Dani Osvaldo due to return to Southampton as training resumes

Saints’ players report back for their first day under new boss Ronald Koeman with bad boy Dani Osvaldo expected to be amongst them.

The 28-year-old Italian striker left the club at the end of January after a training ground bust up with Jose Fonte that left his teammate with a black eye.

But Osvaldo’s spell at Serie A champions Juventus didn’t end with the Italians taking up their option to sign the striker permanently, meaning he remains a Saints player.

As Osvaldo is a member of the first team squad and has not been involved in World Cup action, having been overlooked by his country, he is due back at Staplewood today.

Koeman officially started work as Saints boss yesterday to prepare for the return of his squad. Osvaldo’s reception will certainly be interesting following the headbutt incident that saw Saints left with little choice but to move him on, with Juventus taking him on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Whether time has proved a healer or not will be interesting to see, as will Koeman’s attitude towards Osvaldo.

There is no doubting his talent, which is why Saints made him their club record signing last summer in a £12.9m deal that has the potential to rise to £14.6m.

However, he often seemed to be on the edge during matches, and his record was hardly startling, with three goals for Saints and a further three for Juventus last season probably being the chief reason he was left out of the Italy squad for Brazil.

Saints will probably have to take a cut in the price they paid for Osvaldo if they are to offload him this summer, or face the prospect of trying to reintegrate him into the dressing room so they can utilise his talents with creative forces like Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert having departed the club and Jay Rodriguez sidelined for several months of the new campaign as he recovers from an ACL reconstruction.

Osvaldo’s situation is just one of many that Koeman has to address, with star players departing, others keen to leave and new signings desperately needed as well as some much needed direction and stability for those that remain.

He will at least have state of the art facilities to work in as the players begin to use elements of the new Staplewood training ground, which has cost £30m to upgrade.

I'm probably in the minority of one, but I'm quite glad he's back, I hope bygones can bygones and Ron can sort out the issues between the rest of the players and him.

It will be like signing a new £15 million pound striker without spending money earned from the sell of players, money that can be spent elsewhere on strengthening the team. I'm not saying don't the likes of Pelle, but he does have the quality we need now Rickie has gone and JRod is out for the foreseeable, regardless of any future signings I would give him until Christmas to see if the damage can repaired, if not let him go in January.

Yeah they're both a bit volatile though I think Osvaldo would come off second best with this Pelle geezer.

This Pelle looks good but he does have a reputation and will collect yellow cards and maybe even reds.

If Osvaldo wants to come back - should we accept him?

If we had him, Pelle, JRod and Gallagher - could be our striker position is taken care of for a few years.

Osvaldo certainly has proved a waste of millions and once a Player attacks a team mate violently it will not be easy to allow him back, let's not forget it was the only signing Potchettino made and he knew his temperament after he had a fracas when playing for Espanyol and assume Potchettino judged that it was a one off a poor judgement IMO.
It seems Southampton could possible cut there losses dramatically to release him and let him go cheap as Osvaldo cannot be trusted but what Manager wants a Player who's has a damaged reputation? Sam at West Ham and Harry have been known to tame these type of Players also if he was allowed back it may be considered a weakness on the Board, IMO the Players that remain who were witness to this nasty act should be allowed to voice there opinion and probably will especially Fonte who was the victim, how they over come these incidents perhaps ex Players could have the answer as there knowledge of experiencing a fracas could of happened in there playing days.
IMO I wouldn't have Osvaldo back, it was nasty unnecessary and maybe the Players could not trust him again which is understandable and as with many people who have a short fuse it's inbuilt in the brain that 99.99% of the time they can be loving caring people then all of a sudden a demon pops out and all the love can fall into dislike and mistrust, Is it an easy decision for the Board and Ronald Koeman? they know it's for the future and reputation of the Club that has to show zero tolerance so it will be very interesting to know the the conclusion and I certainly trust the Board and new Manager 100% because I love SFC

I take your point and I'm a big believer in second chances, but my concern is what impact that would have on morale within the club. I think the squad is already in need of a bit of a lift and the last thing we need is Jose getting the hump as he seems to be one of the most popular figures in the camp.

That said, more or less everyone in the 'real' world has to work with someone they hate, so maybe it's just a matter of everyone being professional and getting over it.

