Shockwaves after Saints sackings

Luke Shaw has said he is “gutted” after Saints legend and youth coach Jason Dodd was sacked along with Paul Williams.

Dodd, who made more than 450 appearances for the club as a player, was dismissed from his role as coach of the under-18 side.

Williams worked alongside Dodd and was also given the axe as Saints ring the changes in the club’s youth set-up.

The club have refused to comment on the sackings due to ongoing legal proceedings, meaning the official reason remains a mystery.

The Daily Echo understands the decisions were football related and not to do with Mauricio Pochettino’s future or any desire for the manager to bring in his own people.

It is likely therefore that the ultimate decision was taken by Les Reed, pictured right, who has an overview of all football related matters at St Mary’s.

Shock There was widespread shock at St Mary’s as the news filtered out, and that included Shaw who was one of several players to come through the youth ranks under Dodd and quickly into the first team.

Such was Shaw’s shock at the decision that he took to Twitter from England’s pre-World Cup training camp in Portugal to say: “Gutted for doddsy and Willo, helped me a lot in my development over the years, wish them all the best in their careers.”

Worrying Many will see Shaw’s statement as hugely worrying given that the club need to convince him to remain at St Mary’s in the face of a £25m offer for his services from Manchester United.

Dodd and Williams, who was part of Gordon Strachan’s Saints squad that finished eighth in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final in 2003, also ushered Calum Chambers, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed and Sam Gallagher through the youth set-up and into Pochettino’s first team ranks.

The team finished sixth in the under-18 Premier League last season.

Saints are expected to make fresh appointments to replace the pair in due course.

If the interview that Les Reed did a few weeks ago, then nothing is done on the football side basically without MP's input. So either MP has had a say or the club is in total dissarray and at the moment the latter seems to be the case. With an avalanche of comment being thrown at Saints daily across the whole media and Saints not making any move to quell them, then fans have a right to be very concerned.

If MoPo doesn't sign and we go for Garcia or Di Matteo that just about confirms the ambition of this club and that they want nothing more than to sell our best players and install a cheap manager. If we have offered MoPo £6m and spurs are only looking to pay £3m and he goes, then it shows there isn't money there to invest in strengthening the squad. Sort it out saints, this is turning in to a circus!!

All we can do is guess the reason or reasons for the departures of such great servants to Southampton FC as Jason and Paul. I hope they both find even better jobs in football. There might be a Premier League club that will value their expertise and knowledge of how to run a top notch youth production line, so their services might well be required. Thank you and good luck to Jason and Paul.

It does not take a genius to work that one out.

IMHO the team results have not been brilliant although they have coached individuals well to come through to the first team.
Let's hope the next two ex pro's do their jobs well as we have the best academy in the UK.

Each day goes by it just confirms what a class act Cortese was. This board confirm their lack of leadership daily. In fighting is a classic state when poor leadership is in place. People wanting credit work, others what power. Cortese would not have put up with this. Each day when we could be signing key players for key positions and the constant, relentless media, agent campaign to unsettle payers with greener pastures, help make up minds of the unsure.

I'm sure that they were sacked for good reasons; if they were any good, why sack them, unless something unprofessional happened?
I can't see how this would lead to Shaw deciding to leave
Saints. He's a first-teamer now anyway and his role involves playing, not managing.

The D.E. is doing its very best to de-stabilise Saints with continual
negativity. The Board has already commented through Les Reed. We don't want to sell, but if a player insists on leaving and the price is right, then the exit door is open as it would be at any club. I feel sorry for our Board at the moment what with MoPo dragging his heels over a contract extension.
MoPo staying is no guarantee that Lallana and/or Shaw will stay. If one of them were to leave, I'd prefer it were Shaw, but the odds are that Shaw will stay and Lallana by virtue of his relatively advanced years will be tempted by instant Champs League football with the Reds. Nothing will sensibly happen until after the World Cup, so the Board keeping quiet makes sense.

Whatever happens, SFC is bigger than any player or manager - we are The Mighty Saints.

Enough.

Being in the dark about what is happening re Potch etc is bad enough without the DE continually stoking the fires below. OK, they know no more than we do (and obviously don't have the ability or contacts to find out) but that is no excuse for this continual stirring.

