Michael Owen: Southampton's Luke Shaw is ready to join 'a really big club'

Daily Echo: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Former England and Manchester United striker Michael Owen is confident Luke Shaw is ready for the challenge of playing for a "really big club."

United are trying to sign 18-year-old Saints defender Shaw, who has been included in England boss Roy Hodgson's squad for this summer's World Cup, having tabled a £27m bid earlier this week.

The left-back already has over 50 Barclays Premier League starts and a senior international cap to his name.

And when asked about the prospect of Shaw joining United, Owen, who made such a memorable impact at the 1998 World Cup as an 18-year-old, told the Press Association: "It's always good to keep progressing up the ladder and to play at the highest standard.

"And once you have had the experience that Luke Shaw has had in the Premier League, you are certainly ready for that challenge now.

"Having had the first-team experience he has, and now going to a World Cup, I'd say he is more than ready to join a really big club - if Southampton let him go."

He is already at a really 'big' club Mr Owen! - Southampton. Why would he want to go to a one time 'big' club like Manchester United? They can't offer any more "big time" next season than Saints.

Why would he go to a club not playing European football, when he can stay with a club not playing European football. Great player but needs to learn his trade a bit more. And he may be worth twice as much after the world cup !

Why would he go to a club that will finish behind Saints next season ?
Michael you were a good player but you have been influenced by all the media and hype that Saints are selling our top young stars, Saints are more financially stable than Manure and have a young squad that we just need 3 good players for not a whole team to replace their ageing squad.
If you leave Saints players and manager alone we will be able to mix among the top 6 next season, or is that what is that what you and all the top clubs are worried about so are hell bent on breaking our squad up.

I would welcome a really good story in the DE where they would have interviewed all the papers trying so hard to break up our team and who are trying to get our manager to chuck in a very good job and where he has been so successful. Ask them whether they just made the stories up, perhaps. Strange their seems nothing today on the back pages.

Ask them if they even listened to Les Reed's statement and if so why none of them reported it. Ask them why are they, frankly, being so absurd trying to transfer almost every player in our first team. Ask them just to think it through before wasting all their newsprint. Tell 'em we do not like it, not one bit do we like it! All the team? It's nuts, just grow up.

Also, guys like Michael Owen and Alan Hansen - even ask them and others to butt out. Just think about all the proper fans down here who they are upsetting with all this floss.

Thanks Osprey for pointing out the transfer window does not even start until July. I did not know that. Do the papers? If so, they are really stuck for stories. It also explains, perhaps, the silence from the Board. Hope so, guys.

Sorry Osprey I'd love your comment re: the transfer window to be correct but I did some digging and I'm getting some contradictory information....Did you get that info from a Daily Mockturd (Mirror, not Mail although the same could apply) article?

I did a little search and the article that came up was the article on the DM's website.

There is also a mention of this via the wikipedia article on transfer windows. It confirms that the transfer window in England does officially open on July 1st, although transfers can take place following the final competitive fixture of the season. - Some deals may however not be completed until July 1st due to contracts that expire on June 30th.

Further to this, I did dug a bit further and the official Premier League website states this:

"There are two transfer windows in each Barclays Premier League season.

The first commences at midnight on the last day of the season and ends on 31 August if a working day - or, if not, on the first working day thereafter, at a time determined by the Board.

The second transfer window commences at midnight on the 31 December and ends on the 31 January if a working day, and again, if not, on the first working day thereafter, at a time determined by the Board."

Tell me I've missed something, as I'd love a good nights sleep!?

- Is the transfer window being treated differently this year due to the World Cup??

With Poch In charge and a healthy war chest I think we are capable of breaking into that Europa league, second tier of the Premiership.

How many articles does the DE have to write about Shaw going to Brazil? It's getting boring now! His selection has been ruined by the Sun yesterday printing a story about Hodgson saying he'd probably made a mistake in the selection and that if Baines gets injured in the games prior to the World Cup he'd probably call upon Cole!!!! I hope I'm wrong but I don't see Shaw playing in the World Cup as Stuart Pearce said on Talksport recently developmentally wise it would have been better for Shaw to have played for the under 21s against Wales next Monday and to have gone to the Toulon tournament!!!!

Fact . . . . . . . Michael Owen and many other media people are full of only rumours and hot air about the imminent transfers of any of our Saints players or Mauricio Pochettino.

Fact . . . . . . . It is very much in the realms of possibility that those other football clubs which are seriously interested in signing Mauricio or any of our players might unsettle them through their friends in the media as much as they can.

