Southampton have started contract negotiations with Ronald Koeman, having identified the Dutch legend as first choice to become the club's new manager

Daily Echo: Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman

Saints have opened contract negotiations with Ronald Koeman, as they edge closer to appointing the Dutch legend as their new manager.

The 51-year-old is the club’s number-one target to succeed Mauricio Pochettino, after the Argentine left the club last month to join Tottenham Hotspur.

It is understood that Saints have made a firm contract offer within the past 24 hours, with the hope of finalising a deal next week.

Koeman is currently on holiday in Turkey, but is due to return home tomorrow, when he will continue discussions.

A deal has not yet been agreed, but there is a willingness on both sides for it to happen.

Saints first held talks with Koeman nearly two weeks ago and were understood to have been extremely impressed by the former Netherlands captain, who left Feyenoord this summer after three excellent seasons in Rotterdam.

The club have been keen to appoint a manager who, like Pochettino and his predecessor Nigel Adkins, encourages an attractive and attacking style of play, while also promoting young talent from the academy system.

Koeman’s work at Feyenoord – the leading scorers in the Dutch top-flight last season and a provider of a number of young players to the country’s World Cup squad – meant that he ticked those boxes.

The ex-Barcelona defender has also enjoyed spells with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven as a manager, while he has taken charge at other major European clubs, such as Valencia and Benfica.

If he is confirmed as manager, Koeman will have to appoint what would largely be a new backroom staff, with his assistant coaches at Feyenoord – Jean-Paul van Gastel and Giovanni van Bronckhorst – set to remain in Holland.

But Jan Kluitenberg, who was Koeman’s physical coach at Feyenoord, also left the club this summer and would be a potential addition.

Good news at last. After last night, I hope he brings a bunch of Dutch players with him. Shame van Brockenhurst isn't coming too.

A bit premature but well done t the board, another step up.

Well done SFC. With a manager in place we can start off te season ahead. Just hope the board handles the want aways in the same frame of mind. No more cheap buys for the so called big clubs and lets have tasty sale on's included. Looking forward to the new season and our new five year plan.

Thats why I said a bit premature but I take your point. Must be close though. I had a look at the odds last night and he'd gone out to 1/10 with Mancini next at 10/1. They rarely get it that wrong.

Hopefully if this comes off then it could be the start of an exciting chapter for Saints. Certainly a much bigger name then Poch when he first came and for me that shows massive intent. Hopefully he'll bring in some decent Dutch players as well who would be more suited to the English game rather than your Gaston's and Osvaldo's. Good stuff.

Up the Saints and keep the faith.

Perfect timing after Holland beat Spain 5-1. Can't wait for our new 5 year project to get under way with Big Ron.

Daniel Levy and Brenda Rogers look and learn. This is the way to do things, the Southampton way. Not by getting Steeeeeeevie Geraaaard to poach our players at a World Cup warm up. Total Football is coming to Southampton.....you have been warned.

All the papers are reporting that Barcelona are looking to hijack Liverpool's move for Dejan Lovren. (Daily Mail etc)

If Lovren does go I would rather it was Barca and they knock Liverpooooool out of the CL.

All the papers are reporting that Barcelona are looking to hijack Liverpool's move for Dejan Lovren. (Daily Mail etc)

If Lovren does go I would rather it was Barca and they knock Liverpooooool out of the CL.
lol who is he again? Oh yeah the manager of past clubs in Mickey Mouse leagues! Premier league is a new ball game....our manager don't need to learn

This is what most here have been waiting for and it cheers me a lot to see so many pretty chuffed.

If it is he then we can expect some different signings from those perhaps we were expecting - exciting thoughts.

So will wait till Monday when we hope we can all cheer and especially if the news is everyone is staying at St. Mary's and we will be playing in red and white stripes. The orange away kit mentioned above, would be a novelty at least. My favourite colour as it happens!

Like all your posts, though some of the rude, even very rude stuff does not really help, does it? But, love things like Manure, Diverpool and Brenda - right on the button! Come on you Saints!!

I heard Ron might be bringing Dirk Van Lyndhoerst with him. He's a bit green round the edges and tends to get stuck running through the centre, but he's a compact little player who could definitely link play between Giovanni Van Brockenhurst and Peeters Van Caadneym.

I think to get a good manager you need to offer ambition otherwise he won't come but an unknown will always be grateful for a chance in the top flight. If the rumours are true the delay in appointing Big Ron was over transfer budget and not personal terms. Apparently we've now woken up to reality hence the imminent deal. I feel a lot more positive about the future now and am looking forward to the England game so off to pub to warm up!

Sherwood was 1/6 favourite, the bookies got that wrong! Perhaps he wanted too much. Alan Irvine was first offered the WBA job about four years ago but turned it down at the time, they finally got their man.

Yes please Adam have a cracker £25m already - take Italy apart and should go up by another £5m have a great all round tournament and it should be about £35m with a 25% sell on - that'll do nicely. Though personally I'd choose Skiverpool over Shitespur more chance of getting into the medals and cups mate.