All we know is that Dodd etc have lost their jobs, perhaps by mutual consent and after lengthy negotiations and for good reasons. Yet the DE spin is to give the impression they have been unceremoniously and unfairly sacked. Why? Are we to believe that the Board, which now has some fairly experienced professional people on it, have deliberately taken a course of action that will lead to a tribunal and damaging headlines? Unlikely.

And as for the "shockwaves" regarding Shaw's comments etc - what utter tosh. All he's said is that he's gutted about Dodd no longer working at the club which is perfectly natural and understandable. Talk about building the Himalayas out of mouse droppings.

As someone commented yesterday, the DE has nothing positive to say and so are clearly choosing to spread rumour and disenchantment at every opportunity so that we'll keep their advertisers happy by keep coming on here and posting exasperated comments.

Ha, as if we'd fall for that trick ...........

My money is on Pochettino; Shaw & Lallana on long contracts so they will honour those; JRod will be back; Osvaldo will be gone; we will sign three players. A world class keeper, another centre back and the goalscorer we sadly lack that finishes everything we create!!

Continuation . . . . . . .

When Nicola Cortese sacked people, he tended to replace them with people he considered even better. I guess the football business is like that these days. Katharina and her board of directors are in the football business and are making what they believe are the best decisions for Saints.

I think we can now see that there is determination at Southampton FC to continue the club's upward momentum. Players have already been released by the club and will, no doubt, be replaced with even better players. Saints are striving for improvement, so this sort of thing is to be expected. It is a fact that there is little room for sentiment at this level of football and that much has to do with opinion.

Things are happening at St. Marys and we fans can only ever expect to learn about them after the events. I'm hoping for a few pleasant surprises from Saints during the summer. At least we can be thankful for the distraction of the World Cup!

Actually it's a report of an interview with Nicola. It says it's the first interview he's given since he left us in January. That seems true, I've looked for press coverage of him from time to time to see if he's associated with a new club or other business venture, and there's been nothing at all about him on the web for months. Very interesting that he's broken his silence now.

3/4 year contract and keeping players that have developed well these last few seasons should keep us in good stead for the push for European places.

A few points to counter yours:

1. Cortese regularly sacked people without explanation. Also refused to speak to the media most of the time, so I don't see how the new regime is much less 'classy'.

I've just read Cortese article there isn't anything he said that wasn't new, what I do not understand is after all the hype with the ambitions of the Club why would it now be the time to stop and go sideways or downwards, the progression has be phenomenal and wonderful for everyone who loves Southampton FC and there's only one 2 directions onwards and upwards .

Someone threw a Spanner in the works to disrupt the happiness and the ambitions of the Club several weeks ago, it started with Luke going then Adam then MP, is there a Mole in the Club who's releasing facts to the media? we are totally fed up to the tops of our heads with this uncertainty, no other Club in the Premiership has been hassled like Southampton, there seems to be a collection of many who are jealous of Southampton FC success and want to stop the progress to prevent them being a top Club, who and why are they trying to hold the Club back and keep tightening the reins? If all these rumours turn out to be true and we all hope it doesn't what will happen to the next Manager if he too keeps up the progress? Southampton will never be able to sustain class Players and Managers.
I just wish it would come out whatever it is because there's not a day goes by where I do not think about it like all the thousands of Fans, I am on my Laptop from the time I sit down in the mornings and constantly go to the Daily Echo and BBC news throughout the day, it is very frustrating and I really hope it's not the worse news I will hear, we all want MP to sign an extension to his Contract and all the Players are staying for him the Supporters and the Club

That's is clearly all lies as I've not seen a word of it mentioned in the Daily Mail by Martin Samuel.
I disagree. Its really good to have some truthful reporting for a change. It just goes to show that with a little bit of effort the facts can be reported correctly. I'm really worried now though. If St Marys has been destroyed where are we going to be playing at next season.

You're not doing yourself any favours Malcombe, by going on these websites for news and winding yourself up! The official Saints site is the only place for news, anything else should be treated as b0llox. Don't take my word for it, go to the BBC site and read the story they wrote in January about Cortese leaving the club. It will put things in perspective for you, then ... relax.
The Club have said nothing because there is nothing to say. If they made statements to counteract every story , the media would make up more just for the response in a self fulfilling merry-go-round.