He may just surprise everyone and forge a good partnership with his fellow countryman Pelle if we secure his services.
Training bust ups are common placed throughout football and should be kept out of the media as much as possible.
We've never been told the full story concerning the bust up with Jose and probably never will. Jose could possibly also been at fault and fueled the flare up between them. I don't condone Ossy's actions but have seen and had similar bust ups in my playing days during training sessions. It happens and should be nipped in the bud as quickly as possible.
It's a big gamble but I would personally draw a line under it all and if Ronny can put his arm round him and have a few words he may just turn out to be the player we all thought he would.
The goal he scored against Man City was sheer class so he has got it in him but may need bucket loads of TLC to get the best out of him!!

He's a Saint so we have to back him 100%, lets hope the new Management team get more out of him than the last one and he goes on to fulfill his potential in the team, that goes for Gaston too, sure he can bring more to the team than he has so far, I see exciting times ahead, this Pelle bloke has had a good season under RK and if we can sign Tadic who by all accounts last season was the Leagues best player in that position, Dani & Gaston knuckling down,Ings has been strongly linked to the Club, that'll take pressure of JRod rushing back too early, maybe a holding midfielder coming in for Morgan, Reed taking over that role?, Cresswell coming in at left back from Ipswich, we need two central defenders for sure, Caulker is up for sale and i'm sure RK will have some other players in mind to come in, really excited by all this, the players that have gone or are angling for a move can go as far as I'm concerned, if they're not committed to us, sod off!

I defended him after his antics at Newcastle last year as I thought he was standing up for his team mates. He then produced more of the same BS against one of his team mates which is harder to defend and made my initial judgment look a poor one.

He obviously has temperament issues which will more than likely bubble to the surface again. There don’t seem to be any other takers for him so he has to be re-integrated. The players said that he was a likeable fella last season until it all went a bit Pete Tong.

I agree too. But let's not forget strikers need to score goals that's why they are in the team.

Totally agree with those who say that, given that we need strikers and no one appears willing to take him off our hands, we might as well give him a last chance (in fact we have little choice).

However we need to note the usual journalistic license here - all based on the assumption he must be reporting back for training because we've not heard anything to the contrary. May be true - may not be.

did he finish the suspension the club gave him or did we get rid before it ended? if he didn't finish it then put him back on suspension whilst we get rid!
I agree he`s a good player, maybe Italy should have taken him to brazil (couldn't have done any worse), but he couldn't even be bothered to try here first time round so why would he now?
he didn't just have a `bust up` with a teammate, they happen all the time and are soon sorted, he assaulted another player to such an extent that the club thought the only option for them was to suspend him and then ship him out! clubs don't do that to their most expensive player unless theres little other choice!
don forget he also had an prem ban for the touchline brawl at Newcastle. I would fully welcome him back if he had at least tried last season but his actions showed that he didn't want to be here, even though he was MP`s man. MP had to phone him to convince him to come here and with MP gone how is he going to feel about coming back?

on a different note, it looks like Osprey has picked up another little stalker friend. its a shame that someone feels their only input into different threads is to belittle another poster, a poster who may not be everyone`s cup of tea but is basically harmless and tries to inject a bit of comedy and humour into this site. why cant people like this give us their input into the stories? new login name and the only posts are having a dig at osprey, makes me think that someone has created another login so they can have a pop because osprey is a regular happy clapper!

Meanwhile another player who cost us a record fee of around £15m, did not really want to sign, disrupted the side, gave very lacklustre performances, attacked the Newcastle coach, stated on many occasions that he wanted to go back to Serie A, savagely attacked a team mate etc...etc..
This player is treated like the homecoming hero??

Shaw only provided one assist and no goals. Nat Clyne 4 assists and 1goal. Pound for pound Clyne is much better. Think we have done very well by cashing in on the hype surrounding LS. Nice to take a lot of money out of Manure's pocket as well.

We spent loads of money on him, it seems we can't get that back so the options are limited.

- Drop him and just pay him until his conrtact is over. Not the brightest idea.
- Sell him at a massive loss. I have some sympathy with this idea but it riles me.
- Start using him again. He has quality but wants to be the star not the team worker. Not sure that will fit with Koeman's approach. But with JRod injured we need to use the best strikers we have and at the moment he fits the bill.

Third option seems most likely. and if we do buy another Italian they might make a good partnetship.. who knows?

But at the end of the day, I don't know whats's going on .. What's happening?

I agree that RonKo should seek the views of the other senior players about Osvaldo then he needs to speak with Dani and make a decision asap. You can never say never in football, remember Jason Puncheon returned.

