Southampton's Luke Shaw says he is not letting speculation about his future distract him from World Cup duty with England

Daily Echo: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Ashley Cole's World Cup omission in favour of Luke Shaw was a brave decision that the teenager has pledged to justify, with the left-back ignoring talk of pressure and a summer move as he looks to succeed with England.

Just 18 months after making his league debut for Saints, the full-back has grown to become one of the hottest young prospects in world football.

Manchester United's interest in Shaw is widely known and is no surprise given his rapid ascent, which has seen the boyhood Chelsea fan usurp idol Cole in the England pecking order.

The Chelsea left-back, a veteran of 107 caps, announced his international retirement after Roy Hodgson plumped for Shaw - not that the Saints defender is overly-concerned with the scrutiny brought by that decision.

''There's no pressure,'' he said. ''I don't really feel pressure. I just focus on my own game.

''I have come here to help the England team and I will do everything I can.

''You never know what may happen. Leighton Baines may play in the first game for the first 10 minutes, pick up an injury and I could be in.

''I am never going to go to a tournament thinking I am not playing because if something like that does happen, I have got to be ready.''

Shaw speaks with a maturity that echoes his on-field performances, making it hard to comprehend that he watched the 2010 World Cup as a 14-year-old at his family home in Surrey.

''I remember that World Cup sitting at home with my family on the settee and I was thinking one day I want to be playing in one of these tournaments,'' Shaw said. ''But not as soon as it has happened.

''I was very surprised. With Ashley Cole not playing that many games I thought I might have a chance, but obviously he played in the last three games of the season and played incredibly well so that made me think that maybe it might not be my turn.

''Obviously, I saw that I was announced in the squad and it was the best feeling in the world.

''I remember when I was sitting there with my family and friends and we were just all so proud that I am still only 18 and I going to a World Cup.''

Shaw's only senior international experience to date came against Denmark in March, when he came on as half-time substitute for Cole in a 1-0 win.

That display coupled with his fine displays for Southampton clearly did enough to persuade Hodgson to take him to Brazil, as well as leading United to step-up their interest this summer.

Needing to rebuild after a woeful season, Shaw is a key target for the Red Devils - something which may distract someone who does not even turn 19 until the eve of the World Cup final.

''It is something that is not even on my mind,'' he said in response to the speculation. ''Transfer talk is completely gone - I am here to focus on England and England only.''

Notice he didn't deny transfer talk, only that he's not thinking about it, which of course he doesn't have to because he has an agent for that.

Just stating a fact that in the end it's an empty quote. Players don't need to trouble themselves with transfer negotiations because they pay agents to handle those kinds of things. So a player saying it's not on his mind is not saying there aren't things happening behind the scenes.

Where have you heard he's definitely staying? I have always felt that Shaw and Lallana won't look to move from Saints before the world cup because it will show everyone that they have been distracted by all this transfer talk. I know that Agents do most of the deals but surely if Shaw had said to his agent get me a move to Utd and it had happened before the first game then that would surely end up being a distraction!

The best scenario would be we keep them all and MP and tell the world we don't have Cortese anymore but we still have his ambition and are not a selling club! We are developing the best crop of young English players to get Southampton into Europe and push for the league title!

The real story is that Mauricio and all of Southampton FC's best players are all still with Saints.

All the media speculation will remain bull manure, unless the club announces any change. Yet the media still continue milking the bull on a daily basis!!! I am beginning to wonder if the bull will go blind, similar to all its media milkers!!!

Luke should, as he says is, be concentrating on the forthcoming World Cup.
Woy Hodgson has quite rightly told his England squad that he does not want any distractions or agents distracting them.
Luke knows he has a contract and at 18 does not need to move at the moment.
This is good news as he will represent England as a Saints player.
Time after the World Cup to convince him to stay for at least another season or two to see how Saints progress.

Malcombe,
i`m not one of those who has constant digs at the echo but be fair, they wont print speculation that would be wasted? go back through the stories on the site and you will see that they have constantly reported speculation and rumour about MP and the players leaving, most have less substance than this story. we have had stories about Spuds wanting MP, MP`s odds tumbling, shaw house hunting, saints holding out for a higher lalla bid just in the last week, and today we have hull bid £3mill for Jose, I could list many, many more. yet theres nothing regarding this rumour about MP staying.
why is one rumour `better` than another?
we get this with certain posters on here, they accept some rumours as truth but disregard others because they don't fit in with their views and opinions.
I have no idea if this `MP staying` rumour is true or not and as with all rumours I take it with a pinch of salt until there is absolute truth, that's not saying I don't want it to be true, I think most of us do.
as others have said the rumours surrounding luke have gone from manure place bid to deal done to house hunting to 95% done to on hold and now the MP rumour has `cast doubt` over both luke and lallas moves.
if the echo want to put these rumours on their site then they should also put this rumour up.
I also haven't known anything like this in 35+ years as a fan, it doesn't help though when fellow fans throw in the towel and just accept that players are gone and we cant keep them. people should have more faith in the club, players and manager. whatever happens we will find out first on the OS.