I think Saints are not media savvy enough yet for the top half of te BPL..
We clearly need a top spin doctor, because they are being used against us quite well to unsettle our players.

Cheer up Malcombe. Suarez is off to Real Madrid, Yaya Toure is leaving Citeh as he only got a cake from the sheiks for his birthday. Big Sam promises entertaining football, the skunts are going to rip up Division 4 .... AGAIN.

Only panic when the button is pushed and so far the finger on the button isn't pressing down. No one will be sold before the WC, it's bad business, for instance Adam has a stonker, wins the golden boots his value increases by a million, on the other hand someone (God forbid one of ours) gets cruciate knee damage at the WC and is out 2 years the buying club has a crock on their hands for the next 2 years. It just isn't gonna happen yet.

It is strange that no Official announcement has been issued by the Club about the "sackings", I don't doubt it is true, but could it be for legal reasons that they cannot name names for the moment?
They've already said they can't comment for legal reasons.
Yes, indeed, perhaps it is down to a claim of unfair dismissal or has there been something untoward going on? Intriguing.
The Independent claim that Doddy and Willo didn't spend enough of their time with the players, seems a bit odd, the work at Staplewood was probably getting in the way of training may be? Very puzzling.

This is welcome and frankly about time too.

Today on page 76 and under a heading " Shaw dismay at Saints sackings" the article upsets me a lot.

Half way through it says "The left back, who is leaving this summer, said it was the wrong decision to sack the popular pair"........

Further down it reports again "Shaw is leaving Southampton when he returns from the World Cup with England and captain Adam Lallana has also made it clear he is quitting the club when he returns from South America. Dejan Lovren, who was outstanding in his first season with Southampton, will agitate to leave if they start selling their best players."

The only bit of this with which I agree is that Dejan was OUTSTANDING - even an understatement, perhaps.

So this is making me a very unhappy bunny at the moment and whilst I welcome the optimism of lots of you super Saints' fans, I await with much hope that the statement referred to here, will put things straight. We have too much journalism and I think I am right when I say - we just want to know what's going on! PLEASE.

If Adam Blackmore is correct (and he does talk to the players) I am very worried by what is going on.. He has said on Twitter that :-

1/ (talking about Luke & Adam) " as far as I'm concerned they're as good as gone now - just details to be sorted - can't blame them for ambition".

2/ " The club will struggle to keep Lallana & Shaw as we know - and I was told Liverpool made a firm bid for Lovren of 15M which was rejected"

3/ "A number of #saintsfc players feel they can't get answers they want off those in boardroom - that's what they've told me" and then "more than half a team" when asked how many."

It seems from those comments that the Players have lost faith with Ralph & Co about the direction of the Club.

Trying to force unhappy players to stay will not work and selling "more than half a team" will end in Relegation and reduce Kat's asset greatly from £120m- £200m to almost worthless (running The Stadium + Academy in the Championship will fail).

I know this will get me a lot of thumbs down from certain posters but I believe there is only one man who can change the mind of the players (& manager) and he gave an interview to the BBC today

Wow. This is a little over the top don't you think?

A few points to counter yours:

1. Cortese regularly sacked people without explanation. Also refused to speak to the media most of the time, so I don't see how the new regime is much less 'classy'.

2. 'In fighting'? Where's the evidence of that? There's been little communication from the club so how do we know anyone's 'fighting'?

3. 'People wanting credit work'? Where's the evidence of that?

4. 'Others power'? Again, where's the evidence that this is a problem?

5. 'Could be signing key players'? Have many other premier league clubs signed new players yet? Are we falling behind in the race for new talent? I don't think anyone's signed anyone of any real class yet have they?
The board since Cortese has gone.
1) Did not bring in any players in the last transfer window, attacking and goalkeeping would have given potentially 15 plus points. games against Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City. Liverpool etc with Gazza in goal, is like throwing the ball in the net twice before you have kicked off. And when JRod was injured we had nothing left on the bench to make an impact. I know you cannot always stick your hand in the pocket and spend.

2) Les Reed should not be addressing the media. Les is a good guy, but this a chairmans job.

3) The Manager and many players must be losing confidence daily. A constant campaign to take our players. Nothing from the board. Cortese was hard, so what, people respect that if it is done with the club in mind.

4) Cortese said little, but it stuck.

