Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry has been left out of England's squad for next week's first Test v Sri Lanka at Lord's.
Only Kevin Pietersen scored more Ashes runs for England during the winter whitewash and Carberry's hopes were raised by his ODI recall.
But Middlesex's Sam Robson has replaced him as captain Alastair Cook's opening partner.
Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan are also set for their Test debuts, with Chris Woakes has been preferred to Ben Stokes, who was considered short of full match fitness.
England: Cook, Robson, Root, Bell, Ballance, Moeen Ali, Prior, Broad, Jordan, Anderson, Woakes, Plunkett