Mauricio's new contract with Saints will probably take a little while to be agreed and signed. This is not unusual. The club's directors and manager all know he is a hot property at the moment, so I'm sure there is or soon will be some bargaining happening, not least because Mauricio wants to know if the club has a new plan for the way forward. I think Mauricio will get such an assurance from the club.

Fact . . . . . . . Mauricio would do well to consider that recent managers of Tottenham Hotspur tend to be sacked by Daniel Levy.

Fact . . . . . . . Southampton FC will continue to conduct its transfer business in its usual, private way, no different from in the past. Fans and media will be informed only after deals are done. This is the only sensible course of action.

Fact . . . . . . . If any of our Saints players play well at the World Cup in Brazil, their transfer price will considerably increase. This is obviously old news to their agents!

What we know right now is that our Saints players are happy at the club and so is their manager.

If the media have their way, our already smallish squad will be half as big during the summer. This is not, however, a time to panic. Southampton FC is no longer a club which has to sell its players to bigger clubs to balance its financial books. Those days are gone. I trust Katharina, Ralph, Les and Mauricio to look at the bigger picture and take the club forward to the next level. They have never let the club nor we fans down. We already have new main sponsors in place, obviously paying more money than the outgoing main sponsors. The club is conducting such business in a timely manner. Transfer business will also be done at appropriate times and to the club's benefit.

And here is a message for Michael Owen about how Manchester United are a bigger club than Saints. Fact . . . . . . . Manchester United are 351.7 million pounds in debt!!! I found this out today!

Fact . . . . . . . It will be a long, hard summer for we Saints fans if we believe all the media hype about all our good players and manager leaving the club. I won't believe any story until it becomes fact. We have had five great seasons in a row. I trust ultimate shareholder, Katharina, along with chairman and directors to give us great season number six for the 2014/2015 season, with Mauricio still managing!!!

I am going to have a great summer watching all our Saints players who will be on World Cup duty for their countries in Brazil. I'll support them all, especially if they play for England!

What a season we have had. What a summer we have to look forward to. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's great to be a Saints fan, thanks to Saint Marcus and Katharina! Thanks to them both for rescuing Saints from the dark days and giving we fans all this excitement. If I didn't know better, I might think I had died and gone to football Heaven!!!

The Rise of The Foot Soldier. says...

If SFC sorted out the Dani situation and spent 30mill on a top scoring striker - then up the Premier league we would go.

Keep all our players - add a Keeper and CB - then we are ready for an assault with the no limits and aim for the top of the premier league.

European Football would surely follow and all our players all want that. To be part of something big.

We are as big as our ambitions.
If SFC sorted out the Dani situation and spent 30mill on a top scoring striker - then up the Premier league we would go. Keep all our players - add a Keeper and CB - then we are ready for an assault with the no limits and aim for the top of the premier league. I hadn't realised that the actual Transfer Window doesn't start until July 1st. So why the furore to name who is going where so soon?

We did sign JRod in June don't forget, I assumed the Window opened at midnight on the 12th May after the last game, but there has been very little movement anywhere, so it is all a bit confusing. As you say it may be down to Contracts, no doubt there will be plenty of spurious rumours to keep us on our toes until there is some definitive action. Of course there is still lower League play offs going on so I guess we will have wait until they are done and dusted.

Fact . . . . . .

Excellent post
I do think that the established top 6 or 7 clubs are worried about saints next season as so are fueling the media to unsettle and break our squad up.
Hope to see them all have egg on their faces when we add to the squad without loosing any of our young stars.

Precisely. People are getting so het up by rumour and bol1ocks. Why let it get to you? Last time I checked the board hadn't sold anyone so why read the worst into everything? All I see from Owen's comments are a huge compliment about one of our players.

Judge this board after the summer. Until then, why not spend time thinking about people in your life who you actually love and whose happiness you can really affect?

It seems there are some people posting on here who would rather believe supposition, rumours and all the rest of the media hype designed to unsettle Southampton FC, rather than the facts.

I therefore have some more facts for you!

Fact . . . . . . . Southampton FC is not run by idiots. Do you seriously reckon the club would sell Adam or Luke for lower transfer fees before the World Cup than they could get afterwards? If Rickie, Adam or Luke play well in Brazil, their transfer fees will increase. Saints have no financial need to sell any of their good players, of course. The great thing is that the players are happy at Southampton FC, with the exception of Dani Osvaldo. No player is bigger than the club.

