7:09pm

Well what an amazing start to the evening.

Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw make history for Saints as England round off their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Costa Rica.

Gaston Ramirez comes off the bench to deliver the corner that Diego Godin heads in to keep Uruguay in the World Cup and knock out Italy.

With Lallana, Shaw and Dejan Lovren heading home after failing to get out of the group stages, Ramirez joins Morgan Schneiderlin in making it through.

Later tonight we will find out if Maya Yoshida can join them.

That's the end of the blog but keep checking back on dailyecho.co.uk for reports and reaction to all this evening's events

6:59pm

Suarez does look to have bitten Italian defender Chiellini. Amazing end in that game.

Best of all is that as the Italian defender attempts to show the referee the bit mark on his shoulder, Gaston Ramirez is chasing after him trying to cover it up!

6:55pm

Not now. Uruguay are through. Ramirez one of the heroes.

Italy are out

6:54pm

Still playing in the Uruguay game

6:52pm

COSTA RICA 0 ENGLAND 0

6:44pm

Costa Rica are keeping possession and running the clock down here.

They haven't looked hugely over keen all evening

6:43pm

Apparently Suarez has just bitten an Italian player

6:41pm

It was Gaston Ramirez who provided the cross for Uruguay's goal just three minutes after coming on!

6:41pm

Wow. Ramirez might be staying in the World Cup.

Godin has given Uruguay the lead and as it stands they are going to knock Italy out.

What odds on England and Italy being the teams eliminated from this group before the tournament began?

6:40pm

Another good run down the left from Shaw but he can't quite find the cross

6:39pm

Daily Echo:

6:38pm

On 78 minutes Gaston Ramirez gets on the field for Uruguay.

Can he be the hero?

6:37pm

CHANCE (80 MINS)

Rooney tries a cheeky chip from 20 yards out that the keeper tips over

6:34pm

Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney are both introduced from the bench as Roy Hodgson tries to get England a first win of the tournament

6:34pm

Daily Echo:

6:33pm

Uruguay have made another change but still no Gaston Ramirez and still no goal for them against Italy

6:24pm

Adam Lallana did himself no harm but probably was a little subdued due to the fact that has been England's performance today. Here is battling with Bryan Ruiz before he was taken off...

Daily Echo:

6:22pm

CHANCE (62 MINS)

Good interplay between Wilshere and Sturridge but the England man misses the target again

6:22pm

Claudio Marchisio has been sent off for Italy. What a chance for Uruguay to get the win they need. Will we see Gaston Ramirez make his World Cup bow?

6:19pm

Adam Lallana is off on 62 minutes for Raheem Sterling

6:15pm

Lallana goes in the book after a foul on Ruiz

6:07pm

CHANCE (49 MINS)

Shaw's right footed shot is deflected to Sturridge but a heavy first touch allows the keeper to get out to his feet to save

6:06pm

Luke Shaw looking to get forward again down the left. Exciting stuff when he makes those runs and he needs to be fouled to be stopped this time

6:06pm

There has been a half time change for Uruguay as they seek to break the deadlock against Italy but it's not Gaston Ramirez who has come on

6:03pm

The second half is underway

5:46pm

It's not been a classic.

Given that Costa Rica have already qualified and are not playing at full throttle you have to say it's a slight improvement but not blown away

5:45pm

COSTA RICA 0 ENGLAND 0

5:35pm

CHANCE (35 MINS)

Good chance for Daniel Sturridge goes begging.

Ross Barkley with a deep corner, Phil Jones at the far post heads back across goal but Sturridge on the stretch for it heads over

5:33pm

Lallana on the spin gets to the byline and tries to stand up a cross but it's deflected behind for a corner

5:31pm

Milner and Lallana have swapped wings but it hasn't had a positive impact for England

5:27pm

Sturridge goes down in the area but no penalty despite heated appeals from England

5:26pm

You've got to love this picture of Luke Shaw in action...

Daily Echo:

5:25pm

Lallana just about manages to squeeze the ball across the box but it just eludes Wilshere

5:23pm

24 MINUTES

Foster makes a superb save to turn a curling 20 yard free kick from Celso Borges onto the bar

5:22pm

It's not exactly been a classic so far.

Little urgency from Costa Rica who have already qualified. England have looked bright in spells but few chances created thus far

5:18pm

It's still goalless in the game between Uruguay and Italy as well which means as it stands Gaston Ramirez will be exiting the World Cup

5:13pm

Adam Lallana in action for England tonight...

Daily Echo:

5:12pm

CHANCE (12 MINS)

Daniel Sturridge has a crack from 20 yards but it goes wide

5:07pm

Shaw trying to get forward down the left. Nice and positive

5:03pm

First left sided link up between Shaw and Lallana who are left back and left attacking winger in a 4-3-3 but it comes to nothing

5:03pm

CHANCE (2 MINS)

Joel Campbell's shot takes a big defelction and Ben Foster is rooted as it goes just wide.

More stunning work from a FIFA official as they somehow give a goal kick

5:00pm

Good tackle from Adam Lallana after ten seconds. Nice start

5:00pm

The game is underway

4:57pm

Adam Lallana having a good old sing of the national anthem. Luke Shaw seemed rather less certain

4:56pm

The Costa Rica anthem is a very cheery little ditty

4:54pm

The teams are out on the pitch and lining up for the national anthems.

