Saints trio 'can be World Cup stars'

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

All three of Saints’ England stars have the ability to make a serious impact at the World Cup, according to Francis Benali.

The former left-back described the call-ups for Rickie Lambert, pictured right, Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw as a proud moment for both the club and the city.

And he believes each of them has the capacity to shine in Brazil.

“Most definitely,” he said. “We’ve seen all of them play already.

“Rickie scored with his first touch on his debut, Adam seemed to just seamlessly flit onto the international stage as well as he does at domestic level, and Luke didn’t look fazed by it when he made his debut, so I see no reason why none of them shouldn’t have an impact or have any doubts about appearing at any stage of the competition really.”

Speaking about their selections, Benali added: “It’s fully justified. Their performances have been outstanding, all three of them this season, and for longer as well.

“Rickie and Adam have been doing it for some time now, and Luke’s come onto the scene and just blown everyone away with his ability and his matureness for someone so young.

“Luke has got so much going for him at a young age. He can defend, not many players go by him easily, if at all, and he is an attacking threat as well, which is the modern-day full-back.

“He shows maturity beyond his years, considering the amount of football he has played so far.

“I think his all-round game for such a young player is so strong.”

Francis Benali is so right. Rickie, Adam and Luke deserve to go to Brazil with England. They can all enhance their reputations at international level, giving themselves and Southampton FC a boost on the world stage.

As a Saints fan, I think this is a very exciting time for all at Southampton FC and for its supporters. I look forward to more exciting times long into the future.

What we are still seeing is that current Saints players are, more than ever before, being selected for their national teams at all levels. In fact it seems that Southampton FC is the place to be!

barring injury I think Luke will see the least game time, baines is still the obvious first choice even after he made to look poor by the mighty saints at sms recently.
Lalla must be a starter and SRL will come on after shrek gives up and blames the fans!
all of them are stars already, luke and lalla will go on to play for the national side for many more tournaments to come.
proud to see all of our stars playing for their countries in the world cup, though I am especially happy and proud that SRL got the call. He has shown to all young players that if you work hard and don't give up anything can happen!

All the more reason to keep them at Saints at least for one more season.
Enhances Saints reputation, would not be as good being there as a player from another Club.
They only signed extended contracts last season to be part of Saints progression so no reason to get off yet as it is still moving on. They have international recognition, stay at Saints at least one more season to see if the progression continues.