If Dani makes peace & stays it would save buying a second striker while we wait for Jay to get fit and then decide in January. If not we don't want to just send him out on loan again so need to use him as a part exchange for a player we do want, which might be easier than just selling him.

However we do need to buy at least one Striker.
Pelle does appear a good replacement for Ricky, and I would take Bendtner on a free as if we can get the best from him he could be sold for good price next season, remember we turned Peter Crouch's career around.

Gaz, agreewith most of what you say but this idea that laloadsamoneylana has turned down move after move is just not right. a simple google search will show you what we as saints fans seem to have forgotten, Laloadsamoneylana has asked to leave on at least one if not two different occasions. he asked to leave when Jan Poortvliet was manager, he wanted out when surman was being linked away.
from bbc 606;
"Family member of Surman has been telling people that Andrew Surman and Adam Lallana will definately be leaving Saints either in January or May. Both are fed up with the poor coaching by Jan Poortvliet. They are also confused with the role of Rupert Lowe whose interference in team affairs is causing a lot of hassle around the training ground. Backroom staff who have been at Saints for a number of years are amazed how a chairman wants to get involved when he hasnt got a clue with what he comes out with."

heres another from sky sports that I posted before;

Southampton manager Mark Wotte is determined not to let forward Adam Lallana leave on the cheap.

Wolves have already had a £500,000 bid for the 21-year-old rejected with the Saints looking for a considerably higher offer.

The youngster was linked with a move to Tottenham in the early stages of last season but in the end mustered just two goals in all competitions as the South Coast club were relegated from the Championship.

Lallana has refused to play in the club's two pre-season games to date after telling Wotte he wants to leave.

"There is some interest for him and he would like to join a club in the Championship or Premier League," Wotte told the Daily Star.

so the urban myth that he has been a `loyal servant` and has turned down move after move is just wrong. the only difference this time is that he has become very well known and can command a huge fee.
when you look back over the years and see how he has treated the club that put him on the map and stood behind him when he had health problems, its no surprise that he has tried to force a move again, looks like he has been successful this time though.

I think Osvaldo engineered a move away from St. Mary's. The last manager whatsname couldn't handle players like Osvaldo and Ramirez and kept telling us that they were not playing because they were still adapting to the EPL.

Osvaldo is an enigma.
I just don't know what Osvaldo we are going to get back. No one does.
He was a flop at Juventus and that could work in our favour as he has a lot to prove. We are never going to get our money back on him but he could win over the Saints fans by showing everyone that he is still a top class striker and putting in a good performance week in and week out. If only he realised what an opportunity he has to become an idol at Southampton.

The fact is Osvaldo is a Saints player and could be a good player and unless someone comes in to buy him cut price or not, we are stuck with him. Therefore he needs to earn his salary on the pitch for us, then come January he may be more sellable if we still want rid. You never know maybe a leopard can change it spots especially with a new man at the helm.

Meanwhile another player who cost us a record fee of around £15m, did not really want to sign, disrupted the side, gave very lacklustre performances, attacked the Newcastle coach, stated on many occasions that he wanted to go back to Serie A, savagely attacked a team mate etc...etc..

Sometimes, I just don't understand some of you.
I think you'll find that circumstances dictate how people feel and, frankly, having been left high and dry by our England contingent, yes, I can understand why we have to pin our hopes on what we have left.

Sure, I think everyone fully understands that it is likely we'll have to replace Osvaldo rather than count on him, but when you are left short up front and you have a guy with clear talent on your books you just have to hope that he'll see sense and channel his aggression in the right way eventually.

Personally I doubt it will happen, but we need someone to step up and maybe now he's the big man at Saints it will be Danni.

Clearly if Adam and Rickie were here they'd be adored as they always have been adored, but you can't blame people for being slightly annoyed with the players queuing for the exit, so much so that they couldn't give us the respect of waiting until after the World Cup.

I don't think anyone begrudges Rickie his move, although there is a danger he may be turning the end of his career into a sightseeing trip (hopefully not), but I'm not in the mood to be waxing lyrical about Adam or Luke at the moment, though I thank them for their previous service and the money they've brought to the club, just not the manner with which they left.

Not that complicated mate.

One was the captain of this club - he had responsibilities beyond the average team player. If on the last day of the season he had just said I won't be here next season he might had held some of the respect our captain should be due. He said nothing the whole while plotting and feathering his own nest. Alongside him at that time was a young 18 precocious talent who he should have had his arm around counteracting all the propaganda coming from elsewhere.
These young men get a sniff that the club capt is going to renege on a newly signed contract thereby saying stuff you - what do they think?

