More than two decades after breaking English fans’ hearts, Ronald Koeman will look to win over those of the Saints supporters.

The 51-year-old yesterday took charge at St Mary’s, arguably becoming the most decorated person ever to hold the manager’s position at the club.

Perhaps only fellow European Cup winner Graeme Souness and ex-England boss Glenn Hoddle could claim to have been of a similar profile at the time of their arrivals.

A Dutch legend, Koeman was an integral part of the 1988 Netherlands side that won the European Championship, while he also lifted two European Cups as a player.

But it was his role in stopping England from qualifying for the 1994 World Cup that he is perhaps most famous for on these shores.

In a make-or-break game away to the Netherlands in October 1993, Koeman would prove to be the central figure.

As David Platt raced through on goal in the second half, with the score 0-0, he was hauled back by Koeman.

Somehow, much to the fury of England manager Graham Taylor, he escaped with just a yellow card.

Minutes later, he scored with a free-kick to give Holland the lead, before Dennis Bergkamp added a second, to prevent England reaching USA ’94.

There are many moments from a glittering career that Koeman is far more deserving of being renowned for, though.

An attacking centre-half, he began his professional career with Groningen, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 1980.

Three years later, he would win the first of 78 caps for the Netherlands, while also moving to Dutch giants Ajax.

An Eredivisie title and a KNVB Cup winner’s medal would follow in his time with the Amsterdam club, before a move to PSV Eindhoven in 1986.

What followed would be a more fruitful three years than even Koeman could surely have imagined.

PSV won the Dutch top-flight in each season, while they also captured two KNVB Cups.

But the most famous success came in the 1987/88 campaign, when they completed a remarkable treble by winning the European Cup for the first time in their history.

Koeman netted his side’s opening penalty in the shoot-out against Benfica, as PSV triumphed 6-5 on spot kicks, following a 0-0 draw in Stuttgart.

As if that particular year could not get any better for him, he was then part of the famous Dutch team that swept aside all before them in the 1988 European Championship, securing the only major title in the country’s history.

Barcelona then signed him in 1989, with Koeman becoming part of Johan Cruyff’s ‘dream team’.

In six years there, he would win ten trophies, including four La Liga titles.

The most famous triumph came in 1992, though, when he fired home a stunning free-kick to defeat Sampdoria 1-0 in the European Cup final at Wembley.

That was one of 88 goals he would score in 264 appearances in Spain.

Koeman hung up his boots in 1997 after a two-year spell with Feyenoord, and he retired as the top-scoring defender in world football history, with 239 goals in 685 career appearances, while netting 14 times for his country.

He began his coaching career shortly afterwards, working initially as an assistant to Netherlands boss Guus Hiddink at the 1998 World Cup, before becoming Louis van Gaal’s right-hand man at Barcelona.

He spent two years with the Spanish giants, where José Mourinho was also on the staff.

Koeman will be reunited with both men this season, with Mourinho at Chelsea and Van Gaal taking charge at Manchester United.

His first managerial position came in January 2000, when he took the reins at Vitesse Arnhem.

After an impressive first 18 months as a head coach, he was snapped up by Ajax.

He spent four years in Amsterdam, guiding the club to a pair of Eredivisie titles, a KNVB Cup, and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Koeman moved to Benfica in 2005, again reaching the last eight of the Champions League.

However, failure to win the league saw him leave after just one season.

Koeman then joined PSV, winning the Eredivisie title, ahead of a switch to Valencia in 2007.

He delivered a Copa del Rey crown with the Spanish club, but poor form in the league resulted in his dismissal in April 2008.

After taking a year out, he took over at AZ in 2009, but left after just a few months following a bad start to the season.

Far better times would follow at Feyenoord, however.

Koeman arrived there in 2011 and, in his three seasons with the Rotterdam club, he oversaw a huge upturn in fortunes, recording two runner-up finishes in the Dutch top-flight, as well as a third place.

He also promoted a number of players from the youth ranks, with Feyenoord ultimately providing five players for the Dutch World Cup squad this summer.

With his contract expiring, he opted to leave in order to seek a new challenge and, for Saints, it appears the timing couldn’t have been better.

Great move bringing Ron in as manager, proves our board are serious. Mopo had players respect but I often questioned some of his decisions. Also lallana's agent is apparently stirring and pushing for a pay day move. Lallana isn't keen on a move, double his wages and keep him!