5) Credit for a job done, not done, you need to read a little to understand why are two key coaches going where players are missing under 21 games. If it ain't broke... When the media light is on how well Saints are doing, someone will/may want credit.

6) Lack of vision; the board so far have done little to tell the players, media, fans about our ambition. MoPo has said the current 5 year plan is over, we must now start a new one. Vision, stadium development, youth development, first team ambitions, what would happen if.... There is no if plan.

A lot of this uncertainty has been caused by MP refusing to discuss a new contract, whilst the season was still being played.

I am also concerned by Blackmore's comments, but am even more concerned that, having been one to say "give the board time", they are being made to look like uncaring, indecisive mugs, not just by the media, but by MP's reluctance, at anytime, to still the rumours.

If the board are still trying to persuade MP to extend his contract , and he is refusing, for any reason, then IMO, their only option is to replace him.
Maybe this is what he is angling for, bearing in mind the penalty clause in his contract, should HE initiate his own departure?

Decisive action needs to be taken, with all players told that no one goes anywhere, without the approval of MP, or his replacement should he not extend his contract.

Why are comments like this continually getting thumbs down. The truth hurts but you have to accept it. When cortese was here we was only moving in one direction, forwards and upwards. Now he's gone it seems like we're just going downhill with constant speculation. Why wasn't there constant speculation when cortese was at the club? It's simply because there was nothing to speculate about except for players we may be looking to bring in. Now he's gone there is uncertainty surrounding so many issues. These include Mopo's contract, players leaving the club, arguably no vision or ambition, unconvincing comments and statements from Ralph, unfortunately I could go on!

'Why wasn't there speculation when Cortese was at the club?' Quick answer is THERE WAS. If you look back in the Echo archives you'll see numerous articles linking our players with other clubs when Cortese was here, and he said nothing in the media about them either.

The only difference I can see in this instance is HINDSIGHT. We now know that none of our players were sold when Cortese was here, but we don't yet know that none of our players will be sold under the current regime - but what's the difference?

Cortese clearly states in his interview that he couldn't see any way forward with Katherina Liebherr. I wonder why that was. Why did Markus have to die! If cortese could have stayed I truly believe the only speculation would be players we are looking to bring in and that Mopo's contract would have been sorted a long time ago. All the top teams want our players including Shaw, Lovren, Lallana, schneiderlain, Chambers, Rodriguez, Wanyama and they're all under 26. Keep them all together and we could be a top team ourselves. We almost already are. Cortese knew this but the question is, does the current board? Do they realise the potential of the team and the financial rewards the team would bring into the club.

Good point well made,Steve.
The death of Markus, and its subsequent consequences,is the "elephant in the room", which we are all afraid to bring up,out of respect for the man, and the legacy which he left us with, but it was the unforseen catalyst, which created a fork in the road, which meant that the club has been travelling down a slightly different track, ever since.
Still, there is no such thing as" what might have been",only reality.

1, the `board` were not in place during the Jan window, Ralph only started on March 12th, over 2 months after the window closed, so cant really blame them for no transfers. also MP said he was happy with the squad.

2. Les should be addressing the media, he is responsible for whats being spoken about. RK, the chairman, has also addressed the media more than once and has said the same thing. it doesn't mater how many times they say it, or who says it, the media wont listen. you have to ask yourself why.

3. why are the players losing confidence? surely all the players who are away with their countries have other things on their minds and they, along with every other player have agents to worry for them. the players and manager will know a hell of a lot more than we do and as 2 of them have said, they wont ask for moves whatever happens will be up to the club, doesn't sound like they are losing confidence. NC was a hard nosed banker, no pun intended, who ran the club his way. yes people respect what he has done for the club, but don't forget, along with all the good there was plenty of bad, newspaper bans, photographer bans, dragging the clubs good name through the courts more than once and there are a lot more alleged misuses o clubs funds. fans wont put up with the club being made to look bad for too long, he got away with it because of the rise of the club.

4. NC said very little, we have had more from the current board in 2 1/2 months than in the last year under NC. The current board cant win though can they, say nothing and people say its a sign of weakness, respond to every rumour and again its shows weakness. NC said nothing about transfers and got lauded for it, the current board are doing the same and people are moaning the aren't like NC.

