Saints set to play their part in record spending spree

Daily Echo: Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman

Saints are set to begin their contribution to potentially the biggest summer of spending in Premier League history.

With clubs reaping the benefits of a huge new television deal, there have already been a number of big-money moves in the past few weeks.

Last summer’s transfer window saw clubs in England’s top-flight spend an estimated £630m, and they are already well on the way to recording another enormous figure.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have splashed almost £150m between them on just seven players!

Saints, whose coffers have been swelled by the sales of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, will soon add to the expenditure.

The club are close to signing striker Graziano Pelle, having raised their offer for the player this week to around £6.4m (€8m), and a deal is hoped to be completed within the next few days.

They are also hopeful of signing FC Twente midfielder Dusan Tadic, which would cost them about another £9m.

Both would be in the top five or six record signings made in the club’s history.

With new manager Ronald Koeman having been guaranteed that all funds generated from player sales will be reinvested in the squad, there are likely to be a number of other incomings as well.

Saints were estimated to have spent a club-record £36m last summer, and about £33m the year before that, and it is possible those figures could be eclipsed again by the end of August.

Chelsea and Manchester United have led the way in the top flight so far, with the Blues paying £32m for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa and £27m for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, while United have spent around £27m on Saints defender Shaw and £28.8m on Atletico midfielder Ander Herrera.

Those four deals together are worth around £115m.

Liverpool have also made a splash, spending around £23m on Saints captain Lallana, £4m on his teammate Rickie Lambert and about £10m on Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can.

The overall total will perhaps be impacted by Manchester City’s spending being restricted to a net £49m, as a result of Financial Fair Play sanctions.

But they have already spent £12m on Porto midfielder Fernando.

With another two months to go before business closes until January, spending is likely to soar, and with Saints looking to strengthen in plenty of areas this summer, they are likely to play a big part in it.

It will be good to get some good news out of saints with some good signings these two is a good start but we do need a good keeper and a CB now that Loven is looking to move out? What else do we in the way of players, and we need to act fast before all the good players are gone.

But what we gave to do and to keep in mind is that some of these players will use us as a stepping stone to get into what they see as a big club.

Excellent, skilled and talented new players yes please! But... the Club needs new dynamic leadership at the top. Kueger and Reed have been slow to react to changing circumstances. The Board looks unwieldy. The autocratic, lean, dynamism of Cortesse is missed. Last minute player deals to placate the fans will not necessarily achieve a good season. I fear the worse I'm afraid.

Assuming Koeman will utilise Academy whenever possible we need 2 good-quality finished articles in each of the main areas - in many cases to replace the good-quality players we have or are on the point of losing.

English would be nice but as we've seen from the World Cup even the cream of the crop are nowhere near as good as their inflated wages and egos would lead everyone to believe.

Main lesson from the WC so far? Good teams who work for each other will always beat a collection of gifted individuals who think they can do it all alone, hence the success of teams comprised of PL rejects and nobodies.

(Second main lesson? Achieving this is one of the basic requirements of a good manager, an area in which Hodgson failed spectacularly. But whereas coaches of other failed teams have all fallen on their swords we pat him on the back and say carry on. Says it all really).

Therefore I'm not particularly worried about getting in marque signings at inflated prices and wages so as to make statements of intent blah blah blah. Far better to just get good, honest players that our youngsters can learn from and who together can once again be welded into a formidable unit.

That I think will Koeman and the board's approach and I for one will be more than happy with that (although if we suddenly had the opportunity to sign Messi on a free I wouldn't complain!)

As a season ticket holder who watched a delightful side last season and the season before, I cannot help being disappointed by the prospects for the new season. As a supporter of some 50 odd years, I can,t remember a worst close season for players moving out. I have the feeling that after last season many of our players think that they are too good to play for SFC. I hope that some of them fall flat on their faces, when they realise that the grass is not always greener. As for replacing those leaving, we cannot build a team in 6 weeks no matter who the manager is. I feel we will end up with a load of token buys, that nobody else wants if we do not move quickly in the transfer market.