Great stuff. The Echo loves quoting legends.

Certainly it seems quite a number of Saints legends have already applauded the appointment of the dutch legend - though haven't seen anything from legend Le Tiss yet and he may be the most legendary legend we've got.

However, two of my legendary mates have been in contact and are delighted - Phil Watson, the London Transport Route 471 conductor legend and Hui Wei, the Swanage chinese laundry legend.

I have no doubt that my good pal Saints fan Joe Livingstone will also be really pleased. He is the podiatrist legend at Salisbury Hospital.

I do wonder if the term legend is being rather over-used by the Echo and myself, not least as legends are supposed to be mythical and truly generationally historic characters such as Robin Hood and King Arthur. In fact I may stop calling Phil and Hui legends - though I think Joe can still be called a legend as his legendary work involved the curing of thousands of foot problems and the foot actually is a leg end.

What a relief to get a manager in and great to go onto newsnow-soton and only to see positive press comment and also that our players may not now, all be leaving, as has been suggested over the last 2 months.
Keep up the good work mate.

Today is the first day for a while where I have woke up smiling! After all the negative press from DM and DE, it has been great reading and watching something positive. I am now thinking that we can build on last season and break into the top six. I stand by my comment on a previous thread, that if Shaw and Lallana still want to go, let them! If they really don't want to play for us after meeting RK, it's their loss. But we should screw these vultures for as much as we can - fee up front, no add-ons. Just think of the pull someone like Ron has, particularly with the likes of Pelle and Van Dijk (both seemingly quality players) and how must the academy lads be feeling, knowing that if they are good enough, he will play them?
I feel this is the dawn of a new era at St Marys, after the last five fantastic years. It would seem that the future is back in our hands and qualification for the promised land of the Champions League is a distinct possibility in the not too distant future. I hope we push on and gatecrash the "big club's" party and show the press in this country that they can write whatever lies they like about Saints, but we will never be beaten into submission.

Whatever happens in the future under Koeman the most pleasing thing for me about his appointment is that it shows the owners and the board`s ambition to try and take Saints to the next level. Consequently if for any reason things don`t work out us fans we can now be confident that the board would then go out and get another high class replacement rather than a journeyman manager as we have done in the past. Having said that I`m very optimistic that Koeman will be a success. As others have already said he seems to be a perfect fit for us. Let`s hope that turns out to be the case. In the meantime congratulations KL, RK and LR on a seemingly great appointment. Happy days.

So would we all but let's keep our expectation realistic shall we. It'll be his first season so a little bedding in should be allowed for. 8th is the highest we've ever had in the PL so let's be content with that again and perhaps a good cup run then start looking forward to breaking into the Euro spots and a cup final.

Just remember in far too many years past we have merely celebrated sliding out of the relegation spots on the last game of the season.

The fella is clearly good but a miracle worker he ain't. Do not set him up to fail with ill conceived comments such as these.

Looking forward to the new season even more now. Some have pointed out that his record outside of Holland hasn't been as impressive but I say lets give him a chance. He has some great players here and a great academy which may well not have been the case at Valencia to be honest, however he still won a cup there and if we are challenging top 8 and win a cup next year I for one will be happy. This is an encouraging statement of intent, one that bringing Bruce or Lennon in would surely not have been. I hope he can keep our best players but if they want away then let them go and bring in good young players who want to be here not just get a big payday. Bring on next season and lets enjoy the next stage of our journey....

You are non stop!!! leg end you are so quick to turn it into humour, I always latch on to people who have built in spirit and you certainly have it.
When I was a Referee in the 90s I had a Line at Colden Common about 1992 and at that time Dave Armstrong surely he's a leg end was Coaching the Team to keep his foot in (sorry). Before ko we were talking and he ask my opinion why Branfoot got the Managers job at Southampton, I said well he was Lawrie's Assistant then he went to Reading and did a good job, he then returned to The Dell and Lawrie left for Sunderland and when he spoke he sounded like Lawrie so that's why I think they appointed Branfoot, David replied yea thinking about it I suppose he does, incidentally the last I knew of Lou Chatterley he was Caretaker maintenance man at Winchester College as for Branfoot one of the worst Manager Saints ever employed haven't a clue where he is.
Looking forward to the new season and I hope I can watch more games after my Hip replacement on Friday in Winchester which has prevented me watching last season with bone on bone Hip. Ronald will quickly be forgiven for his sins when playing against England if he brings success and soon we will know if players who supposedly want away will now stay with this quality Manager COYR

Yes, I bet you want red and white stripes where the white stripe starts from the bottom and goes up and red stripe starting at the top and going down, whereas we would prefer it the other way.