NO ONE.
That we WANT to keep is going to leave.
SO.
Who do we want to keep?
Just about most of the players who played regularly the second half of the season.
Most of the youngsters who have played well at youth level.
All of the players currently playing at international level, at all age levels.
Doesn't leave a lot of room for new signings to be quite honest.
A centre back, a forward and a goalie, perhaps.
MP won't be leaving either then.
But what do we know?
Support the Saints, whatever.

Malcombe, i`m not one of those who has constant digs at the echo but be fair, they wont print speculation that would be wasted? go back through the stories on the site and you will see that they have constantly reported speculation and rumour about MP and the players leaving, most have less substance than this story. we have had stories about Spuds wanting MP, MP`s odds tumbling, shaw house hunting, saints holding out for a higher lalla bid just in the last week, and today we have hull bid £3mill for Jose, I could list many, many more. yet theres nothing regarding this rumour about MP staying. why is one rumour `better` than another? we get this with certain posters on here, they accept some rumours as truth but disregard others because they don't fit in with their views and opinions.
Thought your post hit the nail on the head , why anyone could vote against it is beyound me. I read every day tosh about my mates mate knows who's going and who's staying, is beyound belief. Would be very glad if the club would issue a statement of any information on what has happened since the end of last season . IMHO i think we will start this coming season with much the same as we finished with this season plus 2 or 3 new players.

Mauricio Pochettino looks set to sign a new contract with Southampton despite reported interest from Tottenham.

The future of the Saints boss has been in doubt since the club’s chairman Nicola Cortese resigned in January, with Spurs thought to be leading the chase for the highly-rated Argentine.

But despite the higher profile and additional funds he would likely receive at White Hart Lane, it appears Pochettino has opted for another season at St Mary’s.

Only last the media were telling us that manure's Evra was going to Italy and that our Luke was OFFERED the Left Back position there.
Well it appears that manure have Extended Evra's contract :-
i.e." Evra Patrice Latyr Extended"

As they are not in Europe next season I cannot think it would be good for Luke's development be sharing the LB position, one mistake in a league game and he will be just playing cup games after that.

FOCUS ON ENGLAND is the sensible way ahead for Luke.

If all our Players stay and we strengthen our Strike Options and sort the Dani situation - SFC wil be competeing for a Toip 6 finish and Europe.

Add a Goalie and a CB.

We can then build Season on Season to compete for a Champions League Finish and have the Premiership crown in our sights in the 5 year Plan.

Adding strength in Depth - spending money and combining youth will improve our Cup placings and we can expect a Wembley Appearance and compete for a Cup in the 5 year Plan.

We have a Golden Generation of Players. Let's not waste the opportunity for this Club - the Manager - the Players and Fans.

How about this for a theory. Luke is going to be sold and then loaned back for a season. We then qualify for Champions League and Manure continue their slip into oblivion. Luke then realises his huge mistake in going to a side on the decline and asks for a move back again. By this time of course Matt Target is being widely touted as being the best full back the world has ever seen and valued at £50 million. So Luke misses out and is stuck with the ageing superstars, including Shrek. You read it here first.

If you let other Clubs take the P*ss - then they will.

Steve Bruce thought it was feeding time at SFC and put a cheeky bid for £3 - for Jose - way under value - but it looks good for his fans and board etc

Liverpuddle and Manure know how expensive it is to source players in Europe - currently around £30 million to £40 million so how about raiding a successful Club like SFC and put in a low bid for our Stars - and We are meant to have our heads turned and be grateful = GET LOST !!

WE KEEP OUR PLAYERS
WE ADD TO OUR PLAYERS
WE MOVE UP THE PREMIER LEAGUE.

Different to NC - it is disappointing to fans that Ralph K. who talks about Leadership and Communication - and we are back to the wall of silence.

Better to state the Vision - SIGN UP THE MANAGER - and sort the Dani situation and start sourcing a Striker to give us the Cutting edge next year. Rickie will still have an important role to fulfil next season - as will Adam and Luke.

Nothing will change - unless we state our ambitions and go for it. David Moyes could have No to a so called Top Club (Manure = what a joke) and would have been in a better place.

We also should say NO to these undervalued bids - and move on to strengthening for next Season.