Fact . . . . . . . Football agents and players are not stupid. The agents of Rickie, Adam and Luke obviously know that if these players play well in Brazil, there will be much more money to be made by the players, agents and Southampton FC than could be made before the World Cup gets under way.

Here endeth the lesson for those naive people who believe all the media rumours and nonsense. None of what these journalists write is actually based on any facts or logic. It is all only supposition. They just sit on their backsides and trot out all their rumours because they never have anything much of substance left to write or comment about after the football season ends. All you worriers and doom mongers out there seem to prefer to believe all that journalistic garbage rather than facts and logic.

The Premier League season ended only four days ago and already all you negative so called Saints fans are believing garbage over substance.

Reality check . . . . . . . Mauricio and our players are still at Southampton FC!!!

That is spot on. So to clarify the fact is that what is being quoted as a fact is in fact not a fact at all. And the quote that he is just facing reality is in fact not facing reality at all because the fact is that it hasn't a really happened. Fact.

Life is great . . . . . . . I'm a Saints fan!!!
It really is incredible how all the doom mongers out there seem to think that the people who own and run the club are out to destroy it. They have actually inherited a pretty tricky situation and it really would be great if we could hold on to every one of our players who have given us such a fantastic season. That may well prove to be tricky but I'm sure most sensible fans out there realise that there is plenty going on behind the scenes and that they are doing everything possible to do the best they can for the club . And they are doing it, as normal, behind closed doors. Why would they be doing anything else?

So, what you're saying is that Roy got a wee bit confused between two completely different people - Luke Shaw and Ashley Cole.

That would be really, really dumb. A bit like, for instance, if I were to get confused between you and, say, Redandy10.

well I`ve just heard a transfer IN rumour! I know shocking isn't it.
well here goes..........
Kasper the friendly keeper has agreed a 4yr deal to join saints on a free from Leicester city.
well now we know what formation `insert new managers name here` will be playing next season, 3in goal AB, kasper and gazza, 2, in defence clyne and fonte, 3 in midfield, Big Vic, Gaston and Cork, and 1 up front Big Sam. I know this leaves us short but I didn't think whatever manager we have will trust hoover or Yoshi, and as the media have sold the rest of the squad and made MP the spuds manager, well only if he pays us £2mill and gets £9mill from spuds and of course speaks English, that's about all we have left!

You're obviously correct that much is going on behind the scenes at Southampton FC. well here goes..........
Is that a fact?

If there is any truth in this maybe we start getting some answers soon.

The suspense is causing me the sort of anxieties which could lead me to kicking the cat or something really socially undesirable of a similar nature. There is a nun along our road who hasn't been run over recently maybe I'll start there..

Fact . . . . . .

Fact: MP is off to Spurs

Fact:Lallana is off to Liverpool

Fact: Shaw is off to Manure

Fact: Don't believe everything you here from the club or from the players!
Why are you so full of doom and gloom about our Saints? The sun is shining and it's a lovely new day. The birds are singing in the trees and it will be a nice weekend. Quite a few of our Saints players have been selected to go to Brazil and we Saints fans have never had it so good. Other clubs want our players and manager like never before. Players at other clubs probably want more than ever before to play for Saints. So please do yourself a favour and smell the roses, not the journalistic bull manure we see in the media. Please try to relax and ignore the doom mongers. Southampton FC really is in safe hands.

Has MP signed for Spurs yet?

Has Lallana signed for Liverpool yet?

Has Shaw signed for Man U yet?

Question . . . . . . . What has another new day brought us?

Answer . . . . . . . No change!

I am a glass half full person in all things. There are trustworthy, professional people running Southampton FC and for five years the club has had unprecedented success and risen quickly up the football ladder. I am therefore optimistic for next season. I am confident that most, possibly all of our best players will still be with Saints next season.

Have you ever considered supporting Pompey? Please don't worry, I'm only joking! Lol!

We did sign JRod in June don't forget, I assumed the Window opened at midnight on the 12th May after the last game, but there has been very little movement anywhere, so it is all a bit confusing. As you say it may be down to Contracts, no doubt there will be plenty of spurious rumours to keep us on our toes until there is some definitive action. Of course there is still lower League play offs going on so I guess we will have wait until they are done and dusted.
Clubs can buy domestic players again once they have played their final game of the season. International deals can go through from 10 June. According to BBC Sport Football site