I've maintained for years that if we want to keep our favoured red and white stripes we need to consider wooing Colgate Toothpaste as potential sponsors, thereby maintaining the sparkle in our play, and squeezing every last drop of effort from the players.

I think it's Koom - they always use the oooo sound for both 'o' and 'u' I reckon. Certainly my Dutch mate Timo does - he always calls the skates coonts.

glad we`ve now got a manager in place, and he looks to be an improvement on liarchino so happy days.

off subject, watching the Germany Portugal game yesterday reminded me of a little debate we had on here about whether Fonte should be picked for Portugal instead of Pepe. watching Pepe get sent off I wondered why anyone would pick a player who has a short fuse and is easy to wind over fonte, who had a great season for us. Pepe is now banned for at least 1 game which is likely to be extended to 3. he let his team down yesterday and will now miss the rest of the group stage and the first knock out round. he has a long history of losing his cool and lashing out at opponents so why take the risk?
I`m not excusing Mueller`s actions though and think he should have seen red as well for cheating, its the only way to stop it happening.
Fonte would have been a far better and safer choice and wouldn't have let his nation and teammates down. who now would pick Pepe over Fonte?

Yes, I bet you want red and white stripes where the white stripe starts from the bottom and goes up and red stripe starting at the top and going down, whereas we would prefer it the other way.
I've maintained for years that if we want to keep our favoured red and white stripes we need to consider wooing Colgate Toothpaste as potential sponsors, thereby maintaining the sparkle in our play, and squeezing every last drop of effort from the players.
As opposed to wearing blue and going down the tubes?

So would we all but let's keep our expectation realistic shall we. It'll be his first season so a little bedding in should be allowed for. 8th is the highest we've ever had in the PL so let's be content with that again and perhaps a good cup run then start looking forward to breaking into the Euro spots and a cup final.

Just remember in far too many years past we have merely celebrated sliding out of the relegation spots on the last game of the season.

Bad news for all Saints fans, apparently Tottenham Hotspur FC will be making an official approach to Southampton FC for their new Manager
Ronald Koeman,
Daniel Levy was heard in the Spurs Boardroom shouting, swearing and banging his fists down on the table, screaming at the top of his voice;" Ahhhhhh haaaaa, noooooo I want him, why cant I have him, I want a new manager toooooooo booooooo hooooo pleaseeeee"
when his secretary pointed out they He had just taken the old Saint Manager, Levy explained that He'd be gone by Christmas and he was just trying to save time!

off subject, watching the Germany Portugal game yesterday reminded me of a little debate we had on here about whether Fonte should be picked for Portugal instead of Pepe. watching Pepe get sent off I wondered why anyone would pick a player who has a short fuse and is easy to wind over fonte, who had a great season for us.
I think the argument would go that you can't play Bruno Alves and Fonte together very easily as they're both quite slow (well, Bruno Alves is VERY slow, and Fonte is just a bit slow).

Pepe gets picked because he's quick and can cover Bruno Alves.

I don't think the gaffer would drop Bruno Alves because he's like the unofficial leader of the team.

At least that's my understanding of the situation!

That all said, on the basis of their 'first choice pairing' I can't see why Fonte isn't in the squad.

You forgot sell Shaw so we can buy new players as we don't have any money all the money we made last season was spent on wages for players and staff and the general running of the club. Yes we have a billionaire owner but ffp rules means we can no longer make huge loses. Without selling Shaw the club would have about 15million to spend

There are those who have posted their version of the financial state on here and it's far more comprehensive than yours mate. It also showed Saints will have a fairly substantial war chest even before thinking about selling someone off. The fact is we don't know for sure which amongst all those who have been suggested as going will still want to go.
For reasons I've posted a dozen times on here the only one I would want to see the back of is Lallana - he's treated the fans and the club (of which he's the capt) with silent contempt - I for one won't forget it. I would guess there is a fair bit of back peddling to be done by some individuals or their agents before kick off.