I sense that you regret my negativity. Unfortunately, the owner of our club, like other owners, aren't really bothered by supporters, unless they publicly complain and don't attend matches. You are deluding yourself if you think that the owner and chairman have any loyalty to SFC outside the financial value of the club. With obliging and gullible supporters no wonder the owner thinks she can asset strip, appoint low-standard senior executives and staff, and get away with it. More people need to stand up and complain now! because come December when we are near the bottom of he league it will already be too late. I suggest that all supporters put down a marker now before its too late.

I love this comment from Jack Cork.
“When you have someone who is less experienced and hasn’t done so much, he can say stuff and you don’t really want to believe it but I know when he (Koeman) is going to say stuff to help us and give us advice that it’s going to be stuff that is going to mean a lot. It can help improve us because it’s come from such an experienced man who’s won so much in the game.”

Could he be having a pop at a previous manager, who apparently put all his energies into supporting a select few?

It is looking more likely that Lovren will be leaving, hope not to a Premiership club. So that will be 4 of our best players gone and need to be replaced urgently just to get us back to last seasons level. However we all know that we needed at least 4 top quality additions to last seasons squad so that means we need to sign at least 8 players, & even more if we allow any more like Morgan to leave.

It is unrealistic to believe that we can buy 8 or more top quality players and then expect them all to make in the premiership. Also 8 players at an average of £9m each is £70m, a some that the board will not allow RonKo to spend.
Therefore we ALL have to accept that we will NOT be moving forward next season despite what the board say.

I totally agree,. I have been a supporter for 57 years and I cannot understand why fellow loyal supporters have not expressed their dismay. The executive chairman should have predicted this. Why shouldn't the players move on when the "journey" has come to an end, we do not know where we are, and no one has told us where we are going in the future. You cannot blame them. And if anyone disagrees, please tell me what the realistic objectives are for next season. I, for one, am unaware of our targets, apart from financial ones. The latter I have already assisted with achieving with a debit from my bank account.

Start off by raiding the Championship and buy some English players like Will Hughes of Derby.

Also keep some money for the January transfer window when we will be above Spuds, playing in red and white stripes, one hand on the FA cup and pushing for a top 6 finish.

Lest we forget, these are the teams we have to beat to finish in the same spot as last season.

Stoke City
Newcastle United
Crystal Palace
Swansea City
West Ham United
Sunderland
Aston Villa
Hull City
West Bromwich Albion
Leicester City
Burnley
QPR
Be realistic we play most of these teams in the first 12 games having been given a relatively easy start to the fixture list.
We have to sign at least 3 or 4 top quality players to replace the 3 or 4 want-aways and still need the 4 top quality players we all know that we needed to add to last seasons squad in order to push us on, and that is assuming we don't loose any others.

Even if we did spend the £70+m needed for these 8 players (which the board will not do) then you have to expect that some of the 8 will not settle in the premiership.

Therefore it will take us at least 2 season to us back to the top eight again, and hopefully not find players being sold again.

It took 4 years to build the team up and 4 weeks to break it up so we all have to accept that it will take at least two seasons to get back to where we were and a third to push on.

POSITIVES :

Gotta SUPPORT KATERINA LIEBHERR - She is sanctioning LARGE NUMBERS OF MILLIONS - possibly 100 MILLION to bolster our Squad and keep SFC in the TOP SECTION OF THE LEAGUE.

STABILITY IN THE NEXT DECADE and beyond is essential.

GET FULLY SUPPORTIVE OF KING RON KOEMAN - SFC sanctioned gettting in a TOP EUROPEAN MANGER

WE CAN be like Everton - Newcastle - Spuds etc AND PUSH FOR A EUROPEAN PLACE with the Players - like the Everton Players playing their hearts out to get a Champions League Spot. IF our Squad had been more ROBUST last season with TOP STRIKER and also ADDITIONAL NUMBER 1 KEEPER we would have pushed manure and spuds and everton all the way.