The other one at least had the honesty to say he wasn't happy. I haven't noticed anyone welcoming him like a homecoming hero.
Most are just wondering if he deserves, wants or is capable of accepting another chance - if offered by the new management.
Little doubt in my mind that if he stuck to football and applied himself to his contract he could still offer something to a club which is currently struggling - can he do that, I doubt it but we'll never know unless the olive branch is offered.

Someone posted on here what could be a great half way house compromise - Play him till Xmas and if he doesn't do his pro best to resurrect his career then it really is the point of no return and we dump him.

Being areasonable bloke that sounds like a reasonable tack - others can agree or disagree - their prerogative.

Gaz, agreewith most of what you say but this idea that laloadsamoneylana has turned down move after move is just not right. a simple google search will show you what we as saints fans seem to have forgotten, Laloadsamoneylana has asked to leave on at least one if not two different occasions. he asked to leave when Jan Poortvliet was manager, he wanted out when surman was being linked away.
from bbc 606;
Backroom staff who have been at Saints for a number of years are amazed how a chairman wants to get involved when he hasnt got a clue with what he comes out with."

heres another from sky sports that I posted before;

That's the weird thing though - if he'd have wanted to leave at either of those times and we'd only got £500k for him I think the fans would have understood and wished him well.

Things are different now. I think fans are particularly annoyed that these guys want out when we are in an extremely promising and exciting position, with further players coming through and bags of potential to possibly go one better.

With this in mind it annoys me that they felt happy to jump ship so quickly, even if they felt the club had lost direction at the very top.

Having got this far and profited from staying on board while the likes of Surman and Jones (and probably some others at big clubs) drifted along with so-so bit part careers, it's a shame he chose this moment to leave.

To use a very poor example - if your wife left you when you were on the street, drunk, bankrupt and with no direction you would probably understand, but if she stuck with you until you became rich and then she fecked off the first rich guy who showed an interest you'd be slightly naffed off.

Dani clearly has a massive ego, now Rickie has gone he should be told just how wonderful he is, be made to feel like the number one striker at the club (even if he isn't) and hopefully we'll see a different to the petulant little boy we had last term , bring in other strikers (such as Pelle) but keep this boy, a bit ego massaging goes a long way.

I think Jose Fonte is professional enough to realise players of Dani's ilk keep teams challenging for things (Balliotelli) and maybe he'll put the past down to a bad day in the office.

no one has ever officially put in a bid for AL in the past.
When the club went into admin nobody came for him so he was not sold. Its all stories that he has been a loyal servant. Saints made him who he is today and he jumped at the first chance to leave. Not what a captain does.
He could have stayed this year to stabilise the club and left next year.

From my hot air ballon just over Hythe I see a bearded chap or lady in a
top of the range drop head sports car entering a nearby sporting venue.
Although steaming up, my telescope, **** these army surplus goggles, can just make out a transfer request, not in English and a foreign registration not in English, also a newspaper not in English and the Beano. Sammy Lee is riding a tricycle around the car park as his name has not yet dried out on his parking space of which many remain empty. Boxing ring being assembled next to changing room. Sammy just being helped out of a pot-hole. A puncture I think and loose bell. Unfortunately wind now changing towards the East so must land on Common to avoid blowing over Stoneham area and spying queue of anonymous Wannabees training for once famous Hampshire club. How they miss you Jimmy Now for a soft landing by the Paddling Pool and a swift half before another Messi show. More soon.....

OK,-the urine having been well and truly extracted, I try to stop laughing long enough to welcome the sage OSPREY back and to warn him some young gun has been attempting to track him down.

Thanks for informative reply - just not sure what it is informing me of and it's usefulness in ascertaining whether the Italian head butting champ is back in town or not remains doubtful but thanks anyway.
When Sammy was on the tricycle could his feet reach the ground? At this point almost as pressing a question as whether Dani (bobbing and weaving and looking confident) Osvaldo is back on the wild streets of Soton.

Osvaldo reported sick and missed training, even worse excuse came from Artur for not being there, apparently he got hitched, if the story is to be believed, in Mykonos yesterday, that is a feeble reason to miss training imo.

I think we should give Osvaldo another chance. Besides that he might turn it on next season as he needs to rebuild his reputation. We have nothing to lose and it provides us with another striker as we will need cover as we won't see Jay Rod back until well into the season. You never know Pele and him might strike up a good partnership.