5. don't really understand that one but am guessing your on about the two `sackings` that we have heard about. if it aint broke don't fix it, agree but we know nothing about why the decision has been made so cant really comment on whether it was the correct decision or not.

6. The board has told us that they want to continue to progress as a club and finish higher next season than this, they cant say much more until a new vision has been agreed with MP, perhaps that's whats being discussed at the moment. the players will hear of the vision and what it entails before we do and when its complete. the players are however either away on international duty or on holidays, so they probably wont all be phoned up to tell them individually and instead will probably learn everything when they are back together for preseason training. there is always a plan, good or bad, no company with revenues and turnover as big as ours will not have a plan.

keep calm and don't panic. nothings going to happen for a while so theres point worrying about things that might or might not ever happen.

I have supported NC from the start, but the piece he did with the BBC wasn't exactly helpful. There's one of two angles he could be playing, revenge or to pressure the new board to do everything in their power to keep Poch and the lads. I hope it's the latter, but I doubt it.

It doesn't take away from what he did for the club. Getting rid of Nigel in the face of the huge rube support Nigel enjoyed, as well as a press out to paint him as a maniacal git took huge guts. He'll always walk on water for that one, because ignoring the wishes of the majority resulted in us getting the great Poch.

But deciding to start squawking now, when we are fighting to keep our talent, is a little strange to say the least. At the same time he does seem to be tooting his own horn, a quality which is never too endearing!!!

Keep quiet Poch!

Also heard that Jason needed time out to look after his Dad Ken, who has been ill ?

All the top teams want our players including Shaw, Lovren, Lallana, schneiderlain, Chambers, Rodriguez, Wanyama and they're all under 26. Keep them all together and we could be a top team ourselves. We almost already are. Cortese knew this but the question is, does the current board? Do they realise the potential of the team and the financial rewards the team would bring into the club.
It is simple. The risk of selling is higher than the risk of investing.

The money in the bank from selling must be used to cover losses as we decline.

The money expended through investment will appreciate as we advance.

We are the envy of the Top 6 and they are trying to rip us apart off the field. Keep the team together and we will rip them apart on it.

I hope the board sees all this.

I know I was rubbish at chemistry at school, but an "unforeseen catalyst, which created a fork in the road" is something a bit special & maybe even a miracle of modern times!

Apparently one of Lallas `best mate` has been tweeting tonight and told a diverpool fan who said he had £100 at 7/2 that lalla would join them `prepare yourself to lose it mate!!`
the diverpool fan then asked why does he want to stay when we are losing our manager to spuds,
Lallas `mate` replied `saints through and through`

I have no idea if this guy is Lallas mate at all, but if true it sound good.

There will be no announcements coming out of St Marys till all of those season tickets have been renewed.

We need clarity to help us all sooner the better
Its frustrating mate but understand that the media, ex-players and even the Prrem and FA themselves are all very staid in their perceptions and vision of how the football hierarchy should be. It's ridiculous really that they don't see how boring the Premier league is if the same teams win over and over again. All the press and tv coverage is geared toward the top clubs. The arrogance is beyond belief and if you attempt to fight this you are constantly putting out fires. Tbf Swansea fans are probably p1ssed off too as press rumours point to all their players being sold so it's not just us. Saints are an affront to their preconceptions and I, for one, have expected this rocky closed season because of our success. Financial strength and establishing ourselves will reduce this in future but it will always be there to some degree.
Personally, I don't see MP going for many reasons but primarily because we are a perfect fit for his way of working. Saints fans are patient, we don't expect instant success even though naturally we would like it and are happy with seeing good football. We have no delusions of grandure but realise we have unfulfilled potential and dreams. Spurs fans and the club itself are completely different. A bit like those to the east, they think they're bigger than they are and have some divine right to success gained by throwing money at it. If Poch went there, I believe it would be short lived and very little job satisfaction would be realised.
I don't doubt that he and Nicola still talk and, if the case, Nicola's advice is clear to see in yesterday's interview.
There will be no upset if he stays, Luke may go as the money may be too much to turn down ( I've "heard" that his family aren't keen though ) and he can be replaced. Adam is unique and irreplaceable so Poch will keep hoild as long as he stays.
It's not that we need clarity Malcombe, it's just that we want it. I am quietly confident that the club intend to push onward. Let's hope I'm right!