NEGATIVES :

F*CKING WANTAWAY PLAYERS
HALL OF SHAME - lambert shaw and lala

Dani and Lovren - GET THEM INTO LINE.

Forget all about Dani - He will never perform in a Saints shirt again. All he is to us is X million from a seria A club.

Lovren - There's a chance he may still feature with us but all the gossip tells us the situation is not good with him. Suggest we forget about him too and if Rambo manages to talk him round then we look upon him as another good summer signing because it will take an increased contract to keep the little mercenary smiling.

As a season ticket holder who watched a delightful side last season and the season before, I cannot help being disappointed by the prospects for the new season. I would like the club to go forward rather than backwards. So I my postings are negative, and I make no apology for that. My only regret is that I renewed my season ticket before we lost a talented manager and some good players. I would have thought that anyone could understand my point of view.
I don't think they've been delivered yet, so you probably still have a good chance to cancel it and have no more regrets. I'm sure that will you cheer up a bit.
Alternatively, you could wait and see how the new board does as they may just surprise you.
I agree with the comment that the majority of owners are not in the game because of their love of football, it is essentially a business for them. However, I am not so sure they wish to asset strip given that, regardless of who the chairman is, it is our owner that would have had to sanction the building of our state of the art training facilities as well as putting the money up BEFORE player sales for signings, a reported £30m.
I see no point in jumping on the "we are going to have a dire season" bus until we actually see how we start the season. Lets not forget, no-one saw us doing as well as we did last season and, to be honest, we overachieved. If we can become a consistent top 10-12 team to consolidate our position we can then kick on from there. Lets not forget Everton have got to where they are by doing this with no "superstars" or marquee signings, why can we not do the same.
The one thing you can guarantee is the future will always be interesting when it comes to our beloved club!

Well I did say it with a bit of tongue in cheek. Still.

All the teams that finished below us are re building as well. Have a read around some of the other clubs fan sites and forums. Most of those fans think Liverpooooooh and Manure are mugs for paying over the odds for Lallana and Shaw. There is only Lovren and Schneiderlin to sort out. If they go it will be for £20m and £15m. Of course it will take time for Saints to play the Koeman way but every team below us is in the same boat. I would rather be in our shoes with money to spend than having a player like Lallana who's hair stands up on end just dreaming about playing in a Liverpooooh shirt.

Why is it people do not believe our manager will be allowed to spend the money that has been suggested will be given to him? It has come from player sales at the end of the day, something you cannot budget for!
Further, the owners wants a successful club as, in a business sense, it is needed for them to make money, the less successful the less money that comes in. Then, if they end up wanting to sell it, they get less for it because of the lack of success!
Also, just because we are fans of the club, we do not have the right to know all of the goings on within the club, "public statement this" "fans ought to know that". No-one was saying that when Cortese was in charge with his media black out so why should that change now?

To put that into a little perspective, a centre forward that played for Malmö, (along with AIK and Helsingborg the top 3) left to play for Bournemouth when they were in league 1.
There are about three decent players in the Allsvenskan, I have to say Anders Svensson, Molins and I don't feel comfortable putting another name down!

Ron has been in the job 3 days.

Are people really expecting £70m worth of players to be announced this afternoon ??

I think it will go like this-
1. Players return to pre-season and do VO2-MAX test
2. Our new conditioning coach, sports and science dept and solent uni analyse all player data
3. Ron compiles list for who we don't need, who we get in as cover, and who we want as replacements for the departed
4. Monday morning Ron gives list to Les and says "...here it is, you do the business side and leave me to do the football side...."

Not expecting anything solid until mid-week at the earliest

Our board have been incredibly slow in heading off the problems of this summer. I cannot believe they couldn't forecast it April. Most of the supporters around me in the Itchen stand did.
