SIR – That was an interesting letter from Rob Higgie (T&A, May 30) stating that UKIP should be fielding a candidate against Shipley’s Philip Davies (Conservative) at the next General Election so that “democracy can be seen to be working”.

In his opinion, the lack of a UKIP candidate would be because of Mr Davies’s call for Britain to leave the EU.

Now that is all very well, but I note that there was no mention by Mr Higgie of his recent defection from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems.

Strange, that – especially considering that he is no doubt hopeful that a UKIP candidate could possibly split the vote for Mr Davies, and possibly improve the chances of his newly-chosen party instead.

Obviously he chose – for whatever reason – not to want to make that admission in his letter. I wonder why not?