What a moment for Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw

4:49pm

Those who like a little more depth to their teamsheets should take a look at this...

4:44pm

We have been hoping to bring you some photos of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw warming up but our friends at the Press Association have thus far only managed to file one photo of a topless and out of shape male England fan and this! Hopefully they will notice there is a match on soon!

Daily Echo:

4:41pm

Great stat from Saints that puts it all into context...

4:27pm

There have been a lot of good luck messages for Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana. Here's one from their young teammate Harrison Reed

4:26pm

Michael Owen feels England must rediscover the mentality needed to compete at the highest level as Roy Hodgson's men look to learn the lessons from the early exit out of the World Cup.

England take on Costa Rica in their final Group D match on Tuesday evening having seen any hopes of staying in Brazil ended after disappointing defeats to first Italy in Manaus and then Uruguay in Sao Paolo, where Liverpool forward Luis Suarez scored a brace.

The post-mortem into just where England went wrong has already started, from dissecting defensive shortcomings to the claims there are just not enough world-class players to pick from any more.

Owen, who scored a memorable individual World Cup goal against Argentina at France '98 and won 89 caps, believes it is all about focus when pulling on an England shirt.

"It is difficult playing for England, it always has been and always will be, but you need a lot of ability to play at the top level and a certain mentality to go with it, and obviously we are falling a bit short at the moment," said Owen.

"However, you can't just switch it on and off, you almost have to be born with it and have developed it."

4:24pm

TEAMS

England: Foster, Cahill, Shaw, Smalling, Jones, Wilshere, Lampard, Milner, Lallana, Barkley, Sturridge.

Costa Rica: Navas, Gonzalez, Borges, Duarte, Campbell, Ruiz, Brenes, Diaz, Gamboa, Tejeda, Miller.

Ref: Djamel Haimoudi

4:17pm

What an experience this has been for Adam Lallana in Brazil. You can hear his thoughts on it here...

4:13pm

4:12pm

4:11pm

Roy Hodgson turned to youth as he looked to end England's dismal World Cup campaign with at least a tiny bit of hope in Belo Horizonte.

With England already out of the competition after successive defeats, Hodgson decided to make nine changes to his starting XI for the dead rubber against Costa Rica at the Estadio Mineirao.

The England manager stuck with the line-up he named on the eve of that match, which meant Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw were handed their first competitive starts for England.

Shaw, who came in for Leighton Baines, became the youngest player to appear for England at a World Cup since Michael Owen in France '98.

In goal, Ben Foster started his first competitive game for England in five years.
England's back four of Shaw, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and Phil Jones had 50 caps between them.

Frank Lampard was named captain on his 106th, and possibly final, appearance in an England shirt.

Jack Wilshere partnered Barkley in the centre of midfield, with James Milner and Adam Lallana operating on the flanks.

Daniel Sturridge made his third start of the World Cup up front.
It was a youthful side with an average age of 25 years old.

England, who lost their first two matches against Italy and Uruguay, fly home straight after today's game.

4:10pm

The teams are in for Uruguay's must win game against Italy and Gaston Ramirez is again on the bench.

He has been an unused sub in the previous two games as well.

Daily Echo: Picture: Action Images

4:04pm

On the subject of Luke Shaw, the Daily Echo understands that despite Manchester United’s interest in the 18-year-old left back they have not at this time tabled a £34m for the youngster as has been rumoured.

Daily Echo: LUKE SHAW: Has he played his way into World Cup contention?

4:02pm

It will be a busy day for Saints stars at the World Cup.

Gaston Ramirez’s Uruguay will also be in action at the same time as England.

Their fixture against Italy is decisive in terms of deciding who qualifies for the knock out stages from Group D along with Costa Rica.

Later on this evening Maya Yoshida and his Japan teammates take on Colombia looking for a positive result to get through Group C.

4:01pm

Hello and welcome to the Daily Echo’s live coverage of this evening’s World Cup Group D match between England and Costa Rica.

Roy Hodgson’s side may have already been eliminated from the tournament but there is plenty of excitement in Southampton as Saints academy products Luke Shaw and

Adam Lallana will both be starting in Belo Horizonte.

What an amazing opportunity for them to shine on the biggest stage of all and prove they are very much the future of English football.

Good luck Luke, Adam but I feel to little to late. Roy H pick a few young players as if he was going for a new exciting team, then bottled it and as all England managers went to the players who seem to be in the team regardless of league performances .Luke and Adam have been outstanding this season but can only make the last game which means nothing to the fans really. If they are good enough now they should have been good enough to play the first games and drop the like of Welbeck, Rooney, Gerrard.be brave play the players that show desire and passion and fight and pride to play for their country. Don't play the players who think it is their right to play and then tell us they are thinking of retiring from the national team. What gives them to right to retire, Playing for your country is an honour. You are picked on being the best available at that time. saying you may retire is just a cowards way of saying I am not good enough.Let the youngsters play . let the hasbeens step down they have had their go time and time again and messed up every time

Are they overvalued? What does such an expensive bunch of men fail to get a result so consistently? What can be done to force them perform for England as well as they do for their clubs?