Jls, Shitespur is new to me and I think this should take over from Spuds. Seems to sum things up much better. Good on you!

Well I hope Koeman signs and it seems 90% certain. He has a good knowledge of Europe managed 4th with a cashless Feyenoord and they wer the highest goalscorers in their league. He has a better track and win record than Pochettino.

Yes strange appointment especially after taking so long.
I feel a lot more positive about the future now and am looking forward to the England game so off to pub to warm up!
seed just an opinion here but do you think the board might have `engineered` MP`s departure from the club?
do you think it possible that they fed him some bull to put him off staying whilst making it look like they still wanted him?
if the rumours are true MP left partly because of the transfer budget, yet they then offered a big budget to RK.
could it be that they saw MP as NC`s man and just wanted him out.

Koeman will come in with a sound board, still with a dream of Europe. A brilliant squad. Possibly lose a couple of wantaways, but what a mighty kitty he will have. Plus his contact list will be far superior to MP, and his reputation is huge, I shudder to think of the talent he could bring

Koeman has a managerial win rate of 56%. By contrast Pochettino has a win rate of only 34%.

The mighty Alex Ferguson only had a win rate of only 58%. That's only 2% better that Koeman.

At some clubs he's had a win rate of over 60%, something Ferguson never achieved.

Hate to say it but I think Koeman is not the right man for the job. His recent stats are not great, he is not in it for the long run, and is not a big name manager. As a player yes, awesome, but that is where awesome stops. I am worried. I hope it is not a long term deal as we will be paying him a lot of money when we have to sack him Walt way through the season.
Moyes is a much safer bet,

All the papers are reporting that Barcelona are looking to hijack Liverpool's move for Dejan Lovren. (Daily Mail etc)

If Lovren does go I would rather it was Barca and they knock Liverpooooool out of the CL.
lol who is he again? Oh yeah the manager of past clubs in Mickey Mouse leagues! Premier league is a new ball game....our manager don't need to learn
I have to ask myself the question " why is a Scouser posting nothing but derogatory comments on our website? "
I find myself wishing to give a good, well disciplined and constructive answer, but all I really want to do is say " FCUK OFF YOU CHAVY SCOUSE T#AT "

Koeman is a brilliant manager!
This is just about the stupidest comment i have ever read

Of course koeman has a high win percentage , he has ONLY managed big clubs in sh*te leagues

There are only two teams in Portugal , he was managing one of them . He has managed all 3 big clubs in holland , plus AZ ( who he inherited as champions)

managing Ajax ,psv , feyenoord , az , and benfica will ALWAYS net you high win percentages .

Win percentages are an idiotic way of judging managers . Tony pulis had a 42.86 win percentage at palace last season ...David Moyes had a 52.94 win percentage at utd . Who was the better manager ? Duh , the guy at the big club will ALWAYS have a higher percentage

When you take on a new manager it is advisable to employ a manager who has experienced the kind of results you envisage for your team.
Neil Lennon is used to winning.
Ron Koeman is used to winning.
I would want a manager who is used to winning.
If you want a manager who is used to struggling to make ends meet and struggle with finances, then you avoid these two.
Of course the bigger clubs have a better win percentage.
We want to be a bigger club.
We want to have a big win percentage.
Your comparison with SAF does not hold, MUFC are quite a big club too,in a league where for a very long time only three clubs won the league.
Perhaps Big Ron is the man to take us up that next step

We all want to dream , but my point is koeman is not the guy to make our dreams reality . Fact about koeman is, which most fans here have chosen to ignore...koeman has been a failure at probably every club he has managed , apart from initial success at ajax , and maybe his time at feyenoord could be considered reasonable

His career is littered with sackings and failures ...

Looks like according to a relatively conservative and reliable telegraph that Ronnald is our man.

He has more experience than any of our previous managers, and he has experienced victory in Europe, and in domestic cups and leagues , far better than any previous coach at SFC.

He will attract players ,he will play a continental style of football.

His man management and motivational skills , as well a healing the club and bringing them together so they trust and admire him in the same way as they did NA and MOPO will take time if he's failing and be achieved in a month if is perceived as succeeding.

We should give him our fullest support , this appointment confirms the boards intent to me and is backed up by the refusal to yield to the enquiries and bids that have been tabled.

Let's hope it's true and we get confirmation soonest!

I read somewhere that Erwin Koeman and Ronald Koeman promised their Dad Martin Koeman (former Dutch international) that they would work together at a club in the future. Ron and Erwin's Dad died in December 2013. Glad to see they are keeping that promise.

What's your point? Strachan was sacked by Coventry before coming to Saints, he didn't turn out too bad. Pochettino was sacked by Espanyol before coming to us.

I don't subscribe too much to win ratios but I have seen a little bit of how Koeman sets his teams up and I would rather watch that kind of football as opposed to the negative dross Moyes likes to play. But that is just my preference, I like football to be entertaining.

That should give them plenty of impetus to do the job properly at Saints. I'm liking the positive vibes coming out of the club - it may have taken some time to sort out, but it's worth it if we're going to get it right.
