CELTIC music’s ‘best-kept secret’, folk trio Barrule bring their unique take on traditional Manx music to Fishguard this weekend.

Just one of the many acts to perform in the town as part of the annual folk festival, they fuse accordion, fiddle and bouzoki to create their own retelling of traditional music from the Isle of Man.

Their performance is set to take place at Ffwrn on Monday night, and marks the venue’s first year as a hub venue for the festival.

Set to headline at Ffwrn on Sunday night are heavenly folk partnership Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston, and Teeside storytellers The Young’uns, who celebrated their tenth anniversary this year.

Performing at Theatr Gwaun on Saturday will be Celtic quintet The Outside Track, and Radio 2 Horizon award winners Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar.

Songwriter, singer and ‘folk rapper’ Pete Morton brings a modern edge to proceedings, while family units Caffle and The Klezmic Rays perform Celtic roots and traditional Jewish songs respectively.

With a repertoire that includes everything from old favourites, to rousing singalongs and delicate ballads, Quarto are guaranteed to keep audiences going, while Celtic harpist Carwyn Tywyn provides a more reflective and delicate mood.

Winter Wilson are described as having “stunning harmonies, thought-provoking and often challenging lyrics, all held together with a weird, off-the-wall humour all of their own” so definitely shouldn’t be missed.

So, with music for everyone, plus a host of activities and workshops throughout the weekend, there’s no excuse not to have a folk-ing good time in Fishguard.
