Rickie Lambert issues an open letter to Southampton fans following his move to Liverpool

Lambert thanks Saints fans

Lambert thanks Saints fans

First published in Sport

Rickie Lambert has written an open letter to Saints fans following his transfer to Liverpool.

Here are his thoughts in full...

"What can I say…?

"Southampton has been my life for the past five years, in which we have achieved all of our dreams and more.

"First I have to thank Markus Liebherr for saving Southampton then Alan Pardew for bringing me to the club.

"Thank you to all the staff involved in making me the player I am today. Without your knowledge and commitment I would not be here right now at a World Cup with England.

"Thank you to all the players, past and present, who I have had nothing but good times and success with driven by our club captain, Kelvin Davis. I love every last one of you.

"Thank you to the managers I have worked with – Alan, Nigel and Mauricio – and their teams for helping me and Southampton step up and adapt to every challenge that has come our way the past five years.

"When I grew up there was only one club I loved. I can honestly say now I have two clubs which will always be in my heart and that is thanks to the Saints fans.

"The people who support this club have been nothing short of amazing towards me and, when I look back in years to come, it will be the relationship I had with the fans here which will stand out the most.

"Southampton have allowed me to realise a lifelong ambition by joining Liverpool FC and taking my family home. The five-year plan when I arrived was to get this club from League 1 to the top half of the Premier League. Against all the odds we have achieved that.

"Now, under Katharina Liebherr’s leadership, the club has the chance for new plan, a new chapter, and I wish them all the success in the world."

Fair play SRL, enjoy your 'dream' end to your career!
Meanwhile, I am hoping beyond all else that the board's kind and sentimental treatment of this case is backed up with 1, hopefully 2 gob-smacking replacements as strikers, and that we are also going to get the benefit of this, by making space to improve the team, not just leaving ourselves short.

Liverpool count yourself lucky to be getting Lambo but you must now move on with your efforts to take anymore of our players. We are pushing on for bigger and better things next season!

Not only a great and talented player, but a humble family guy. I wish you all the very best mate in your new 'home' and many thanks for the great performances you've given us. Now, who the hell to we get to take the penalties??!!

I think if we had refused Rickie this move players would have questiopned more about staying than letting him go. At this time in his career it was the first and last chance to go to the club of his dreams. I think considering what he has done for Saints it would of been heartless not to let him go.
Five years ago Rickie was supposedly at his peak , yet each season he has produced the same standard and has in truth grown as a footballer. In his wildest dreams he could not even imagine that at nthe twilight of his career he would finish 8th in the Premier, play for England, go to the world cup and seal a move to his home club.
To allow Rickie to do this was the right thing and to be strong and not give in to sell other players is also the right thing. Good luck Rickie and I hope its a move you do not regret.

Strasbourg Saint says...

.... And thank you Rickie.

The sad day when he played his last game for Saints was always going to come and even if he hadn't been transferred, it was going to come sooner rather than later; maybe next season, maybe the following season. So, who could possibly deny him his dream move?

The contribution he made to our rise from League 1 to the edge of Europe was huge. Others contributed, but he was our talisman.

Replacing him will be impossible, and there have been very few Saints players over the years for whom that is the case.

More than that, whilst a Saint, he embodied all that has been good about the club these past 5 incredible years. Both on and off the pitch, what an example he has set to others, especially those coming through the academy, and most of all to those who find themselves looking for other clubs having been released as a junior.

He worked hard, listened to those who could help him and never gave up on his dreams. Now, one by one, he is realising them, and no one deserves that more than Rickie.

In an ideal world it would have been great to see you finish your playing career here and have a helping hand in bringing through the youngsters. Hey ho! All the years i have supported saints and seen players leave that this is a first that a loyal hard working player like Lambert has done this. Other players just bugger off with out saying ****. But this goes a long way in the eyes of any saints fan or it should do. Good luck up there Rickie and all the best. Hope it works out for you and they look after you.

Farewell to a Saints legend and a true gent. I've supported the Saints for nearly 50 years from Terry Paine and Mick Channon through Le God days to todays heroes. You are worthy of any great Saints team. This past twelve months must have seemed a dream to you and now complete the fairy tale and score a winning penalty in a shootout for England in Brazil. Good luck and best wishes to one of the best!!

That is not fair to label someone "not a true Saints fan".

So nice to see everyone wishing Rickie all the best. He's a real gent, an example to all players in how to win the hearts of the supporters with humility and no end of skill. Top man, I for one, will sing your name next time you visit the Saints. Can't wait to see that grin when you get your first World Cup goal.

Good luck, well deserved finale to a career of a great pro. I will never forget you scoring for England v Scotland, such emotion and belief resulting in a defining moment of your career. Not only was it great to beat the Scots, that goal was key moment for all Saints players being recognised as England assets. It also came from an honest pro who plays first for pleasure, and not just for money. My only regret is that it may just be the start of a 'fire sell' at St Mary's.

We have lost a fantastic player who cannot be replaced. I do wish him all the best, however, I hope if he plays against us next season he will have an off day. It's hard being 300 miles away especially when all I hear are newspapers ranting on about all our players leaving this summer, (good job we have the best youth policy in the country our under-19's could beat spuds, manure, city, and our under -8's could beat poopy). We just have to wait and see if our board holds out and keeps this team together and adds a brilliant manager and players that will move us onto the next 5 year project.

Once again Rickie you show that even being a football "star", you are still and always will be a true "normal" person and an utter gent. All those players that kiss the badge's and claim undying loyalty could take more than one leaf out of your book. Only legends can leave a club that loves him so much, and yet can still pluck the heart strings with a mix of sadness, love and heartfelt joy for a true Saint, gent and talisman. All the best Rickie. By god we all going to miss you, but to a man we will all wish you nothing but good. A sad loss for saints but a great gain for human kind and morality. Coyr coyr coyr.

It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Rickie will be an SFC legend forever, I will never forget how I felt when he opened the scoring at Wembley in the JPT final, or the winner against the Jocks on his England debut which really blazed a trail for Lallana, Rodriguez and Shaw to follow, hopefully many more to emulate him this year - Clyne, JWP and Cork to name but three. Thanks for everything Rickie, second only to the incomparable MLT in my list of all-time favourite Saints players.

Yes you could be right. He could also end up playing for the skunts when he gets to sixty. He'd still be the best player in the side by a country mile. Thinking about it though that's another 28 years. Skunts will have been gone for many years by then.

Now, who the hell to we get to take the penalties??!!
Me too. I have seldom contributed to this blog, but enjoy my daily read and chuckles. However, I want to register my thanks to Rickie and wish him all the very best. I truly believe he will be a World Cup hero for England and a great asset to Liverpool. I think his real talent, apart from goal scoring, is his remarkable ability to hold the ball up and lay it off. He is the most unselfish player I can ever remember seeing in a Saints shirt. His football style reminds me of Peter Osgood, when he was at Saints. Peter was not as humble as Rickie, but was a magician with the ball at his feet. I thought we could never replace him, but then I have been proven wrong so many times. We will miss you Rickie, but we will move on and put you into our memories with great affection.
