Saints have confirmed the appointments of Sammy Lee and Dave Watson to the club’s coaching staff.

Watson has worked extensively with the England squad and has been praised for helping the likes of Joe Hart, Ben Foster and Jack Butland.

The 40-year-old joins as senior goalkeeping coach.

Lee, meanwhile, joins Ronald Koeman’s backroom team as first team assistant coach.

Martin Hunter has been appointed as technical director after four years in charge of Saints’ development squad.

Executive director Les Reed told the club’s official website: “I am extremely happy that we have been able to appoint three highly-respected and talented coaches to these important positions.”

Couldn't have asked for a better goalkeeping appointment for what my opinions worth. This guy is very highly regarded in Goalkeeping circles , if we could get someone like Jack Butland in then this could solve that department for years to come, also like the look of Alex Smithies at Huddersfield.

On another note and just to step away from incoming transfers, does anyone else not agree that potentially the biggest deals we need to get done now are to tie Jack Cork and Jose Fonte down on long term contracts given that they're out of contract next season?

We now have a 'technical director'? That sounds like kind of a big deal. It would be nice to hear someone explain what exactly this involves and where they sit in the hierarchy. It's a whole lot of chiefs and not many Indians...

Cork yes, Fonte no... I think Jack is vital, Jose is probably at the limit of his capabilities

If Martin Hunter has been promoted is a new U21s Coach coming in as well as U18s? This is a great opportunity for Saints to bring in top notch coaches from Europe who will have a real impact on the Academy players so they are ready for the first team. Saints also want coaches with potential to step up into the first team.

This is just a thought but all these new 'backroom' staff appear to me to be Les Reed inspired signings. Would the new manager really know anything about Lee or Watson? So the question really is do we have any reason to trust Reed's judgement? His few excursions into the real world of football certainly didn't set the world on fire. Seems like he's gathering a lot of old boy ex-England mates around him. I think we have recent evidence of how good these 'officials' are at the England set-up!
Manager's these days take their own backroom people with them, these people know what the manager wants, what his style and what his methods are and translate that on the training ground.

On Sky Sport. Looks like Big Ron has used his connections in Holland and made his first signing. Dusan Tadic has agreed terms. Lots of big clubs were after him and no wonder, he is class. Cheers Ron.

Footnote.

Sevilla FC are not happy we have signed Dusan Tadic. They thought he was a dead cert for them..

Their Forum ( The translation is hilarious) has 51 pages about Tadic and how fantastic a player he is and how they are looking forward to signing him.

Then on the last few pages it all goes pear shape and they discuss how "Souptantom have pastry to burst" and how "Shoupsanton are Firecracker fat about this player" Mind you, it still makes more sense than some of the Sh@te on the Daily Echo.
