in the sand that states unequicably our 'intention' no probably's, maybe's and hopefully's but simple…

.."Southampton it's players, managers and staff are NOT for sale whatever the media try and say, if you do not hear it from my lips it a'int happening"

Now that is not so hard Ralph, ps I used to get paid a fortune seriously to train sales and marketing staff properly and as yet you are not remotely up to speed…jump to it man.

…also VERY IMPORTANT as long as the players we are looking at feel they may not be joining the star team they have seen or heard about we screw up there too with this wishy washy approach.

Without 2008 FA cup win we won the div 3 and the championship to your JPT since your cup win by a Pompey boy in 1976 !
so your proving my/our . SG spent a small arms dealers fortune, well his dads anyway, getting you into a false and unsustainable place in the prem. all the money was spent getting players on wages the club simply couldn't afford. whilst SG was their ploughing the money in you lot never questioned why or whether he would want it back and was in fact just lending the money to the club. you revelled in your small and brief success and when it came time to pay it back you turned on the man who funded it!
you brought the cup, you never won it!, in 08. SG sold the club a year later and wanted all his dads money back. so under SG you were running up huge debts that the club could never afford! which in todays prem wouldn't be allowed, you see the FFP rules were brought in to stop other clubs `doing a poopey` the prem do not want a club going bust again as its an embarrassment to the whole country!
you went into admin a year and a half after buying the cup, a direct result of over spending and not being able to pay he previous owner his money back, money that if you hadn't spent not only would you not have a cup but you wouldn't even had got into the prem. if you cant see that one led to the other then theres no help for you. all that money spent and you never brought a training ground or new stadium, the only thing you did was put a roof on one end of the shed, that's why no one wanted to buy you! no infrastructure and a crumbling old ground that's years past its sell by date and will soon become a new Lidl and poundstrechers.

keep looking up in envy to see how a club should be run, whilst we look down at you and laugh!

Yep. And stupid statements about our finances have led to the media assuming we need to sell to balance the books, and no doubt encourage other clubs to put in bids. Very naive.

Bumped into an old mate on Friday night. He's one of the biggest Saints fans I've ever known, goes to nearly every game home and away since the early seventies as a youngster. Surprisingly he said next season might be his last, he's renewing now to get the discount but if we do lose players and MoPo he's going to cool off. His logic is that if we don't take this opportunity to go for it then we never will. I see his point.

Do you understand this quite simple point yet?

Amen!
Pompey fan in peace !
I don't know but suspect you Saints fans are frightened to mutter the fact if Saints beat yes get 3 points against Manchester United you will actually finish higher than Pompey highest ever position in the Premier League God Forbid surly that would be something to cheer about after a unexpected run away up to third in the premier and then the slide down to eighth in the premier league and with the European Saints football talk with it ! then you lose cortesse and everything takes a nose dive and to cheer you disappointed fans up you fly a plane over Fratton with banner declaring nothing ?
But the fact the recent unexpected results and late run of good results you can end up higher than Pompey can they do it for once against a new under performing Man Utd ? hope not
Play up Pompey
Except for a string of unexpected results, Poopey would have been relegated this year. AGAIN!

Indeed. In fact the only difference between them and us is that they made - and still do - a strong of poor managerial decisions and we - and still do- made many good decisions. We both backed up our decisions with money. We bought good people and made wise investments which have justified our results. They had to plough more money after bad decisions and the results have been justified. So you see, we are not that far apart - only a few leagues and a whole lot of pride!

Do you understand this quite simple point yet?

AGAIN!
Isn't it funny to see them so full of it due to maintaining their league 2 status!
And Osvaldo then who s good decision was that ? with the England stars hanging on a thread to stay at SAINTS and not to sold on by miss liebhurr and Poch also going in the Summer .
Pompey last game attracted 18025 div 2 not playing for anything Saints at Swansea 20682 not much of a difference how many did you get in league 1 less I believe .

You wern't playing for anythng you are right. It was more a collective sigh of relief that you just managed to avoid yet another embarrassment to follow on from all your other recent embarrassments. That's why you are so widely known amongst all football fans as the embarrassment of the south. The Osvaldo decision may well turn out to be a mistake. But hey, we can afford it. We've probably just wasted enough money to buy your shabby little outfit 10 times over. And the reason we can afford it is that we currently have around £60-70 million pounds worth of academy gaduates in our first team squad who cost us nothing. And we also, as I'm sure you know , are the 8th best team in the most difficult league in the world and we turn over in excess of £100 million pounds per season. That's also why we don't give a hoot about all your trophies won in the middle ages and why we didn't even bother to put out a strong side in the competition you hold so much store by. We have bigger and better thing to look forward to.

I think that's very unfair on one of the worst referees ever to officiate. All he was trying to do was make himself the centre of attention and deflect away any interest in the match. It's what he always does so why should anybody be surprised. Seriously though the more complaints about him the better. Eventually somebody will have to take notice and get rid.

He could be sent to permanently referee at Fratton Park.

And so the endless mirror selling of our players continues with lalla now said to be on spuds target list. they are supposed to be considering offering Andros townsend plus cash to `tempt us`. we are apparently `keen` on townsend! but the mirror say the deal is unlikely to happen because lalla is set to join diverpool.
why would we be interested in townsend? he did ok at the start of the season but was very over rated as a result of his goal for England, since then he has picked up injury after injury, couldn't get back into the spuds team and is now injured again and not likely to go to the world cup.
why are the mirror so keen to sell lalla to diverpool? and why would he want to go there. there are rumours that suarez is on his way out so they aren't going to be the team they were.
lastly, unless the deal to sell lalla has been done since les reeds statement (so just over a week) why are the mirror and fail so set on ignoring the statement from the club? I can understand why les reed looked so fed up and frustrated whilst making the statement and why MP just laughs off any transfer rumour questions and just talks about the game.

You are right of course. How could we be so stupid. Could you just remind us the list of top players that Chelsea and ManC have cashed in on and how much their billionaire owners have taken out of the club. Good luck with holding on to your top players as well. Who are they and who exactly are the teams queueing up to get them? Please only give us names that we have heard of.

I fail to see how going out in round one of the EUFA cup is considered an achievement.... in fact I think it's quite indicative of the Skates that they think a draw is one of their greatest achievements.

mind you I don't look at the world through a fish eye lens.

@ blue - your endless dribbling about trophies and such really is quite irrelevant. In fact it always strikes me that as soon as you or any skate start on about trophies or crowd numbers it's because you've lost the argument. Monumentally dull.
you need to change the record sunshine

But your missing the point the only reason the fans own the club is because no one else would but it after more than a year in administration lots of clubs have owners .other than clubs in the champions league like chelsea man city ect ,but the others who have dont cheat status to stay in that league you do talk nonsense yet again .you are going nowhere supposed to be favorites to win league 2 you nearly went out of the league .we have sold players before while at the dell while we had 15.000 but because we were not cheating status we just found players like lundekvam at lower prices and others like jason dodd we kept in the top league and will do again .with the owners we have they dont pay wages we take loans off them and then pay them back in full like the stmarys stadium loan .and now have one for staplewood which is ongoing now ,they dont operate like the set up your directors set up at your place .im afraid there is no comparison so save your breath and time .remember should you ever get near the top league your fans will have to sell to a owner if it becomes worth buying as you have no assets it is not at the moment .that is the reason why your fans own the club .wake up to reality this is the real world suffering bluewhiteinred
